San Diego is great, I spend 2 weeks in the area every summer with a dog. You did hit 2 of the best beach dog beaches. Cardiff state beach which is a little further up the road from Del Mar is dog friendly and not crowded is my 3rd favorite. Ocean Beach is dog friendly but can get crowded and some surfer let their dogs run while they surf (not the best idea)
