Food for thought: the couple got angry that the picture was being used to report a health code violation. If it was a service dog, the couple would probably explained what the dog is and why its there instead of being rash and wanting to start a fight. Also if the owner didnt kick them out, then the couple is probably super entitled (eg; being how they behaved to op) and demanded or been one of those ppl that go “well i could do it last time”

That's simply not true in the USA. Most restaurants don't allow dogs. The issue being that its illegal in the USA to force someone to prove their dog is a service dog. And if they don't want to and you kick them out, then they can sue for violating their disabilities. However if the dog is not a real service dog then the owner will be fined if they take it to court. But there is zero way to know if a dog is service or not. Like there is no tags they have to wear which can be scanned, and owners don't have to carry paperwork. How would anyone know but the owners.

I’m kinda split here. I feel like yes, you did violate their privacy by taking their photo and maybe you should’ve talked to them first. But the guy didn’t need to try and fight you. It also depends if the restaurant allows dogs in the restaurant.

@@parrotlover8547 They did not say what country. Also the issue is its illegal to force someone to prove their animal is for service in the USA. The only way to know is if you get sued by them, and then of course in court they would have to prove the restaurant violated their disability. So then and only then would they need to prove the dog was a service dog for a physical assistance need.

And as a customer you have every right to take your business somewhere else. Sooner or later you’ll find someone who doesn’t tolerate you either and then what will you do.. I personally feel YTA! Of course if you have a service dog you're allowed to have your animal with you. Butt service dogs are not allowed up on furniture they're supposed to be at your feet even when you are on the plane the animal has to be at the feet unless the person buys a ticket for the dog service animals are not allowed in your shopping carts none of that they're supposed to be walking on the leash at your feet they shouldn't be on any kind of furniture in any restaurant again they should be laying down at your feet. Sorry there's no punctuation. That depends on what country you are in. If this wasn't the US, it could be illegal. And why not just talk to an employee and/or the dog owners? Why the whole cloak and dagger bs? How do you think reporting a health code violation works? Because it's been happening since long before cell phones with cameras. OP didn't need to take a picture to report what he saw.

Both. You don't suck for having some concerns, (specifically the dog being on the furniture) but you also shouldn't be too quick to think the restaurant doesn't know about the dog. (If service animals are trained to act like that then please let me know, since I cannot ever recall a service dog being allowed to do such things)

Unless the owners kick them out there is no reason to go that far. One maybe it’s allowed to have pets there and your allergic people can move or it’s a service animal that is there to help someone so maybe next time just speak to an employee there and figure out the problem and find a good solution

Yta. As someone on the spectrum who has a dog that looks like an xl bully. I've had people take my photo all the time and it's horrendous. I don't like being around people anyway so for strangers to have me on their phone is a complete violation. My dog is well behaved and always on a leash. He's never breaking rules. Neither am I. So yeh, yes.

There’s a difference between being an asshole and committing a crime, and yeah, it’s a dick move to take pictures of people in public without consent if they’re not doing anything to bother you, and no, having a dog in your possession isn’t bothering anyone unless it bites someone. I’m also on the spectrum and if anyone took random pictures of me it would make me feel so uncomfortable, I wouldn’t know what they’re doing with those pictures and it would probably make me panic.

Autism service dogs *are* legit service dogs. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Some autism service dogs redirect people who could otherwise wander off into a dangerous area. Some of them calm people down when they have meltdowns. I wouldn’t expect you to know this, but some people resort to self-harming behaviors during a meltdown. Therefore, autistic people *do* have medical needs which require a service dog. I suggest you educate yourself before trying to invalidate someone’s assistive device.

No if you have allergies and you are out in public you shouldn’t expect everyone else to change their behaviour on the off chance you might eat at that restaurant fair enough if you would rather know you’re likely to be exposed to that allergen or trying to stay away from something likely to cause a reaction but if nobody’s doing anything wrong then definitely not (like how it seems the dog owners were minding their own business and nobody had a problem) sometimes the masses shouldn’t be expected to change for the minority

I feel conflicted here, it could have been a service dog and OP probably should have just raised concerns with an employee or manager and let them handle it instead but idk if OP’s an asshole for this, they seem genuinely concerned for the health of others and they have people who would be impacted by actions like this so their actions make sense. As well as I feel like there’s this understanding when your in public that like you aren’t in a private place, if your doing something weird, loud or annoying people are gonna take a pic. Even if your just existing people might take a pic since your in PUBLIC. That guy definitely shouldn’t have tried to fight OP and I don’t think they were violating their privacy when they are out in public, if you do something in the public the public is gonna know and see it. Now if OP like berated them or like got ahold of their phones and went through them that’s different. Your phone even in public is considered private, but sitting with your dog at the table at your local chipotle is pretty much volunteering yourself to be seen. You can’t really complain about people seeing your post on like twitter or some shit since you volunteered that post to the world if that makes sense?

A bit difficult to lean towards NTA/YTA. Does it have a service/emotional service vest on it? Are the couple being extra or have the dog for medical needs? If the couple just have the dog, didn't take the dog outside, and felt extra, then NTA. If the couple has the dog like a service/emotional support animal and the restaurant is fine, then YTA. To me, it sounds like OP left details out.
