Trip hop is a musical genre that originated in the late 1980s in the United Kingdom, especially Bristol, England. It has been described as a psychedelic fusion of hip hop and electronica with slow tempos and an atmospheric sound, often incorporating elements of jazz, soul, funk, reggae, dub, R&B, and other genres, typically of electronic music, as well as sampling from movie soundtracks and other eclectic sources. Triphop was so cool man, classic bands such as Sneaker Pimps, Massive Attack, UNKLE, Tricky, Portishead, Groove Armada, Morcheeba, Martina Topley-Bird, Lamb, DJ Shadow, you must check these bands out.

Hiya big influence on Trip hop was bands like the Young Gods from Switzerland . Cited by Massive Attack as major influence . I remember watching The Young Gods in a festival in the early nineties. I really can’t remember the festival. Could have been Glastonbury. But loved the Young Gods . Ahead of the the curve and so different at the time . Young Gods - Skin Flowers kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWezn6KqeLuMgq8si=V5IktUSb8uHLhMS4 Young Gods - Summer Eyes ( Doors influence in this one ) kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5KwZn5jh8qgkJosi=tloXdI4cBnk_A6LW

Very much the sound of late 80s Early 90s British cities. There was all this different music coming out of passing cars, houses, pirate radiom, Dub reaggae sound systems in the estates in the summer...and when all the different sub cultures started going raving togther...it was a musically diverse time

Good catch on the Isaac Hayes - the initial sample was from "Ike's Rap II." Tricky also used it for "Hell Is Round The Corner", if I remember correctly.

This Roseland Ballroom performance is everything! If you're curious about the Lupe sample, it's Celeste Legaspi "Bolery Medley". Celeste is a Filipino artist, so if you check out the song, she's singing in Tagalog. This part of the 90's was such an era! Love your guys' reactions!!

First comment ever on KZbin. lol. Love your Bowie reactions by the way. Astute perception on the whenever he says “time” comment. Anyways , saw Portishead in Auckland , NZ in 90’s. NZ crowd huge fans but very quiet , as we can be. Respectful to the show. Anyways Beth missed a cue and they came round again , and she missed again , crowd was silent . It was awkward. Then some dude called out “GO BETH” and suddenly the whole place lost it. We went nuts . It just went off from then and at the end they literally had to carry Beth off stage. I think she may have even got down into the crowd. She was so amped by the crowd. Magic moment. ! Also saw the Wailers live , no Bob sadly, when I was about 11, I think my parents thought it was some orchestral world music - he, he. Perhaps Bowie Wild is the Wind black and white video version someday. ? His vocals literally become the wind and trees. I love your guys takes. Thanks / Kia Ora.

I was fortunate enough to have seen Portishead in 1998... They were impeccable (a word I don't use often, mainly because I can't fucking spell it). Ade Utley, Geoff Barrow, and the lovely Beth Gibbons are devastating live. Seriously, one of the best shows, musically, that I've seen. 🖤

The Hayes sample well-spotted! Something special happened in the early to mid-nineties in Bristol - Portishead, Massive Attack, and Tricky, just to name the three biggest successes. Martina Topley Bird - the woman who sang with Tricky on his classic Maxinquaye album - has a solo album called Quixotic which I can't recommend enough. It didn't get its deserved props when it came out but has aged like the finest wine since

It's interesting that so many reactors are just discovering Portishead now. I head some KZbin "influencer" talking about how she heard the song on TikTop memes just the other day. Anyway, I bought this on CD when it came out and the whole album is a masterpiece. They typically get labeled as "trip hop" because there was a time when it was still very new to meld this sort of sound with hip hop beats and scratching. To that end you should definitely check out Tricky (he actually does a fantastic version of Public Enemy's "Black Steel") and Massive Attack.

Trip Hop's a favorite of mine. I suggest you look into Tricky doing a complete reinterpretation of Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" It's just called "Black Steel" but honestly anything from that era would be great. Everyone always listens to Portishead and Massive Attack and forget about Tricky

Y’all mentioned a familiarity with Lupe Fiasco. If you’re a fan Lupe recommends you should react to some Aesop Rock. I grew up on most of the music you react to and while I’ve always liked rap and hip hop I was always more into rock and metal. Aesop Rock, however, has become my favorite artist of any genre and while I know it’s not what you do here, I highly recommend you check him out on your own. If you want a good sampler playlist I’m happy to pick 10 or 12 great tracks to get you started. Loved the reaction btw.
