@CoreyLaheyTrevor more than 1,000 white civilian women flew military aircraft in the U.S. And nearly 1,000 Black men trained as military pilots and flew in segregated units. After the war, airlines refused to hire these experienced women and Black men. Opinion Two decades later, David E. Harris became the first Black pilot at a major airline when American Airlines hired him in 1964. White women waited until 1973 when Frontier Airlines hired Emily Howell Warner. As someone who has done all their pilot training on their own dime. The solution lies in subsidizing flight school and not allowing airlines to use bailouts for stock buybacks and executive bonuses. Flight school cost me around 50k to get to the point where I could get a job and that job only pays 30/hr and that is only for flight time. This does not include any setup or preparation on the ground. It is a very rewarding career but there are major issues when young pilots are working multiple jobs and eating ramen to support themselves while they fly in the early stages of the career. Also, end the 1500 hour rule and make it 750 to be a first officer.

Diversity won’t change anything. Pilot shortage? There is a lot of commercial pilots out there including me. The whole system is a Ponzi scheme. Let me explain. Almost all new pilots hired by the airlines are Pilots that build their hours doing pilot training as Flight Instructors. To get to 1500 hrs you would have to train about 5 pilots from zero time to Commercial with multi engine and instrument ratings. So maybe the are right, they need 5 student pilots to pay for every future first officer flight time. The problem with that model is that flight training is really expensive and fever people can afford it. It is time to change the system and lower the time requirements by putting new pilots with senior pilots to help them gain experience flying for the airlines. Airlines should be paying for this.
@jamesroberts3642 Жыл бұрын
Na...I think the change should come in this way....White men have to have HIGHER hour requirements, but black people, especially black women, should have ZERO hour requirements after they get their commercial. I am opposed to hiring based on race, sex, age, religious preference. Yet the airlines celebrate it as a victory when they do. What i am in favor of is the right person qualified for the job. Regardless of factors such as race, sex, religious preference, age. If the majority of the qualified applicants are white males, so be it. The thought behind my thinking is equality of opportunity. EVERYONE should have EQUAL opportunities. Companies are willing to sacrifice qualifications in an applicant in favor of racial preference and gender preference. This is prejudice and discrimination based on race and sex, and there are words for that. Racism and Sexism. Disgusting and backwards. should the public be concerned about race playing a role in employment? absolutely. the data is there. clear as day. when companies hire based on race and sex instead of qualifications, performance suffers. and in the case of an airline or the medical field, safety suffers. It also discredits the perception towards the hard-working minority men and women who are well qualified and deserve their jobs based on their qualifications. It is reasonable someone may ask "Are they flying this Boeing because they are the best qualified or are they flying this Boeing because they're a black woman?" although to ask that in today's political climate would be deemed as an expression of racism and sexism. In today's political climate to criticize the racist and sexist hiring practices of companies is considered racist and sexist by the racist and sexists themselves. I am a captain (pilot) for an American owned airline, and this is a worry to me, as my company has recently hired a person in a Diversity, Inclusion and Equity role. I am opposed to it. It is morally wrong. And it will kill as it already has. I have a suspicion our training department and standards department will have to put politics aside when training underqualified pilots--the last thing we want is another Atlas Airlines crash.

