I had a 172 that got stuck in off airport mud and had to leave it behind until things dried out a bit. When I went back to retrieve it I thought the surface would probably be pretty soft still, so brought a Landis fork and 8.50 nose wheel to swap out for the takeoff (already had 8.00's on the mains). It turned out the surface was pretty dry, but very rough. A small nose wheel on a soft/rough surface is a detriment in every way when takeoff distance is critical. Every soft spot and hole drags hard and worse keeps pitching you down so it is hard to get the weight off the mains early. The 8.50 up front sets the attitude nicely for a soft/short field take off, with a fraction of the drag that you'd have with the smaller nose wheel. Getting into fun places, having the 8.50's is by far the biggest bang for the buck.

Absolutely love this. Now, it needs a Sportsman STOL leading edge cuff. It’s an inexpensive mod - far less expensive than the AirGlas fork (if you can do labor and have your IA sign you off) - and it’ll significantly reduce stall speed and improve low speed controllability.

Love this. Thx for the information. I’ve owned a ‘65 E model since I was 24 years old and I’m now 61. Time to spruce the 150 up! Again! Lol It’s getting it’s ADS-B out this week. The tires setup hopefully this fall. Godspeed

And, I see your tires are a little bald. That's cool. We would run all the tread off the tires on our 207's and then 'recycle' them to our private planes.

Can you put the link to some of the parts? I’m in the process of buying a 150/150 and hate the baby tires

👍😎Looks awesome. Is it possible to get the main gear kegs re-arched or taller main gear legs to help bring the tail up a little? (more for off airport ops wanting to float the front wheel a little and not drag the tail😉).
@bryanweathers73412 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure that exists for tricycle 150’s. I know it’s been done in conjunction with a tailwheel conversions though 👍

How much weight & drag does that add? Does the old tow bar still work?
@bryanweathers73412 жыл бұрын
It added a total of around 17 pounds and the old tow bar doesn’t work. I altered my old tow bar to open more by removing the lock and it’s worked great for me👍

Great vid thanks. I’ve just bought a 150M and cant wait to do this mod. How much speed did you loose in normal cruise?

What was total price for all components including tires? Been wanting to do this to my 172. Im seeing $3300.00 just for the nose gear portion on Airglas website. Any other way to go that you may know of?

Nice mod. Thinking of doing it myself. Did it impact cruise speed or climb rate?

What windshield / windows are those?
@bryanweathers73412 жыл бұрын
As far as I know they are the original. I re-surfaced them with a buffer and scratch remover though that worked really well.
