I was born in Norwich and my Mother’s side of family, staunch Norfolk. As kids I spent fabulous school summer holidays with Grandparents, who lived in Cromer. Travelled this route many times too, in the very late 1970s. A football mad young capital canary....fantastic times and memories! Class 47 locos and Mk 2 coaches. My first ever BR cheese and tomato sandwiches from buffet car .....hooked for life........cheese n tomato 🍅. Interesting the front of Norwich Station......was formerly named Thorpe Station. Great video and channel. Have subscribed. Thank you Adam 👍👋☕️☕️ Hugh.

The first electrification between Liverpool St and Shenfield was actually at 1500v DC, completed in 1949! And later extended to Chelmsford and South End in 1956. The Class AM6 and AM7 (later class 306 and 307) EMUs were built for these services. Conversion to AC power commence in 1960, and extension of the wires to Colchester, Clacton and Walton, and the West Anglia line to Bishops Stortford commenced, for which class 305, 308 and 309 EMUs were built. The latter being the first 100mph capable units. Strangely, after long careers on the GE routes, both class 307 and 308 later found work on the West Yorkshire PTE electrified lines, while some 305s and 309s lived out their final days on local services out of Manchester. It looks set that some 90s may go that way too for use on services out of Blackpool!

Your point about the importance of the comfort of train travel is a very valid one. There does seem to be a sacrifice on seat comfort with every "upgrade". From Virgin's MkIII to Pendolinos, the Metropolitan A to S and, my biggest bugbear, the swap of the 321 for 350 (with the solid green seats) on London Midland. I only ever had to ride as far as Tring on those... Can't imagine how I might have ached if I had to ride all the way to Lime Street on one.

Oh, absolutely agreed. The Class 800s on GWR are my biggest bugbear - I cannot imagine taking a trip from London to Penzance aboard one of those the whole way!

Towards the end, when some had already been withdrawn, EMUs would frequent the route (though a few timetables ones ran). It also meant a mismatch of coaches from various sets, hence your declassified First Class one.

Not all of it, thankfully - the 15 locomotives are as far as I know all still working, two with LSL (repainted into retro InterCity Swallow livery!) and the remaining 13 are now with Freightliner. Some of the coaches and DVTs have been saved too, I know the Mid-Norfolk Railway have picked up a complete rake of coaches. :)

@@HeyItsAJOmega yes, I've seen the swallow 90s, very nostalgic, I remember both the class 90s and 91 introduced back late 80s. Used to live in sleepy grimsby, but now live near slough on the great western line, so gone from hsts to class 800s last few years

Great video! The Great Eastern Main Line was always a bit of a Cinderella line, can't remember if it also had the old ex Scotrail DVT's? All good times. I think you put your finger on things when you bemoaned the lack of 'soul' and it being a nice place to travel. The same thing could be said of the IC125's and their MK3 coaches. A lovely place to be. I agree that progress is good, but the replacement Stadler units and all other modern trains have lost any soul. The Azumas on ECML look amazing; however they are terrible to travel in. Cramped, overly bright lighting and a horribly hard suspension. Us public are not immune from change, only it would have been lovely to have something compatible to travel in. Now, I travel by car because my car is comfortable and it doesn't charge me a fortune to get from A to B.

@HeyItsAJOmega4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I believe the 90s were suffering from lots of miles on the WCML at that point? And blimey that sounds pretty dramatic xD
@JRJUK4 жыл бұрын
At least 2 of the 86s caught fire around the time of their withdrawal
@soundseeker634 жыл бұрын
That because the 86s had become run down from poor maintenance, as their replacement was immanent by that time, and they were pushing 40 years old too! Under normal circumstances 86s are very reliable locos....Freightliner fleet is still going at 55 years old, as are some examples in Hungary and Bulgaria. Virgin allowed the 90s to become run down too on the run up to replacing them with Pendolinos, so in the beginning you had one fleet of locos in poor condition replacing another. The 90s have since become a reliable fleet with proper maintenance and upkeep.

If only Class 90 Mk3s would of stop at Shenfield. Hopefully Class 745/0 might stop at Shenfield and could also stop at Witham & Marks Tey. Whilst Class 321 and Class 360 trains operating to Clacton-on-Sea, Colchester, Colchester Town, Ipswich, Harwich Town and Walton-on-the-Naze do stop at Shenfield, Ingatestone, Hatfield Peveral, Witham, Kelvedon and Marks Tey and Braintree trains also stop at Ingatestone and Hatfield Peveral. And some also do stop at Romford including Southend Victoria trains but not Southminster trains. But I will be missing the Class 90 Mk3s. #FarewellClass90. Also the Class 321, Class 317 and Class 360 trains are to be replaced by the Class 720 Aventras which will be working on the Great Eastern and West Anglia services as well branch lines (including Crouch Valley Line, Mayflower Line, Sunshine Lines and Hertford East Line). And Class 379 to be replaced by Class 745/1 for the Stansted Express service which we are not sure when it will be in service from. As Class 379 could be cascaded to Gautrain and Class 360 cascaded to East Midlands Railway.
