@@DesertHomesteader Yes, it's made from two long pieces of wood with a gap between them. When you hit someone with it, the two pieces slap together and make a nice loud sound, even though you only tapped the person lightly. So you could simulate hitting someone really hard with a stick, without actually injuring them. However, most of the humor in this movie is not slapstick. The stewardess bocking people on the head with the guitar is slapstick, and there are other slapstick gags like that. But most of the humor is spoof and parody and plays on words.

The plane taking off is a direct spoof of a wartime movie, where the soldier is about to leave on a train. The conductor says "better get on board, son." As the train picks up speed, the girlfriend runs along, talking to him from the open vestibule. She has to dodge the uprights for the station lights (a bit odd), as they converse about his pocket watch. Type on KZbin: since you went away 1944 train scene In Airplane, we see the railroad conductor in full garb, and the pilot pulls back what seems a loco throttle, as we hear chugging sounds. Here she runs INTO the light stands.
@markvargus65196 ай бұрын
This was perhaps the first and best known spoof movie ever made. The Zucker brothers actually purchased the rights to remake the film Zero Hour as about 70-80% of the dialogue is straight from the original Zero Hour script. They used the original and then added in all of the jokes. The movie was best known at the time for the number of serious actors they brought in. With the exception of the man playing Johnny who was supposedly encouraged to improve, all of the other actors were asked to play their parts straight. This included Leslie Neilsen, who played the doctor and had a long and distinguished career as a serious actor including playing the lead in the original Forbidden Planet, but who would star in many comedies after Airplane, mostly playing similar characters to the doctor character where he is largely the straight man to the script itself. Another thing you didn't seem to catch was that the humor was based on three elements. There is a lot of double entendre in the movie, where they made minute changes to the script, but ended up with a joke that is a mild sexual reference. Most of that is wink wink style and definitely a product of its time. Then you had a lot of pun or misinterpretation jokes. Things like the call from the Mayo clinic and we see the doctor sitting at a desk in front of a bunch of shelves filled with jars of mayonaise, or the question "A ___ what is it?" being answered with the definition of the object. The final type were slapstick humor. Things like the watermelon falling to the desk when McCroskey says "You'll have to talk him right down to the ground" or a more subtle play on slapstick was the man who thought himself Ethel Merman, he was played by the actual Ethel Merman in her last appearance in a movie before her death. Airplane is considered one of the 3 best comedy movies ever made by most people. it definitely is a product of its time, but so is Blazing Saddles. Sad that you couldn't get into it and just have fun, but I know that does happen to some reactors who don't understand just what the movie is. There is no message, or attempt to do anything other than entertain. You are supposed to find something in the movie that makes you laugh just about constantly, and I noticed that despite your complaints, both of you smiled and laughed quite a bit throughout your reaction.

Funny when folks say this is an 80s movie, 💯 70’s, released 1980; the 80s literally have not happened yet. Also the “never has a second cup of coffee at home” joke is a reference to a lame forgotten TV commercial where the restaurant is serving a particular brand the husband prefers, unbeknownst to his wife.

A lot of people think this was a spoof of the "Airport" series of movies but it's really an almost scene for scene spoof of a 1950s movie called "Zero Hour" and even though it wasn't required, they got permission from the reluctant copyright holder of Zero Hour to make AIRPLANE!. The only reason he gave his permission is they told him that it would be a "B" movie with unknown actors and would have limited release but when it premiered with very well-known actors, he threatened to sue them. I don't know what happened, maybe they settled or maybe he realized he didn't have or he was told he didn't have a case because copyright laws allows for spoofs.

"Can you fly this plane, and land it?" "Surely you can't be serious." "I am serious... and don't call me Shirley." Classic comedy. Laugh a minute and very quotable. Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Julie Hagerty. Celebrity Pilot Fact: In a 2008 interview, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar told the story of being on a European flight and asked to sit in an empty seat in the cockpit during takeoff so the crew could say they flew with Roger Murdoch. Better Living Through Chemistry Fact: At one point, a woman (Nora Meerbaum) refuses alcohol in favor of sniffing cocaine. Although seemingly righteous and indigent at being offered alcohol, she is correct in refusing a depressant (whiskey) if she was going to take a stimulant (cocaine). White-Red Zone Fact: Regarding the argument between announcers concerning the white and red zones at the airport, the producers hired the same voice artists who had made the real-world announcements at Los Angeles International Airport. At the real airport, the white zone is for loading and unloading of passengers only, and there's no stopping in the red zone (except for transit buses). They were also married to each other in real life. Casting Notes Fact: Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker chose actors such as Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, and Leslie Nielsen because of their reputation for playing no-nonsense characters. Until this film, these actors had not done comedy, so their "straight-arrow" personas and line delivery made the satire in the movie all the more poignant and funny. Bridges was initially reluctant to take his role in the movie, but his sons persuaded him to do it.

I've seen foreigners react to this movie and get most of the jokes. A lot of Americans don't get the humor because their uncultured, don't read and can't fathom that there's more than one type of humor. If you've ever watched any of the Looney Toons, are Bull Winkle cartoons or read The Far Side comic strip this should be right up your alley. Hell even if you've seen "South Park" or "Family Guy" you should recognize this type of humor. You would swear the Scary Movie franchise never existed from watching this brain dead reaction. Little things to look for: Ted was in the Air Force but at the bar he's wearing a Navy Lt. Uniform. Elaine's trombone at the bar sounds like a trumpet. One of the fish was a freshwater catfish. A woman throws a baby into the air when the plane crashes through the window. Two Hari Krishnas actually fly out of the airport. Captain Kramer steps out of a mirror before leaving for the airport. The woman with the horse in bed is the creepy Captain Oveur's wife. She is also hitting on to Captain Kramer. It's a jet but the background noise is of a prop plane. The ambulance crashes after the plane lands. 3. Otto/Auto pilot has his own webpage on IMDB 4. Elaine has permission to sit on MY face. 5. IMVHO Airplane II is good too, destination moon.
