Hands down, one of the best sounding helicopters, and one of the few with 2 rotor blades. My absolute favourite

Eventually, all AH-1W Super Cobras will be replaced/converted/upgraded into AH-1Z Viper with updated avionics.
@CapStar3624 жыл бұрын
there are only about 80 of the 1W's left even now, even at the time of your comment. AH-1Z Viper Training is rumored to be in full effect and none of the squadrons are training new pilots on the Whiskey's anymore.

and now, less than 2 years after the 1Z makes its debut, its being phased out already for Unmanned Combat Helicopters.

My dad former wolverine Mals29, has a good quote " the wopwopwop of the 2 blade cobras in a high G bank is the sound of the snake beating the air into submission"

Thickness noise, just love the sound of a 2 bladed bird chopping through the air.

if there is one thing that chops and whops louder than a Huey, its a Super Cobra
@CapStar3624 жыл бұрын
the "00" On the Nose denotes he is the Squadron Commander. the special markings confirm its the CO's aircraft, and the High-Viz paint colors, only Commanders get those paint liveries.

@@thesirmaddog8209 no they are not, the AH-1W's power train and rotor system while yes, are from a Huey, they are from a very specific Huey, the B214ST. which no other huey prior has. the 214ST led to the UH-1N, which also led to the AH-1J SeaCobra and the AH-1T Improved SeaCobra. then comes the AH-1W where the original twinpack engine box was changed to the now current GE T700's in individual nacelles, which were additionally used in the Venom UH-1Y, but the power train was kept until the UH-1Y and the AH-1Z's powertrain was developed. no other huey has the same rotor blades as the 1W's except the 214ST. they are wider and shaped differently, and make a distinctively deeper and harder whop. have you ever laid a 1W's rotor blade side by side to any UH1's rotor blade? i haven't laid them personally, but i have seen them side by side, and they are very different. until the UH-1Y came out, the UH1N and prior blades are all flat tipped at the end. the Super Cobra's are rounded off. The 1w"s are thicker and wider, and slightly longer. have a slightly greater root chord pitch angle. im not going to get into whether you are a service member of the Marines ( If you are, Thank you for your service as a child of a Vietnam 0311 Veteran ) , but, i know for a fact, and is easily and factually provable, the Super Cobra's powertrain is unique to a specific design of the Huey and is fundamentally different from the others. I am also good friends with several 1W Pilots, who have discussed this with other people including me, and can verify this above information.

Admin a question. Are the Marine Corps still using the Super Cobra? Has America retired them?

because it is, just larger rotor blades, in fact, if you take the stubby wings, horizontal tail planes and the engines off of the Whiskey, the main rotor blades are just a couple inches shy of the width of the main fuselage. the UH-1N's rotor blades are about 3 inches narrower than those. Huey's and Cobra's have systematically been interchangeable since their inception, at least in the terms of the powertrain and most of the avionics. the AH-1W is a upgrade to the AH-1J and T models which used the UH-1N powertrain and systems. the visual differences to the W from the J and T models are the engines, instead of being a box set housed in a single section, they were separated from each other for survivability in the matter of a catastrophic hit or failure taking out both engines situated directly next to each other, as seen here: www.helis.com/h/ah1j.jpg among those changes, modernized avionics and fire control systems were implemented into the Whiskey model to support the AGM-114 Hellfire and the AIM-9 ATA Missile for self defense from fast movers.

I might be wrong but I think only the Reserve squadrons have Whiskey models. Active duty should be all Viper?
