Ex-army here; one small observation I have is to pull the pull-through in one smooth motion. When you allow the pad to come to a stop within the barrel, even for an instant, it can deposit some of what it's cleaned.

Useful indeed. A local gunshop told me: "Clean the mud and grit off; Dry it; Oil the surfaces very lightly; Fire a lead pellet to clean the barrel". No Sergeant that I've ever met would be impressed with that advice.

Hi Andy, enjoy your videos and bought a CLX back in October. When I got it home and checking out all the lovely bits, my first PCP and first new rifle since a second hand BSA bought in Southend back in 1960. Well not having a garden to really try it out, I went about making things for it, like a single-shot tray. Before I got the machining of the tray done, I noticed that sometimes the gun did not cock, even though I'd pulled the bolt back till it stopped, then after a few pulls, it would show the red flag at the side. So I put in my single shot tray and fed a pellet, but being in the house I did not want to push it into the barrel and waving the gun around could not understand where the pellet had gone. Search all over the dark carpet and the cushions but still could not find the pellet, then noticed that when the probes retracts there is a big gap around it, and reasoned that it must have fallen inside. No amount of tapping would rattle it, so found it was only one screw that holds the block/barrel to the stock, and through the slot, I could see the fresh lost pellet, but there was also another in there, but it was not a pellet and was magnetic and looked like a squashed eyelet and that must have been in there from the shop. As you can imagine, I was puzzled for a while when the gun after cocking would not fire and that the fix, in the end, was easy.

Thank you for this, useful for everyone (including seasoned shooters). For wooden stocks, after cleaning CCL Gunstock Conditioning Oil is an excellent product that gives a nice lustre to oiled stocks and even lacquered ones too. For the external metalwork, I keep a lightly oiled (Balistol) cloth in the cabinet, and wipe the barrel and metalwork down after every use. It's important as you say, to keep it lightly oiled, and if you can see any oil on the metalwork it's too much.

I find a cloth to be far from ideal for cleaning my rifles they don't get into the nooks and crannies. I use a good quality dry paint brush with soft bristles, gets into everywhere. I then use the same type of brush to apply the protective oil, makes sure it gets everywhere it should. Just thought I would add my way of cleaning and hope some find it beneficial.

For the rusting.Yes,definitely wipe your gun after shooting.Especially a break barrel and especially if it was warm outside and you have been sweating. They will rust where you grab and break the barrel if not wiped down afterwards.Good quick wipe with ballistol does the trick or any other gun cleaner/lube.

Good, solid advice Andy. It's good that someone is doing the basics for beginners or people who don't know more experienced shooters who can offer help and advise. One thing though, with those shoot-through cleaners I was told that you should shoot them with a pellet loaded behind them in the breach, so definitely don't pop one at your mate😒

Andy very good advice as always! I have cocking problem with AA S400, very tough pulling bolt! Tiny touch black gun grease on bolt sleeve made no difference! AA says hammer rail needs cleaned and tiny touch of thin oil applied! Tamper screws have to be removed using left hand drill -allows access to top screws ! Apparently it’s legal to remove anti-tamper as long as your gun is sub 12fb after assembly! IfI had to send my rifle to AA freight and RFD charges would cost me £70 at least! Just to clean a hammer rail! As a retired business machines engineer I will do it myself!

I bought a Crosman 1077 for my daughter recently. It was on clearance for a really good price. As soon as I got it home, I knew why it had been put on clearance - someone had obviously used it and returned it, because I found a spent CO2 capsule in it. It turned out that the barrel was blocked to within about 3" of the muzzle. I have no idea if it was full of pellets, or if maybe someone had tried to push the stuck pellets out with a rod and got the rod stuck too. I decided that it wasn't worth the headache to try and get it unblocked, so I just returned it to the store and ordered another one online.

Andy.... I am a bit of a newcomer to air rifles, although have many decades with powder weapons..... and finally succumbed and bought a little BSA springer. Nice little gun that cost very little..... but.... it has an anti-beartrap device that will not allow it to be de-cocked without firing it. I know why it's there because releasing the trigger on a cocked but open springer would be a bit.... nasty. I also know that firing springers without a pellet in it is not kind on the piston etc. I did de-cock it at first by putting the muzzle down firmly on the carpeted gun room floor and pulling the trigger, which seemed to work well. What do you think? Being a gun smith, I have taken the gun apart a bit and removed the antii-beartrap device as I am experience enough not to really need it, and can jusr de-cock the rifle by hanging on to the barrel in the open position, releasing the trigger and gently closing it up, as we used to do before such things and anti-beartraps were the norm. I can easily re-fit the parts should I ever sell the rifle, which of course I would do, but I just wondered what you think of my idea of giving things a bit of resistance via the carpet on the floor... 🙂

One quick tip for those with Moderator/silencer/Suppressor/Can🤔 If you dont want to remove said item insert a drinking straw into it to enable the pull through to be threaded through and pull out normally. This also has the advantage that any residue in the Mod gets removed from the baffles as well. Great vid and yep i can fully believe what people can do, have seen it all too often... the scope is a classic but thats because people think it have to be really tight🤣

I had it a couple of time where the pellet got stuck half way into the chamber and the mag, making it not able to shoot , and not able to remove the pellet mag, the only way is to use a ram rod to push the pellet back into the pellet mag so that you can remove the mag. Of course most of these occur due to pellet length and design (aside from the normal pellet)

I reloaded and shot again yo figure out what's going on. After the fourth shot I couldn't load no more. As ot turned out the cyllinder didn't have enough pressure to actually push the pellet out of the barrel. Thankfully inserting a cleaning rod managed to unstuck them.

I have been using silicone spray (Walther brand) for a long time on my PCPs, precharged pneumatics and CO2 guns and have had zero issues. The precharged pneumatics in particular have full metal on metal contact in the air chamber and I find it works well (and is great on seals/o-rings). Hi Andy I’m trying to get back into the Airgun scene I’m on a budget £250 top prefer 177 cal needs to be back garden friendly I have a large rural garden small pest control (rats) and some target shooting I’ve completely confused myself by watching so many reviews I’ve sort of got things in mind gas piston can be multi shot or single and last thing levering me money left to get pellets 🙂thanks for even reading this o yes thanks for you very informative reviews if it wasn’t for them I probably wouldn’t have wanted to start shooting again big thumbs up Andy.

Hi Mark, First thing that comes to mind is the Gamo Varmint Swarm, this is about square in your budget. I believe they even come with a starter scope. Excellent quality and accuracy and 10 round multishot… it will take care of your small pest problem and have fun on the range. Stay Safe. Andy

Hi Andy Love the vids , thanks very much for all your time and hatd work and excellent advice . I wonder if you could answer a query, I was recently advised by a gun shop owner to use common motor oil whilst cleaning and maintaining the barrel of an air rifle. I feel that a much thinner more refind iol is necessary . Your thoughts / comments would be much appreciated . Kind regards Ian

I use a much thinner oil to clean and protect the barrels on my guns, I use VA40 from Vector air, common car oil would be far too thick for my preference. hope this helps, Stay safe. Andy

With a pull through you did not mention it is important to pull strait, avoiding contact with the barrel crown which long term will cause damage and inaccuracy.
