I always carry my expensive items in my carry-on! I also used a hat clip on my bag before however I don't suggest you use them as they always open & drop the hat. I'm headed to South Africa soon and I'll be doing cute comfort!

I have a hat bag but prior to me buying one what I did was stuffed clothes or anything that could fit in my hat (where my head goes) then put that as the first thing in my suitcase and pack my folded clothes around the hat on the brim. Basically the clothes in the hat keep the structure and the clothes around the brim keep the hat in place and it never took a lot of space. Hope this makes sense.

The problem with fast fashion is really an over consumption problem. Even luxury fashion houses are producing at the same rates as fast fashion with employees on slave wages. I loved that you mentioned finding pieces that will last. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, so the best we can do is love our pieces and buy less.
