Aiwa HS-F07 CassetteBoy repair, Back To The Future Marty McFly (fixed audio)

In this video I repair the Aiwa Cassette player model featured in Back To The Future. I clean the old belt, replace with a new belt, fix the non-functioning auto-reverse and adjust playback speed.

I bought the cheapest non-functioning one from eBay, and it came all the way from Japan, so it is a JDM model. The video help me a lot getting the back panel open and the belt layout. The belt had turned into molten goo, yuck but the metal pulleys are not too corroded with green crap, so it is short job. On playback, the auto reverse works properly but the audio channel switching while engaging the auto reverse is initially not working properly, the audio is partially working (nothing to do with Volume POT meter) eventually it started working properly after engaging the auto reverse a few times, but I got to find that switch and lubricate it.

Very helpful! Mine also had the dislocated auto-reverse spring & belt turned to goop. My tip/warning for everyone else: I *highly* recommend powering these with batteries. A chip ran very hot with my power adapter (despite correct voltage & polarity). I presume the circuit doesn't 'know' how to limit current. The same chip went from burning hot to room temperature with batteries. Cheers!

Here's a little work around trick for motor speed adjustment in the absents of a test tape and guitar tuner. Take a reliable commercially recorded cassette with a common music track, then find a trusted digital copy of that same track in your collection or from a stream like KZbin. Attempt to start the tape and digital copy at the same time. Sync them by a combination of very momentarily pausing the digital track and/or briefly interrupting the tape flywheel with your finger to bring them together. Then listen for rush or drag and adjust as needed. You may have to repeat the track a few times depending on how well you make the adjustment and your level of perfection. I successfully used this process on my vintage TEAC component cassette recorder.

I'm so lucky, i bought aiwa hs px10 for 5$ at drift store. It sounds good after changing belt.

At least this Aiwa is easier to service compared to most of their stuff because most of them need to be desoldered to access the gears and belts.

They are not easy to fix. I had one and sold it, because it never worked as I expected. Of course it will get its basic functions if you change the belt and clean it, but the pinch rollers need to be replaced and even after that the Capstans have too much space I guess… when I moved mine around the Azimuth changed the whole time and the music faded. It depends on the tape you use… sometimes it got better, sometimes it got worse but it even can damage the tape. It's a big problem with many Walkmans. You can try to make them tighter with another distance ring. I couldn't find one that fitted perfect. The HS F07/P07 was almost the TOTL Model back in 85. There was only one which was better: The HS P08. That one had remotable Full Logic Control. But if the HS F07 works as it should, it sounds great. Cassettes can sound very good. The HS F07 has a relatively high W&F, 0,3% WRMS but a good Anti Rolling.

A twist drill the diameter of the thread of the screw can be used to drill off the screw head. You must use a LEFT (counterclockwise) cutting drill, just slightly smaller diameter than the thread. Ken p.

whatfor the oil on the capstan weels and ON the motor and not unter ?!

After almost 40 years, any point of friction that had any old lubricant needs new oil whether there is a motor or not. If it needs to move freely it should have fresh lubricant.

Get a tape with 1khz tone.put a dmm that measures frequency on phone output and look for 1000 Hz or there abouts
