Yeah, the headphone volume situation is just bonkers. Even worse on AD-F640 - no control of any kind. I didn't realise when I bought it back in the day as my first bit of Hifi and had to live with permanently too loud music (or low record level) until I added a potentiometer mod on the back.

I had a 990 undoubtedly the best tape recorder I ever used. Dolby C on a metal tape would rival a CD or LP ... was annoying however because the digital display quit ... very expensive repair... the machine tended to run hot compared to the different Technics and Sony decks that I've had over the years...

I’ve managed to get my hands on an unopened one, still in its box. Is that super rare? Currently researching about these cool things. Anyone got any info?

Wick point all of this piano Aiwa is power supply. Is getting very hot and marking capacitors became dried very quickly, which cause changes in distribution voltage nominals, which lead to incorrect circuits working or even to be damaged. Adding additional heat sink and recap power circuit could solve this problem and prolong life this beautiful machines! Currently restoring Aiwa AD f990.

@@artsimannisto5659 i have fixed numbers of them. No matter how they look like, problem is in ESR. Capacitors drying, make some consideration they are all very close to transstor's heat radiators, ESR growing up changing EMF of power supply (going up) wich going to put circuits over voltage. It is like time bomb, could work many years and suddenly stop. Just run your desk for 10 min and touch heatsinks of power supply and look inside how many small capacitors nearby. Usually I recap power supply and increasing heat sinks in the size, I have them worm instead hot. Just bear in your mind if you burn out IC it is going to be very hard to find them for replacement! It is just info, but is not necessarily to go for some actions, be careful and don't use it for too long period of time.
