I guess that I'm guilty of puerile simplicity. My first fantasy novels were the Dragonlance Chronicles. There is Paladine, and there is Takhisis. Water is wet, the sun is hot, Paladine is impossibly good, and Takhisis is impossibly evil. It made sense to my young mind. As I've grown, read more from many more sources, played dungeons and dragons, immersed myself in the exquisite pleasure of Krynnish and Forgotten Realms draconic lore - I can't say that I've evolved with the content. Water is wet, the sun is hot, Paladine/Bahamut is impossibly good, and Takhisis/Tiamat is impossibly evil. It's limiting, but it's soothing. I've only ever enjoyed playing good-aligned characters; thus, I'm team Platinum for life! Thank you, AJ Pickett - this is a GORGEOUS exploration into those OTHER draconic deities. 100/100. Brilliant.

Our party had to seek out Bahumat for aid in stopping Tiamat's DRAGON FLIGHT (portals open up to the 9 hells & chromatic dragons plus Tiamat's avatar pour out) from taking PLACE in our game's world. We received a riddle of "seek him behind the North wind". We're like OK that really helps, how do you go behind the North Wind?. After some time & a few divination spells we discovered a tavern in our homebrew's capital called "The North Wind"... Bahumat was chill in the back. DM got a real kick out of that. 😅😅😅😅

I love Dragons. They are my favorite fantasy creature. And since so many fantasy books, movies, and games inspired me to write my own Fantasy material. I always saw Dragons as beings that don't need Gods, because they are so immensely powerful and wise throughout the ages. In how I see Dragons is the older a Dragon gets the more one with the primordial forces of the cosmos they become with. Not only do they get bigger with age, but the more powerful the older they get as well, and even the more omniscient they become because they are made out of the fundamental forces of the cosmos. So if a Dragon is billions of years old they are much larger than a planet and can challenge and kill even a God.
@oathlords79894 жыл бұрын
In Oathlords the dragons are minions of the Erðfaðir. They come from the earth and hoard metals because their scales transmute into an alloy based on what they collect. So of course the greatest is the mithril dragon... whose rivals are those of iron and bronze... but there are also more numerous lesser drakes of silver, gold, copper, etc. They spread wings and climb to peaks because, like humans, they're striving to harness the power of the ether... the opposite of earth... which is unnatural and breaks the world. So I like seeing them as elemental and semi-divine beings as well... with a destructively selfish purpose.

This will help in my current game where I got the rare and coveted opportunity to reach 17th level as a wizard and promptly used true polymorph to become an adult gold dragon. So, question for AJ and the great community here: How can I, as a player, effectively role play being a dragon? I’ve already started work excavating a lair near a city I like, started calculating how much gold is needed for a comfortable bed, and hired a bard to start spreading tales of my exploits. Any more ideas?

@AJ Pickett All these negative comments below are a little disheartening! It sounds like people are upset because the D&D lore has expanded so much beyond the original, which is inevitable for any popular cultural phenomenon. And sometimes people take that expansion a little too far or err a bit on the ridiculous side. There are many examples of this: Lovecraft, Star Wars (and how Disney defiled it), Star Trek (and how JJ Abrams and the current spin-offs have defiled it), etc. That's certainly not your doing. You're giving us the complete history of the lore -- the good, the bad and the ugly. And you do a damn fine job in your videos too. Your channel is my favorite among the channels with D&D content. Please don't be disheartened by the negative comments from disenfranchised D&D fans. You're doing a great job, and I hope you keep it up. Have a good one, AJ!

@draxthemsklonst4 жыл бұрын
@@necro6767676 Agreed on the Ur Dragon just being another name for Asgorath/Io. The phlogiston (Blind Eternities in MtG) is still inhospitable to planeswalkers that lurk there for any length of time. They all pass through it quickly, like a teleportation of sorts. Venser had to make a special type of globes that could allow an extended journey through the Blind Eternities. Otherwise, per canon, only beings like the eldrazi can just hang out there, without using some sort of special ability, spell, item, vehicle...something. Obviously, there are rules so there must be exceptions of some sort (like Venser's orbs or a ship). Your game, your rules...I'm just saying what the official lore states.

