My favorite song by Lynyrd Skynyrd is Simple Man followed by in no particular order Free Bird, Tuesday’s Gone, Call Me The Breeze and The Ballad of Curtis Lowe. I was lucky enough to see them three times before the plane crash with the first being at The Tennessee State Fair in 1974 in Nashville while I was stationed at Ff. Campbell, Kentucky. Skynyrd played first then ZZTop and it was a rockin good time and in my humble opinion Lynyrd Skynyrd stole the show.

The drummer on this particular track was Robert Nix of The Atlanta Rhythm Section. He filled in for Bob Burns bc Bob wasn’t feeling well the day this song was recorded. Apparently he laid down that drum part in one take. To say he nailed it would be an epic understatement.

I have lived in Green Cove Springs ( Jax,Fl.) my whole life and Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet , Blackfoot, 38 special are by products of and represent the area well with their Southern Rock music. I run into Johnny Van Zant , Gene Odom ( Band Manager and Ronnie’s best friend sometimes at Walmart or McDonalds and forget how down to earth and personal they are! Nicest people you will meet. Can’t wait for y’all to explore some of their songs that were “ too long” for radio play but to me are some of their best masterpieces ( Mr.Banker, 4 walls of Raiford,etc )

Any song from Skynyrd's first 4 albums that are on their Live album "One More From the Road" is worth listening to because even though they basically played their songs exactly as they were recorded in the studios Live , as you well must know , get up on stage in front of an enthusiastic crowd and those same songs , though the same , become completely different . I Know you know what I mean ! "Tuesday's Gone" & "Freebird" are the same yet completely different in a live setting .

Heard ya mention another break-up song for the day. I guess it can be, but it is about a close contact losing their female partner. That's break-up, but in the worst way. Great job discussing lyrics and especially instrumentation every time. Your in the rabbit hole of some good sound.
@ChristopherRobinson-l5v9 ай бұрын
Part of me wishes they didn’t give the rights to this song to Happy Gilmore because I truly love both the song and the movie equally. But they’re so intertwined in my brain now that it lessens the impact of how great a song this is. Happy Gilmore is GOATED Sandler for me. I go: Happy Billy Madison Uncut Gems (10/10 drama) Adam Sandler is the new Dick Van Dyke after Dick dies… hopefully when he’s 200 years old.

As much as I love this song, I think the live version on One More from the Road is even better. And yeah, Ronnie was an amazing singer. Great reaction guys!! Unfortunately, Artemis Pyle (drums) and Leon Wilkerson (bass) often get overlooked, but I understand that because of the power of the vocals and guitars. But as you said, "They are locked in" and that is exactly right. Appreciate the call out for the drummer Artemis, now if we can just get some love for Leon. These guys are a helluva band and I have never heard a bad song by them. BTW you guys have just listened to two of the three premier Southern Rock bands. The other is the Allman Brothers.
@ElizabethJohnson-ss4ce8 ай бұрын
I agree regarding Artemis and Leon often being overlooked, but neither of them played on this album. The studio version had Robert Nix (from Atlanta Rhythm Section) on drums and Ed King played bass.

Forby Leonard Skinner (January 11, 1933 - September 20, 2010) was an American high school gym teacher, basketball coach, and businessman from Jacksonville, Florida. He is known in popular culture as the eponym of the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd; Skinner was the band members' teacher.

Can you imagine being in the other plane watching your friends and fellow bandmate crash. The survivors guilt must have been strong
@suecook13269 ай бұрын
@@davidtullis2810 They were all on a single plane. Ronnie was laying on the floor, sleeping when the trees scraped across the bottom. The 20 survivors had some seriously bad injuries, such as Billy Powell's nose was sheared off and had to be reattached. Allen suffered injured discs and his right hand took a beating. Artimus Pyle probably had the less injuries and was able to walk from the rural crash site to find help. The others couldn't walk. There's a documentary here on KZbin any Lynyrd Skynyrd fan might appreciate.

I remember in junior high I had this album well in fact I had all of their albums plus the Muscle Shoals recordings early on, but like a lot of kids that era of my life was the best of times and the worst of times, and when it was the worst of times, this was one of those songs that could actually make me feel somehow even though I was experiencing all the pain and the regret and the heartache expressed in his voice and in the overall arrangement, but it still rocked enough for a ballad that it kept me glued to it on that level as well. It evokes so many emotions! The Ballad Of Curtis Loew, if you haven't already done it. Also I bet you guys would love Railroad Song.
