AITA for refusing to let my parents rename me?
My (15M) parents gave my sister (16F), brother (13M) and me nature names and more specifically. Water nature names. My sister is Ocean, I'm Cove and my brother is River. arents rename me?

I actually really like the name Cove, it has a nice ring to it. River is already a guy's name and it's easy to get used to. The strangest one is Ocean, where I feel like Oceana or something like that would be easier, but it's still not super outrageous.

So weird that they want to change the names but won’t let the kids choose them. My husband has a friend who was given an Indian name (super white & no connection to India, his parents are just super hippies from the 70s & they did that with all their kids). They let him pick his own name when he started school. A 5 year old picked a name that he was comfortable with & liked. If a 5 year old could do it, I’m sure a teenager could handle the responsibility of naming themselves.

Cove is odd but it honestly is the best one. Ocean is just... did you even TRY? River is a name already in use so.. fine. It gets a pass, even if it's basic too... but OCEAN? What's wrong with Delta? Bay? Reef?? Fen?? I don't know. "Ocean"... Might as well just name your kid "water" at that point.

Actually, your names are awesome! They're not overly outrageous like some Hollywood stars would name their kids. Your parents are not only the ones being disrespectful, but they are also the biggest AH for forcing and gaslighting you and your siblings. NTA. It’s ultimately up to OP amd his siblings if they want to change their names and the parents have no right to force that sort of change on them or pressure them into doing it. Besides, none of those names are as terrible as they’re being made out to be. Uncommon names like Ocean and Cove are becoming quite popular nowadays and they aren’t insanely weird like what Elon Musk named his kid, and River is probably the most normal and common sounding one out of all of them.

Weird parents .. I do understand that the parents fear that their names will impact negatively in their adult lives but the millennial / genz generations are fine with these names. Millennial generations will be in top positions in the workforce when op and siblings are in their 20s .. I’m 42 and if I was the one deciding on which kid gets into the college I work for , i would not bypass these three names because it’s easy to pronounce and it’s memorable , there will be tons of James , tons of johns , tons of the same names .. the only people who comment on names are people who are old and judgemental . There are ridiculous names like apple , north , blu ivy , sir , Penelope , Chicago .. the name Elizabeth reminds me of colonisation and the name Charles makes me think of British ugly king charles ( yuk) .. river and cove gives me a calming visual .. it’s good names especially cove

I have an uncommon name and I hated it when I was a kid. I would cringe every time someone asked for my name. My mom also said she regretted it for my sake, because she didn’t think people would be so weird about it when she named me. It’s not a particularly weird name, but a famous radio host in my country had the same name, and almost every time someone asked, they would go “haha, just like [name] on the radio.” I moved to another country when I was older, and here the name is incredibly uncommon, but most people think it’s a nice name, so I feel much better about it, lol.

The online hate would surely be directed towards the parents who chose the unusual name, not the kid who has it. That's always how I've seen that playing out in practice. I honestly don't think the *kids* have anything to fear, if they've already avoided bullying at school then there's not likely to be any massive social consequences that fall on THEM, going forward, so the parents realistically have nothing to fear on their behalf either. I think what's actually happening is the parents have realised that *they* would be the targets of any judgement for the kids' names, and they want the kids to facilitate their parents avoiding the consequences of their choices, even if it now inconveniences the kids themselves even further. The parents are dressing up selfish self-interest in a facade of concern, by misrepresenting who'd be most likely to face negative consequences in future.

River is already pretty common so I don't see an issue with it. Cove is not that common but I think it's very cool. I'd say Ocean is the most out there, but it's still not that outrageous (in comparison to other out there names at least) and if the person assigned to it likes it, what's the problem?

I have an “unusual name” (not really native, but also not unnative), I love my name. I will admit, I once thought of changing my name, but after a few recommendations (not basic ones) it was a hard no. I’m glad my name is mine, although.. I do get called things that aren’t my name at all (ex: micheal, being called mitchy) , but I enjoy that to sometimes. (Also, my name isn’t micheal, I’m not a dude..).

The parents should have thought about their children’s future when naming their children, not try to pin it on them now. So weird. Could’ve been so much easier if they named the children with a water based name as middle name. E.g. Elizabeth Ocean, James River, Michael Cove. Then your kid has a normal name for future employment etc, AND you can still nickname them the water names they wanted so badly. NTA. But those names aren’t too bad, anyways. And you get used to any name. Why change it now?

Not the booty hole. Your name is yours and only you have the right to change it. I know people say your name will make things difficult because it's unique, but there's another side to that coin; you're going to be a LOT less likely to be targeted with identity theft. Trying to steal your identity with such a unique name would be like stealing a van painted to look like the Mystery Machine and expecting not to get found quickly.

I named my kid after a Star Trek character so I know how annoying not to be able to find your name on any of the school supplies and backpacks and whatnot is in the end my kid loves the name that I gave her and it is relatively unique so it is what it is. your parents can't just pop up after X number of years and say hey we want to change your names. that is not how this works.
