I will never forget the first time I ever met a bunch of these amazing dudes: Gerald Albright, Norman Brown, Richard Elliott, Joe Butler, Tim Bowman. It was "Summer Storm" in Phoenix. I cant explain the feeling. Man, it was amazing just hanging around these guys. Then met some of them again at Zuzu in Scottsdale that same evening. That just crowned the whole event. I will never forget that day. Amazing, amazing

I don't see how Eric moves so much and lifts his fingers so far up off the keys and still plays so articulate, fast, and clean. Hey, whatever. It's workin'!!!

The second of the two soloists has a lot of Jazz vocabulary in his hands.Gerald is able to tell his story in a logical, coherent and progressive manner.Eric is definitely a student of Gerald who is determined to show the former (Eric) that he (Gerald) is the boss, the director and professor of this session. Eric appears to be anxious, hoping to prove a point. The first soloist is cool, calm and collective, wanting to play by the pre-planned rules. Together, an excellent performance .

The Crusader does a nice take of this with Wilton Felder Sitting in the tenor saxophone chair.

Excellent synopsis...I witnessed the very same tendencies while observing each of the solos. Gerald is a graceful teacher and very patient in his storyline...clear and concise.

+Rod Allen Thanks, Rod. Actually, I have Wilton Felder's great performance of it. Do you recall David Sanborn's take on it? What a simply beautiful tune!
@saxappeal749 жыл бұрын
of course! While I do love David Sanborn's version I, being a tenor sax player, prefer the original with Wilton.
You all talk about the 4 saxophonists, all are great of course.. but the one leading the show is the bass who managed to make it better than the original.. unbelievable!

@stephensmelley64686 жыл бұрын
Actually it was originally done by Bob James and David Sanborn on the iconic Double Visions project. Marcus Miller wrote the tune and later produced the Crusaders project healing the wounds where they did a cover. Their version is incredible too! Marcus Miller played on both versions.

Nobody knows what that is but it’s the best carvin bass ever made that was discontinued after only two years. I have one and recognized the look and sound immediately. They hit a home run with that bass and you don’t see too many around. The only problem was they made it with separate volume controls for each pickup and I had it modified to have a blend knob and a master volume, much better solution in my opinion.

The guy with the glasses has the closest sound to Mr. Sanborn. I love the variations on this song though. David would be proud. Does anyone know what the word Maputo means? It sounds like a Latin swear word, if I'm honest.
@jeanclaudebossonney75209 жыл бұрын
+supercooled Maputo is the capital of the state of Mozambique. As far as I remember, the song has been written by Marcus Miller. In addition to David Sanborn version, there is another one by the Crusaders, with the late Wilton Felder (RIP) on tenor sax

It feels like everybody was trying show off to the others on stage, like they each had something to prove. It’s too bad, because getting four of these guys on the same stage is tough to do, and it could have been a great musical experience for performers and the audience. Instead it turned into a non-musical pissing contest of who could play highest, fastest, and pull off the most licks before their solo was up. Such a shame.