I'm continually disappointed at how great beings don't have unique spells, weapons, defensive items and powers. A "fireball" or breath weapon of a unique greater power should be incredibly destructive and almost a guaranteed kill if it's a direct hit without creative and specific defenses.

I find it interesting that nonhumans each have single pantheons, while humans have multiple. Of course, the real-world explanation ('Doylist') is that, historically, we have a great many human pantheons to use as inspiration for the gods of fantasy humans, while nonhuman deities must be created from whole cloth, a decidedly more difficult task. (Occasionally, they can be adapted from real-world beliefs, e.g. Surtur, Thrym, and Tiamat.) Does anyone have a good in-universe ('Watsonian') explanation?

Had a campaign once where Dragons were the Supreme power in the world bcz the Gods had went to war. Tiamat discovered she could harvest "divine essence" from other Dieties & become stronger. She started knocking off Draconic God's, to combat her the Good aligned draconic God's offered their power to Bahamut making them both effectively the strongest God's in existence. Good gods lined up with Bahamut, evil with Tiamat & big war pops off. World splits in two, Tiamat is banished & dragons vanish from the world. Story compounded over 2 campaigns. 1 campaign centered around "The World Pillars" two massive pillars that Bahamut had created to hold the two world halves together & apart. The Cult of Tiamat were trying to destroy the pillars, bring the world's back together & return Tiamat to the material plane. The 1st campaign ended with the pillars falling, the second ended with the players going DEEP underground to discover a giant opening that dropped into the sky. It was the top of the World Pillars. Pillars broke, world's collided, realities collapsed & everything coalesce into one prime reality. The Blood War, the Gith & Flayer War etc, every conflict known spilt onto this new singular realm while the War of the God's raged. Their characters were brought before an aspect of Bahamut, told they'd been chosen & they had to pick between their two characters from both campaigns on who would live, the other "sacrificing" themselves to empower the surviving. 3rd campaign was their characters tasked with gathering Divine Essence, become God's & to help Bahamut challenge Tiamat for the final time. In the end Bahamut split his essence between the party, they became God's, fought Tiamat & then reshaped reality back to normal before becoming the New God's of that reality. We all sat down & created the new world together that we still play in to this day. Took like 3yrs but it was worth it in the end. It was amazing. For anybody wondering the God's the characters became were: Tikleberry Coppecog (Tik) - Gnomish God of Thieves & Arcane Tricksters Lia - Water Genasi Goddess of Magic & Hope Ronyn - Centaur Goddess of Nature & The Hunt Dovah - Aasimar turned God of Batttle & Protection Oyama Sin Laden - Tiefling God of Lies & Deception

One of the ways I know I love your channel is because just listening to you gives me exciting new ideas for my campaign. As always thank you AJ - and yes, please do Eberron! If you could find time during your remaster to cover Steel Dragons I would really appreciate it too; they're one the most underutilized and underappreciated dragons and I would love to hear what you dig up!

