My favorite airfix memory was building my first model plane, I randomly decided one day to pick up an airfix bf109 starter kit. I had a blast building and hand painting it with a brush, simpler times. Looking back it was very rough and not my best work, but that’s not what matters. I had a great time and it helped me grow in the hobby, and enjoy modeling more. I still have it on my shelf, and I will never get rid of it or repaint it. A reminder of how far I have come.

My Airfix Memeory is not really happy but taught me lots, I was in junior school, I saved up for a “huge kit” an Airfix 1/72 Handley Page, bought said model, took home and rushed to make it, made the biggest mess of the wings, trying to align all the struts, oh my, hounest I cried, anyway lesson learn't that I had lots to learn ( 70's hence books at Library), I planned the build sequence of future models, learnt the plans wearn't always perfect in those days, well thanks for the channel, regards 😃

"Airfix memory". I remember the first time I bought an Airfix kit. I was around 11 years old and back then the only kits that got to the few distributors in my country were old Revell kits, so when I saw that Airfix 72nd Gladiator it was like a dream come true. For me Airfix represented top quality models, I had only seen them on the internet. I was so scared to build it that I left it on the shelf for many years and only in 2022 I was brave enough to give it a go. It's one of my favorite models I've built.

My first Airfix encounter was in a large discount store in Minneapolis ca. 1957 at age 8. Upon entering the store I immediately went in search of the toy section, yep that's where the models were. I was shocked when I saw the Airfix kit display. There were maybe five columns by 10 rows of 1/72 models! At that time the kits came in a plastic bag with a cardboard hanger stapled to the top. The interesting thing I remember was the price: 29 cents each!! I know I bought three of them because I had a whole dollar to spend. Ah yes those were the days.

Great build video! My favorite Airfix memory is when I built the 1/72 Airfix A6M2b Zero kit. It was an enjoyable build and the first kit I built after being out of the hobby for decades. I decided to enter my first contest with it. It was the IPMS Nationals and I was completely amazed when it won 3rd place in the out-of-box category.

My airfix memory, aged 4 dad buys a 72 scale spitfire I put it together with tube glue + lots of finger prints then put the transfers on followed by a very light gloss green, for a 4 year old I remember it being a master piece😂.

My Airfix memory is being my first plastic model bought ever! The well known bagged Messerschmitt Me Bf 109G-6 in 1/72 scale. I bought the kit myself and was allowed by my father (as I was 15 then) to also by some jars of paint on his account. We raced home so I could start building. Many Aircraft kits followed, I am 70 know!! Still building though

I just had my first Airfix Memory recently! Built a 1/72 P40. Went together well, and I love that they give wheels up options. Easy enough to reuse the hole they'd have you drill out for their stand with an acrylic rod instead.

I really like when you bring variety to your channel and do different subjects not just armor. I am looking forward to how you tackle the painting of this kit. As for an Airfix memory I remember when I was a kid living in Germany in the 60's and I went to my friend's house and his brother was building an Airfix kit and painting it with Humbrol paints out of the tins. I always thought how great a modeler he was and the impression it left on me.

I have similar memories of my old school friends and being so in awe of their model. An old Red Arrows plane is always front of mind. It was probably a shocker but I recall it being amazing. Nice work so far, mate. Just a couple of tips: rather than scraping or sanding paint off mating surfaces, just use a cotton bud dampened with a suitable thinner. This eliminates any potential risk of subtly changing or damaging the mating surfaces themselves. Secondly, for canopies and clear parts, try using an acrylic glue like that available from AMMO, which although it does dry fairly slowly, generally gives a much stronger bond than plain old PVA. And lastly, when rescribing lost panel lines across fuselage joins, you might find a photo-etched razor saw simplifies the job, and often eliminates the need for guide tape. Model on!

Hi Clayton for attaching clear parts i use mig ultra glue, its a water based acrylic adhesive that you can also use for photoetch and it dries clear 👍

Hi Richard. Thanks for the feedback. I haven’t used it myself but my understanding is it’s a pva style of glue which is generally speaking very weak and slow drying. I needed the super glue strength and speed to counter some of the fit issues. I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for it to give it a try though. Appreciate you taking the time to comment 🕺🏽

Nice work Clayton, my very first kit was an Airfix Spitfire, and let's just say it got me hooked, I'm almost 60yrs old and have been in this hobby since the age of Seven, I also consider myself an all-round modeller, having built cars, bikes, aircraft, ships, some Sci-Fi, and of course Tanks, can't say I'm a big fan of Airfix, but wouldn't mind a 1/24th scale Spitfire.

It´s is difficult to pick a favorite Airfix memory. Wide selection of cheap kits, mixed quality of those early kits, but I had a lot of those on my shelf. One really cool memory was when a few years ago James May built a 1:1 Airfix Spitfire on a tv show, and tried to get modern day kids to build plastic models.

Grew up in Canada so don't have Airfix memory. Revell and Monogram were my earliest kits. I have built recent Airfix aircraft kits and have more in the stash. Different genres appeal to me, like Star Wars, gundams, F1 cars, WW1 armoured cars, military cannons and have built some with more in the stash. Oh and that Tatoo from Fantasy Island - a blast from my childhood past.

