Good video. I’ve been running a SDR stick into a Raspberry Pi and feeding to FlightAware, FR24, and ADSB Exchange for years. For amateurs and people interested in military and private aircraft, I highly recommend ADSB Exchange as they do not honor requests to block or mask aircraft, which is common practice by business aviation and the military. Fun story, I’m an airline pilot and we had been told the airport was going to close due to AF1 coming in. ATC wouldn’t tell us how long we had, so I used ADSB Exchange to track AF1 and saw they were about 20 mins out. We rushed to get off the gate early and snuck out just before they closed the airport.

Nice. I have been running an ADS-B box for about the last 12 years. It is a first generation Kinetic Avionics SBS-1, still going strong. I am a aircraft enthusiast and live under the approach to Manchester (UK) and also under the main Northern Airways in the UK going North -South (Pole Hill) and East -West across the UK from Europe to North America. Mine is a stand alone, not connected to the Internet, that covers my local area, allowing for geography and has its own dedicated laptop so I can take it mobile up on top of the local hills on a nice day, with a couple of spare laptop batteries and its remote aerial with an old cookie jar lid as a ground plane for the magnetic base of the aerial for better coverage as the SBS-1 box is usb powered. I am a "tail number" spotter, so mine has been modified to show me if I have seen that particular aircraft or not before, instead of searching through my various "Tail numbers" books every time an aircraft appears on my screen.

Some of these aircraft tracking places will actually send you free equipment to set up and use to track aircraft. The cavaet is you have to dedicate your computer 24/7 for sending aircraft location. For an school HAM radio club might be a good idea.........

Excellent vid, thank you. Would you please make vid on small budget friendly listening to local airband communications without the need of computer? Eg I bought CCrane Skywave, but would prefer small cheap handheld like Baofend uv5r, but that doesn't have the frequency range and modulation. I think there are a lot of guys like me who dream about flying and would love listen in, but without pc or smartphone. I would consider buying used, but cannot sift through the web what radios to look at and new ones are at least ~$200... Anyway, this was great vid and I might consider playing with pc solution too

Hi, I just ordered the subject antenna (VHF Airband Outdoor Antenna by AirNav) which comes with a 7.5 meter cable. May I possibly know what particular cable comes with this antenna? Also, if I need to add 50 more feet of cable, can I use the bigger coaxial RG 8 cable? The smaller coaxial cable is the RG 58. I was told if the total antenna cable length is over 50 feet, better to use the RG 8 (low-loss cable).

I read about that fancy word but have slept since then. On ADS-B is gives more accurate location but it seem to me that it's not used that much and kind of rare . You have to be 1 of 4 sending information on an aircraft and it's line of sight . Maybe the other receivers are too far away. Can you tell where they are?
@xraydelta1
@xraydelta1 3 жыл бұрын
@grovermatic Make certain that your configured location is very accurate. Wrong location screws with timings and prevents good sync.

@@doublej4077 Yeah, ADS-B Exchange has an mlat map. Apparently there are quite a few aviation nerds here in Dayton, OH. 🛩️ TBH My contribution probably won't add much value given the concentration of existing feeders in the area, but I still want to "join the club" so to speak.

Has anyone done something like this for local fire or police? It would be fantastic to be able to see response units in action on a real time map. I’m sure police would balk, but they are public entities and should be subject to public scrutiny. This information would be invaluable in an emergency event. Of course transponders would need to be on all equipment and since ground based it might be a bit more complex to relay locations, but cell infrastructure could used to facilitate.
