The only fighter aircraft in history to get a radar lock on the SR-71 Blackbird. The american crew on "the sled" were sporty enough to actually send the swedish pilot a reward afterwards.
@Dennree997 жыл бұрын
source?
@leozzk6167 жыл бұрын
Source? The Swedish Airforce... The US would frequently fly over the Baltic Sea with its SR-71 Blackbird at very high altitudes and up to three times the speed of sound. Since Sweden had to intercept foreign aircraft regularly they had aircraft combat ready and could breakaway to pursuit. "It was routine for me, but I was at a very high altitude. The digital control data that was presented to me confirmed it was either one of two possible aircrafts - a Soviet MiG-25 or a SR-71. I looked at what was happening on the radar to see if there was any attempt at jamming, and then pursued the target." He then had a look to see if he could get a visual on the Blackbird.That was when I saw a graphite-grey aircraft pass me a few thousand meters above. To this day he still does not want to reveal the exact altitude at which he was at, but it was much higher than he had been earlier. The first thing P-O Eldh noticed was that the sky had suddenly become dark. From being blue just a few minutes earlier, it was now black. On my way down again, I could also clearly see the curvature of the earth. General Lennart Petterson is the chief of the Tactical Flight Command but also he was a fighter pilot back in the days. He clearly remembers how fast everything went which missions against the SR-71 involved and describes these events as the highlights of his career. "Each time was just as exciting and interesting. Intercepting the aircraft was tremendously difficult because of the high speeds and altitudes but it was one of the most extreme missions you could be a part of. When we succeeded, which we did most of the time, and afterwards could conclude that we actually would be able to shoot the SR-71 down if it were a live mission, it was quite pleasing since it was at the same time an evaluation of our professionalism."

As Le Ozzk wrote as a comment. :) I could add that even while "The Sled" tried to jam the Swedish Viggen, the Viggen received target data from radars on the ground and was thus able to keep a missile lock on the SR-71.

Great jet that has a look unlike any other Mach 2+ jet. Saab really knew how to build jets that were ahead of their time. The J-35 Draken is also a cool Saab jet thas about the size of a F-16. Hasegawa has an excellent J-35 1/72nd scale model with great color schemes. All red, Yellow or Black Drakens look cool painted in either colors. Great panel line detail and perfectly fitting parts. It's a $20 model and has aftermarket parts including a mask. The Saab J-37 comes from Special Hobby is a great model. It's twice the size of the Draken and those front canards just make it look like no other jet. I built the recon version of the Saab J-37 which is the SA-37. Both are 1/72nd scale and both kits have great engraved panel lines .

old_marine ; Yup, it's the most brutal jet-engine sound I've ever heard. In 98 I got off a passenger jet in an airport in southern Sweden, at the tarmac. About 150m away 2 Viggens took off at the same time and the ground shook. It's got a peculiar raw, thunderlike sound, it's beautiful.

90000 hp with the afterburner on. It was designed for STOL from bases on the normal road network. Hence, it needed to be able to both take off and land on way shorter strips than normal fighters.

@@azynkron That's the attack and recon version. The fighter had more. I did my militery time on the F17 airfeald in 1989 and the kaptain that instrukted us said that the fighter hade about 120000 hp then he smiled and said "that's the official numbers".