Of course it qualify pilot is a qualify pilot. The thing is if you have a list of 100 people that completed flight instruction and want to be the next pilot for this airline. Out of those hundred people there's going to be a ranking from one to 100 just because they all completed instruction doesn't mean they're all completely equal and had the same skill level. Some are going to be more qualified than others based on their level of skill shown while flying with instructors, their scores on tests which shows their ability to retain the information needed to fly safely. Their scores on the flight simulator showing their level of skill and know how when there's a dangerous situation or when there's a problem with the plane whether it be their instruments are malfunctioning or maybe the landing gear won't go down etc. How they deal with those type of situations in the flight simulator shows how they deal with stress and if they're able to keep a cool head and still remember what they need to do and those type of situations and their ability to act instead of Panic. Their ability to perform in a stressful situation is invaluable when it comes to flying a plane and being responsible for hundreds of lives. So out of these hypothetical 100 people that have all done the same instruction and completed the same training they're still going to be a ranking of 1 to 100 based on their scores and their skill level. Now let's say there's 40 black people out of 100 and 20 of those are black women. Now it's possible that all those black women rank right at the top of the list. But for this hypothetical let's pretend that they rank near the bottom of the list. In this hypothetical let's say this airline needs to hire 10 new pilots out of this list of 100 people. Let's also say for this hypothetical that these 20 black women rank at the bottom of the list. Like I said I'm not saying in real life they necessarily would they get rank right at the top but I'm just giving up hypothetical to prove my point. So let's say they rank at the bottom of the list. They have 10 jobs to fill and because of this quota four of those jobs have to go to black women. So now those four pilots positions are going to be filled by much less qualified candidates. Those positions should be filled by the absolute best most qualified highest scoring candidate for the job no matter what race or sex they are. This should be true for every job but especially when you were in a position where you are responsible for hundreds of people's lives on a daily basis. If there's 10 jobs to fill that top 10 highest scoring people most qualified people out of those hundreds should get the jobs. If the top 10 most qualified people on the list are black women then they should get the jobs. If the top 10 or a couple black women a couple white men and a couple Asian men then they should get the job. And if the top 10 are all white men then they should get the job.

Right. Because no plane has ever crashed in the history of mankind with White men designing, building, flying, and maintaining them. I agree DEI/affirmative action is problematic and can be unfair but there should be a push to ensure everyone is qualified at the same level while diversifying, not a push to all of a sudden blame POC and women for issues in aviation (which is a logical fallacy and scapegoating). The issue of why DEI became a thing in the first place is much deeper and quite layered, but no one wants to talk about that. Also, training costs and resulting wages have been a factor. I've seen civilian pilots (who didn't go the military route) get all their certifications/hours and go broke, leaving the profession from trying to make a career of it after because the pay sucked and the pipeline to captain is rough. They can't afford to pay off their flight loans let alone their everyday bills. It's finally getting better but we have a ways to go.

They conveniently omit the washout rate for targeting to a specific demographic. Not everyone is meant to be a pilot. Just like not everyone is meant to be a doctor or lawyer. Diversity isn't the issue, money is the issue. The cost and the wage, not the skin color or the gender.
@AkPacerPilot2 жыл бұрын
The problem with the pilot shortage is 100% the time and cost to get to the point that you qualify to be a copilot in an airliner, and that has everything to do with the rules the FAA put in place governing the minimum hours required for ATP. A new atp pilot isn’t ready to fly in the right seat as a FO (co pilot) any better because of the 1000 to 1500 hr rule (depending on how you get your training). Remove the ATP requirement, allow 500 hr commercial pilot to ride in the right seat with a second in command type rating, so long as your captain has an appropriate time in the specific aircraft such as 5000 hrs in type. And allow atp 1500 hr co pilots to ride with 2000 hr in type captains. Then you could also discuss ending the mandatory 65 age retirement age for atp ops, and rely on the 1st class medical to weed out people who need to retire due to unfit health.

Diversity is great but it’s not the real problem. It’s the cost of training. Now let’s think for a minute… if it’s a 95% white male dominant field then there would not be a shortage of pilots. The airline would keep filling positions according to these statistics. However , the drop in positions filled is due to another issue. Remember everyone dreams of becoming a pilot. Airlines would not have an issue recruiting qualified pilots if it wasn’t for the training cost! It doesn’t matter what ethnic background you are from. The cost of training is keeps everyone away from pursuing their dreams of becoming a pilot. God bless!

The absolutely fascinating thing about this…..how the current generation of “young” (I’ll throw people in their 30 and even 40’s) pilots complain about 1500hrs and low wages…..as tho they have hurdles and sacrifices. Let me tell you, I was hired in 2001 at my first regional airline flying passengers for a couple of major airlines (Express, Connection etc), for $16.50/flight hr……all while having 1850hrs of Total Time and 350 multi-engine and having done an ATP rating in a Duchess….let that sink in for a second. The airlines BARELY looked in my direction. All that plus only making $20-$30k my first year! Over the years while a captain at the regionals, I’ve had furloughed major airline pilots as my First Officers…..again, think about that for a second (sacrifice, dedication to a craft from those just trying to keep the dream of flying alive). I’m sorry if this sounds unsympathetic to the “current” kids hoping for a airline career but in reality, the previous generation put up with a HELL of A LOT more…..all while the regionals kept pay low and work hours long, knowing they could because there was a guy/gal right behind you willing to do it for less! Listen, know I sound like old guy kicking kids off the lawn…..but rather, it’s perspective. It’s an amazing and wonderful career and should be pursued but it’s not given, not for a second! The dedication and commitment to the craft are essential. Yes, airline subsidizing are needed, appropriate pay and work rules are needed but an applicant needs to know, just because they want you doesn’t guarantee or give you a pass for a lack of skills. At the end of all that training, sadly I’ve seen and heard of regionals letting people go because they just can’t pass a checkride…..and that’s the right thing to do! Just because you choose this career, nothings given at the end. Dedication, sacrifice, situational awareness, training, skills, keep everyone safe is the foundation and necessity. Keep your focus and be humble, keep learning. I wish all the future aviators good luck on their career paths.

