1970... I am 16 years old at the "Strawberry Festival" in O.C. Calif.. and saw this band live. After doing a show in San Diego, on the bus to L.A. they were told about the festival, so they stopped, seeing a stage Ozzy Volunteered to play a couple, they had their guitars and a drum kit was there on stage... So.. Unscheduled, unannounced, unexpected. Black Sabbath did.... "Iron Man"... "Paranoid"... "The Wizard"... "War Pigs"... to about a crowd of 5,000.... It was awesome. Right place at the right time.

Me too, except I was in San Diego for that show. Great time to be in Southern Cal. We had Led Zep, Rolling Stones, and in 73 we had early Lynyrd Skynyrd at San Diego State (free concert).

Then I'm sorry to say that you weren't really listening. It def wasn't the same but as long as riff-master Tony was there, it was still Sabbath. And remember, Ward was gone also. All 4 members have their own distinct sound and should be able to be picked out of a sound line-up easily. The Ozzman was most definitely a perfect fit and extremely important to the band, no doubt - love that man's entire career - but take a listen to the first ten seconds of War Pigs and you instantly "identify" them as Sabbath, without any vocals. I understand exactly what you mean and feel. I lost interest also after Heaven and Hell - which was brilliant. I can't even name one album or song, I don't think, after that album.

The next tracks after The Wizard should be played together as track 3 - Wasp/Behind the Wall of Sleep/Basically/N.I.B. and then track 4 - Wicked World and finally track 5 - A Bit of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning. Sometimes they have these broken up in listings.

EXACTLY! It can’t be stressed enough when there’s a 2 or 3 part song, and it happens all the time one reaction channels cause the reaction crews won’t realize the difference and people often post them from recording broken up into separate tracks, though even on a CD the songs will still flow normally like the vinyl would.

The blues was largely overlooked in that time period. It was a few musicians from a small island called Britain that discovered the blues and realised its potential. That’s when bands such as the Rolling Stones, led zeppelin, black sabbath, pink Floyd, the Who etc. started to emerge and brought the blues to global dominance in the 60s and 70s.

Paranoid came out less than a year later. The first 4 albums in 2 years. The blueprint for heavy metal and the difference between S/T and Vol 4 is staggering. Everyone should listen to the first 4 Sabbath albums in a row at least once in their lives. Brilliant. Love the channel!

Che said it best. It’s easy to follow the logic of their riffs and hooks. Normally an album that was recorded in a few days, paid little to make, then shopped around to various labels only to be denied would never make it. At least one producer had the balls and a R&R soul, took a chance, pressed a few thousand copies and changed Rock forever. I still remember this first Sabbath release always having a very cool “underground” vibe even after millions sold. Cover art is perfect. 🤘

I was a teenager when this was released the album front cover got your attention then you opened the gatefold and inside was this poem. Still falls the rain, the veils of darkness shroud the blackened trees, which, contorted by some unseen violence, shed their tired leaves, and bend their boughs toward a gray earth of severed bird wings. Among the grasses, poppies bleed before a gesticulating death, and young rabbits, born dead in traps, stand motionless, as though guarding the silence that surrounds and threatens to engulf all those that would listen. Mute birds, tired of repeating yesterdays terrors, huddle together in the recesses of dark corners, heads turned from the dead, black swan that floats upturned in a small pool in the hollow. There emerges from this pool a faint, sensual mist, that traces its way upwards to caress the feet of the headless martyr's statue whose only achievement was to die too soon, and who couldn't wait to loose. The cataract of darkness forms fully, the long black night begins, yet still by the lake a young girl waits. Unseeing she believes herself unseen, she smiles faintly at the distant tolling bell, and the still falling rain. Then you put on the Album to hear the rain and thunder followed by the dark foreboding sound of the title track Black Sabbath the cover the poem the track the name Black Sabbath all fitted perfectly with the vibe. Sabbath being a religious day and the black inferring it was a religious day for the devil. They got the idea for the name from a cinema across the street from the band's rehearsal room showing the 1963 horror film Black Sabbath and made the decision to focus on writing material in an attempt to create the musical equivalent of horror films.
