This is one of the highlights from the great movie The Train, a must see movie!
The Train is a 1964 war film directed starring Burt Lancaster, Paul Scofield and Jeanne Moreau. The picture's screenplay is loosely based on the non-fiction book Le front de l'art by Rose Valland, who documented the works of art placed in storage that had been looted by Nazi Germany from museums and private art collections.
Set in August 1944 during World War II, it pits French Resistance-member Paul Labiche against German Colonel Franz von Waldheim, who is attempting to move stolen art masterpieces by train to Germany. Inspiration for the scenes of the train's interception came from the real-life events surrounding train No. 40,044 as it was seized and examined by Lt. Alexandre Rosenberg of the Free French forces outside Paris.

A very nice lady, now quite old and bedridden, grew up in Paris. As a child she witnessed the Nazi takeover of the city. She remembers waking up to the sound of jackboots marching and it still terrifies her. A few months after the takeover her father was able to get the family to a safer place in France. The train that took them out of the city had both passenger cars and armament transport cars. One passenger, then one armaments. The Germans hoped that the passenger cars would protect the train against an Allied attack. It didn't. The train was strafed by Allied aircraft. No one was killed but a small boy about her age was hit by a shell and seriously wounded. What an awful experience. Later, she met an American soldier and moved to the US. They had a very good marriage she told me.

One of my favourite films, Lancaster was in his prime doing so many physical activities, from the obvious train driving to pouring white metal bearings to repair the train. Such an attention to detail in this film, the director should be commended as well. 👍🙂 Ah just read the video description 🙂 Burt Lancaster directed, that explains it.

I saw the squared wingtips and said "That's not a Spit. But it's not a Mustang because the elevators were rounded. What is it?" A little google-fu and yep, you got it: probably a Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk XIIs or similar.

It is a Spitfire Mk IX with clipped wings yep, but I couldn't see a plane with a normal span in that sequence, even when freeze framing it, at around 0:53 in the clip there is a shot of the plane turning and when watched at normal speed it is difficult to tell the wing span type, but on freeze framing it is clearly a clipped wing variant....I think it is the same plane throughout the sequence, what time in the sequence can you see a normal span and I'll have a look again and see If I can see what you are seeing! I'm not convinced though.

In a later scene Burt Lancaster is shot in the lower leg crossing a footbridge fleeing from a train he has just abandoned - soon before he had injured the leg playing golf, so the script had to be rewritten to accommodate his impaired running ability.

I love how they apply the brakes three or four times, just to make sure they are really on. There is quite a lot of actual footage of missions like this and it's not that much different except they tend to strafe more than just fly behind the locomotive. That way they can walk their bullets into the target easier. Also; the pilots in the real missions are *much* better at hitting stuff . Plot armour, I guess :-)
@am5p8
@am5p8 3 ай бұрын
More than likely he is applying the brakes harder and harder. There is a range to applying a train brake. Speaking from experience as a train driver.
@mkvv5687

@@am5p8 Is there an over-heating problem? Muscle-fade? Also, it seemed that it was put into reverse...I'm not sure. But that doesn't seem useful as I would expect it to break traction.
@am5p8
@am5p8 2 ай бұрын
@@mkvv5687 The only time overheating is a problem is on a long downhill grade. I don't quite understand the reference to muscle fade. Air brakes on a train work by taking air out of the train line ( brake pipe). There are measures to this up to the point where the brakes are on as hard as they can be and can't be put on any harder.

The great film has baffled my mind-who owns a work of art? Is it a national treasure, or does it belong to those who can appreciate it? Should a connoisseur of art steal, or rather, rob, a work of art from others just to bring it into his possession? This film brings several contradictory ideas into conflict with each other, and as an Indian and a victim of colonial robbery, looting, and torture under the European Christian supremacists, I see it through a different lens.

Great movie and encourage everyone to watch it who wasn't. A real attack would be from a much steeper angle and not "march" the shots up to the locomotive. But that would not be very cinematic-ally interesting.