Excellent Post.. I am a 66-year-old female that obtain my private pilot license in 1989. I passed my instrument as well. Was going to college for an aviation associate degree at the same time and working. I knew that the road ahead was a long and expensive one. Learning to fly and to keep safe is a constant state of learning training and being vigilant. Not everyone can easily absorb the vast amount of information required to be a pilot and you also deal with the mini possible issues that can happen in flying. You can’t make many mistakes and you just can’t pull over to the side of the road. After careful consideration, I decided it was not for me. You constantly have to be vigilant. In the long run, I’m glad I stayed with the career I was in and did not become a pilot. Like you said, all of the experience is earned and it doesn’t come easy. Also for a pilot to gain hours can they be a good instructor as a CFI? As far as this video is talking about diversity, all I care about as a passenger is that the pilot that can do the job extremely well, because all of our lives are at stake. Airlines just need to hire the most qualified.

United airline pilots went on strike at LAX because their wages are from a 2016 contract that hasn’t been updated to the times, and there was no sign of anything changing anytime soon. The shortage is not because of lack of diversity, the shortage is because of the lack of wage. Also, flight school is not affordable. If they need pilots that badly they should be funneling the money into reducing flight school costs. I’m probably saying it more simple than it seems but.

It's unfortunate that this article ignores the economics of being a pilot while brushing over the high costs, in money and time, required to become a pilot. As in many industries, pilot salaries have plummeted, as have their benefits. Airlines aren't interested in people of color now for an altruistic, egalitarian interest. They don't have a choice because the white males they used to recruit have left the field for better compensation. Missing this simple fact is just lazy or consciously negligent. The fact that no women in America make less per hour for the same work done by white males than Black women tells the real story as to why these corporations are excited about hiring Black women. The race and gender pay gaps in America guarantee profit increases when "white work" becomes "diverse".

In aviation there is a concept called " sterile cockpit " is a safety procedure " to avoid loss of situational awareness. This is more critical when " close " to airport environment. Pilots should be very very focused on flying the aircraft , ATC ,Traffic,Terrain and clearances . We see here an interview in the middle of these critical moments . You can hear the ATC in the back and the instructor is doing an extra effort to look for traffic and separate her attention to the interview from the ATC instructions . Pilots should be instructed and induced since zero hours to create the habit of sterile cockpit . Situational awareness is a huge thing in aviation

funny how the meaning of the words equity and equality are not mentioned. in an ideal world, everyone would have an equal opportunity of education, be able to reach out in the same way, and have the same opportunities of employment. Sadly that is not the case.. but regardless, the bar for entry should be the same for everyone to enter a particular field. especially one so critical. so the airlines out there looking for people of a particular gender, or race to fill roles.... is disturbing. this is societal problem. not a corporate one. The FAA should start by having a hard look at why the barrier of entry to flight training is so high, and if they are partly to blame for that. There is a LOT that can be done from a regulatory aspect to free up new technologies to lower the cost and increase safety of aircraft for pilot training. and other GA and EA.

In my opinion there is no shortage of pilots, there is shortage of ground workers. That's why this mess is happening, ground people were fired during the pandemic and have not been hired back. Ground workers' incomes are very low because companies only invest in pilots and cabin crews, so the few that were not fired are expected to work extra with the same wage. That may have worked in the past, but with the pandemic people discovered they no longer will work long hours with no conditions. There's more to life than just work. Only pilots and cabin crew and by themselves are not the airlines. A change in minset is needed in aviation.