Hi Clayton! This was a very good build video mate. I am not an aircraft modeller, although I loved the Airfix kits as a kid (a long,long time ago), but you have highlighted the complexity of some aircraft model kits, and what to be aware of. The same can be said for some armour kits, depending on the manufacturer, and noted that care and forethought is required when putting any kit together. When I look at some of the aircraft models on the competition table at some of the shows shown on Y/T, I am amazed at the detail that the modeller has put into his project. Way above my abilities, and something to really admire. Armour on the other hand does not seem to demand the same level of skill, in that we weather the model in a completely different way, and sometimes (in my case almost every model) we may be able to disguise our mistakes. Can’t wait to see the Me410 finished. Cheers for now mate!

hmm.. Ill have to disagree with you there Gary. I think armour does require the same 'level' of skill to execute well, but I would suggest it is a different set of skills that are required in each of the genres. I've seen high level aircraft modellers butcher armour, and vice versa. It all comes back to that muscle memory and being familiar with the tricks and hacks around the discipline. Do agree with you though that your errors can tend to be far more exposed with the winged thingies... Thanks for sharing your thoughts as always - C

I did not mean armour modellers ‘drop their game’ a little when building a kit, or that building say, a Dragon kit with 500 plus parts, does not require the same skills as an aircraft kit with all it’s detail (how those guys don’t go crazy applying the myriad of decals that modern aircraft have, is beyond me), I merely meant that an average modeller like myself can sometimes recover from errors with, say, an application of some heavy weathering. I am not saying that we should accept that as OK, but In my opinion, that is something you can’t do with aircraft if you make an error. After all that, I think I will keep my feet (and tracks and wheels) on the ground, keep trying to improve my skills, and hopefully become confident enough to try all genres of our hobby. Gosh my Airfix memory is when I was 10 years old and buying those bagged kits .. built them Saturday and then shoot them up with my pellet gun on Sunday.. Nowadays I mostly stick to armour but do have a few aircraft kits in the stash .. Oh yeah I did build a Finemolds 1/72 Tie Fighter this year .. that was really out of my comfort zone .

As Fate would have it, working on an Airfix Memory build right now, Henschel HS-123. Picked it up for the princely sum of 10USD after determining the Avis kit I had attempted was a dog not worth its keep. I find the new Airfix kits hit and miss as to molding quality and engineering, so really appreciate a fellow modeler recording his tests and trials with one of their latest. Cheers & stay well.

@@workbenchhobbies4316 It's almost as old as I am, a child of the sixties (when I first built it). A plethora of fine rivets on the fuselage and the usual hills & valleys on the wings. Dodgy fit, but with some modeling skills and a proper pint it can be made to look the part. Tried using alcohol instead of distilled water with the Perfect Putty and I feel the results are better, so another thank you.

Airfix memory, for me its the DHC Beaver. I don't really know why, it certainly wasn't my first kit but it was one of the earliest & since getting back into the hobby, it was the first one i looked out for and bought (well i bought 2 actually). I know its not the most accurate with all its rivets but i like it especially the AAC version.

My favorite airfix memory ... My ONLY airfix memory was a few months ago when i built their Bolton Paul Defiant. First ever kit from them. Very nice kit. . but i think there are 2 types of modelers. Guys that do air craft and guys who do armor. I love building aircraft kits. I'm just not great at it. Haha. You also have the rare modeler that is great at both.

Quinta studio 3D decals are fantastic. I use them for 1/35 trucks. It's certainly not cheating. It's just an aid to produce a very realistic model, and of course, they are optional 😂

So many Airfix memory. Just one. Building the F-84F when it was new, and being so impressed with the cockpit compared with the usual seat-on-pegs arrangements. General comment: I still really like modern Airfix, but they could try harder with fit of things like inserts and canopies. They just need a little more work than a modern, CAD-designed, kit should need. A thought on Perfect Plastic Putty. Yes it's the absolute duck's wotnots for gaps that are not quite perfect but not requiring a more serious filler. I find a swipe with a slightly dampened cotton bud immediately after application does the job.

My Airfix memory would be Dad bringing home those Airfix kits that came in bags, and a tube of Testor's glue (The stuff that made you feel a bit funny when using it) The poor aircraft would somehow get glued together with a fogged up canopy and glue fingerprints all over it.

Uufff I understand you in the clear parts! I built the Stuka dive bomber for my brother (the ravell one not the airfix memory one) and when applying the glue to the cockpit I accidentally placed some glue on my thumb so when my hand grabbed the piece, it got stuck to my thumb and when I was able to remove it, it left a big nasty thumb print there. Not just that, on my car models when I apply the glue to the frame and want to place the clear windshield, it’s a nasty mess as the glue has to be on parts of the clear piece and the frame (so far in the car models that I’ve build) are rarely made to actually fit on the clear piece as if there made from a different manufacture. Even on my tamiya jeep, I found that the frame also didn’t for some reason fit perfectly to reduce this issue. But alas it’s always a issue and it’s definitely a learning curve

Airfix Memory huh... The "Starcruiser 1", Dad brough it back from a business trip to the UK. I built it and played with it for years. It eventually ended up in the scrap bin. I'm certain parts of it went on to live as greeblies in some scratchbuilt Star Wars models

I totally agree regarding Quinta Studios & others that make 3d decals, not cheating at all. Just another sign of progress in the quality of detail products being offered to modellers. My Airfix Memory has to be the Wellington Bomber. I was about 8 years old, and when I brush painted the underside with black enamel paint I got ti everywhere. All over my bedroom desk and carpet. Nice build, enjoyed that. In answer to your question, are 3D printed decals cheating? Certainly not. Anything that helps you get a better result isnt cheating. Cheating is when you break the rules in order to gain an unfair advantage. Is it unfair on those that perhaps dont have as much disposable income as you? Thats another question.

Airfix memory, I bought an Airfix 1/72 Panavia Tornado, everything was going fine until I went to put the intakes on, they looked like they had melted and bowed out. The tornado promptly got disposed of. For some reason I keep buying Airfix kits in spite of this 🤔
