What are some other classic exercises you’d like my take on? Any other (polite) feedback?

Definitely the massive Arban Book! There's so much there that it's overwhelming and I don't know where to start.

There’s certainly a lot to cover in the Arban. Thinking cap on!

@@AirflowMusicNYC What about Clarke's "setting up drills" book?

I’m not familiar with that one. I’ll have to get a copy.

Thoose are very good pointer to think of when practising this exercise. I have a bad habit of practising mindlessly, so would like to hear more pointers on what to focus while practising other books like Shlossberg, Stamp, Cichowicz🤗

This was one of the main technical exercises I remember from my trumpet lessons like 25 years ago :D And I come back to it even today. Thanks for the advice regarding minor keys / other scales. I had the same idea lately. My teacher also inspired me to practice the whole exercise staccato to improve tonguing. I wonder whether people ever proceeded to other exercises beyond No. 2. At least here on KZbin, you can only find No. 2 :D (since my practice routine wasn't too strict when I was a child, it took me like 1-2 years to get up to full tempo, but it's definitely worth it!).

I practice many Clarke exercises on a regular basis, both from the Technical Studies and the Setting Up Drills.

I would like to know your approach to pages 42-44 in Arban’s.
@AirflowMusicNYC5 жыл бұрын
Do me a favour and email a pic of those pages to office[at]airflowmusic[dot]com - my Arban book is the British Cornet Method edition from 30+ years ago. I want to make sure I’m explaining the correct pages!

Bryan thanks once again for the excellent content. I use the iRealPeo app on a major ii-V-I with Clarke 2 great fun. Do you have any thoughts on the Schlossberg daily drills.

Hope you say something about the Costello/Stevens embourchure method. It is not an easy read. I am trying to change to that fat lipped method.
@AirflowMusicNYC5 жыл бұрын
You’re right, it can be a challenging read. It might be time for me to go through it all again. More experience and other perspectives may make it easier.

Question regarding Clarke 1: I have never been able to reach even the low goal of eight repetitions in one breath. What can help get me from 6-7 repetitions to 8 repetitions in one breath?
@AirflowMusicNYC5 жыл бұрын
Proper breath support and not blowing are the key. See the following episode for tips on this - kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4eWloWkbdtkbbM Also, perhaps obviously, you need to develop speed, while remaining smooth and even. Practice them slowly, as I suggested in this video for Clarke #2, to get your smooth effortless version together. It’ll be easier to speed that up and play faster while staying under control. Thanks for watching.

Thanks Bryan, this was very helpful. I noticed you weren't using the slide on the low C#. Was this intentional?
@AirflowMusicNYC5 жыл бұрын
I didn’t notice - I usually do. Sometimes these things slip when I’m concentrating on the camera etc.
@bahutu8023 жыл бұрын
My trumpet teacher once told me, since at the end those exercises are meant to be played quite fast, it might be ok to omit the slide at fast speed since it's mainly about the finger / tongue exercise. Don't know if other teachers tell it the same way...

Another excellent video Bryan, thanks! Just out of curiosity, do you ever actually get rude feedback?
@AirflowMusicNYC5 жыл бұрын
Occasionally, so I’m just trying to set the house rules going in.
@Maurio19964 жыл бұрын
After practicing this exclusively for a month I concur that these exercises have made me a worst trumpet player than I was before I started these. Maybe it’s just my frustration talking
@AirflowMusicNYC4 жыл бұрын
Who are you concurring with? Am I not seeing a comment from somebody else? In what way are you finding yourself playing worse? Are you now unable to play something else that you were able to play previously? Or are you listening more critically to yourself than you were before? If it’s the latter, then don’t beat yourself up. There is ALWAYS room for improvement, for all of us. The trick is to enjoy the journey, rather than being too focused on the destination.

@@AirflowMusicNYC top line F has become a struggle for me and most of my notes starting at C in the staff has become essentially harder to play. I don’t know what’s going on
@AirflowMusicNYC4 жыл бұрын
Rereading your original comment: by practicing this exclusively, do you mean that you've just been practicing Clarke 2 and nothing else? If so, there's your answer. You haven't been playing those notes as much, so they're a little out of practice. Clarke 2 is a classic exercise to practice for a reason but, like anything else, it's not the only thing you need to practice to build and maintain technique.

@@Maurio1996 practicing just one exercise is , well, BORING. Your practice sessions should be varied. Some rudiments like Clark and Arban but also play some tunes you might like. Popular music that you can find on you tube. How about Amazing Grace. I play that one often and in a variety of keys.
