It's so amazing seeing you guys caring about these little cubes are much I do:) To learn more about the AI in the video, keep reading! These agents we're quite tricky to train. Despite the task being simple, we actually had to do a good amount of reward shaping in order to get interesting behavior. The agents are punished for dying, being in the air (to discourage spam jumping, which was the bane of my existence for a while), the ball being on the agents side, the ball not being held and being close to the ball while the ball is lethal. The agents are also rewarded for hitting the opponent with a throw, picking up the ball for the first time (otherwise they would just push the ball back and forth), throwing the ball while in the air (to get the speed boost) and being close to the ball while it's ready to be picked up. It was a massive challenge training the agents in the final room, largely due to the fact that it seemed as though no matter what we did, the Kai's would just spam jump when there were more than a couple balls on their side, finally Andrew had the great realization the reason for that is to try to avoid the friendly fire that happens when you have 10 agents on one side lol, so we disabled friendly fire on the final battle and tried resuming the training considering we already had 50m steps trained, the behavior wasn't perfect but it looked pretty cool and we've already kept you guys waiting for a video for too long we decided to use it! I hope it meets your guys standards! Oooo cooperation, nice I think it'd be interesting to have a couple more bots, one training specifically against Albert, one specifically against Kai, but Albert and Kai have to deal with all of them, *including* themselves *and* the type that never saw them, just to give them a broader variety of strategies to train against and hopefully make both Albert and Kai more robust I also think it'd make sense to keep friendly fire but solve team playing a different way. Team playing is really difficult but I think when they did those Dota 2 AIs, they had specific strategies for that. Some sort of goal that started out strong but got reduced over time iirc.

Unfortunately while your idea is good, it requires some really high level strategies that I'm not sure AI warehouse has the knowledge base for, as it requires specific custom techniques still being pioneered. And having the bot play against another bot (maybe itself or a bot besides it's opponent) would definitely help, but having Albert and Kai on the same team is just not relevant or helpful enough to warent it. In the end with a lot of ai training, it comes down to resource management (PC GPU, CPU) versus time, and the ability to code aforementioned idea.

Honestly these videos do a good job showcasing one of the weaknesses of deep reinforcement learning. The potential to overlearn, or to learn how to only do the specific task without retaining any general ability. The AIs more or less need a full retrain between the first couple scenarios. In reality the lower neuron count doesnt make kai "stupider" but just simpler, which actually allows him to learn and develop "faster" (relative to albert), just less complex and accurate results, however, due to the margins of error, kais simple brain is still plenty complex enough for the accuracy needed in dodgeball.

Really cool video! I think adding a function where Albert and Kai change color during their intent to catch may have been helpful to analyze their behavior a little deeper, as well as understand why some hits count and some don't!