Tiamat is not only the final boss of the _Tyranny of Dragons_ storyline, but can also play a major role in the _Descent Into Avernus_ adventure. INCOMING SPOILERS. If I were to ever run this adventure, I'd have an encounter with Tiamat as they ride across Avernus in their infernal war machines, since she has essentially free reign of the layer. She would swoop down and accost the adventurers, demanding that they do something to amuse her, because she is bored. If they succeed at a Perform check of some kind, she lets them go. If they beat the DC by 5 or more (or roll a natural 20), she is especially pleased, and offers to do them a favor somewhere down the line if it suits her. If they fail the check, Tiamat is displeased, but decides that she has better things to do, and flies off in a huff. Interestingly, if they roll a natural 1 on the check, the performance goes so badly that Tiamat starts laughing uncontrollably, and ends up feeling the same way as if they had beat the Perform check DC by 5+ or rolled a natural 20. This would potentially come into play later, when the PCs need to acquire some of Tiamat's blood for a polymorphed empyrean (who happens to be the son of the fire giant god Surtur) to spill. The source, the PCs may have been told, is a reliquary held by an evil dragonborn paladin of Tiamat called Arkhan the Cruel, who somehow got his hands on nothing less than the _Hand of Vecna_ . While the empyrean gave the PCs an _orb of dragonkind_ to offer as trade for the reliquary, Arkhan wants something more than the orb - the life of a celestial creature...which, in a party with a good cleric or paladin, would be considered an evil act and immediately make them lose their class abilities. However, if the PCs greatly amused Tiamat, she butts in by suddenly taking over Arkhan and speaking through him. She agrees to exchange the _orb_ for the reliquary.

So if you say goodbye to Tiamat and Bahamut, get on a spelljamer, fly to Krynnspace, and say hello to Takhisis and Paladine . . . Do they remember you from when you just said goodbye to them under different names?

@@AJPickett That makes the Dragonlance Age of Mortals, where Takhisis is permanently destroyed and Paladine permanently locked in a low-power avatar form, a bit strange. Takhisis lived in the abyss and was NE in Dragonlance, and I'm pretty sure Krynn shares the same outer planes right? Like someone who goes from Krynn to the Nine Hells or from Toril to the Nine Hells, is it the same nine Hells? Does the Krynn guy just not see Tiamat there because his version of her died? I'm gonna have to hash all this out for something I'm writing . . .
@Ariemius4 жыл бұрын
@@Tovish1988 OK so here's my two cents. AJ can correct me as needed. Ok so starting with seeing a god in the Outer Planes. They would probably manifest as their aspect you are most familiar with for the ease of the mortal. They are much more powerful in the outer planes, (my guess is the sum total of all their aspects) but the aspects on each crystal sphere have individual powers and restrictions based on local factors. They are inherently confusing as multiversal beings to be honest, because of things like this. They can be losing a fight on one world and winning a fight elsewhere and they do this across the infinite worlds of the prime material. Edit because i forgot a question. They all share the same outer planes. Except for I believe the feywild and shadowfell as those are reflections of the prime instead of being true outer planes.
@AJPickett4 жыл бұрын
@@Tovish1988 Think of the Prime material worlds as "The desert of the real" and the outer planes as the 'Matrix', including the Nine Hells. When going to the outer planes, a mortal is plugging into the matrix and experiencing a reality created from the thoughts and beliefs of all living beings. When the powers (Programs) of the outer planes manifest (project) into the Prime Material (The Real) they are drawing heavily on the belief of the living beings of that local zone of the Prime.
@AJPickett4 жыл бұрын
@@Ariemius Correct, they all share the same outer planes (these are collective projections into the astral plane, one step higher into a spectrum of locations based on the ethical and behavioral types of living beings). The Shadowfel and Feywild are Parallel dimensions that bridge this gap in another way. They feywild is more like an outer plane that connects to fairy tales and thus, also connects to planes with similar mythical figures. The shadowfel is a plane of horror and hopelessness, it has a strong association with entropy, undeath and the negative plane, as well as planes like Hades and Pandemonium and the Abyss, so both those parallel planes exist alongside specific prime material worlds, and act a bit like a transitive plane as well.

To answer your question. Lendys was known as the God of Harsh justice. Lendys' brand of justice only dictated dragonkind so evil dragons could still be evil and unless they committed an egregious crime against dragonkind itself Lendys would turn a blind eye "As arbiter of dragonkind, Lendys served as judge, jury, and executioner. When a dragon committed an injustice against all dragons, Lendys or one of his great wyrm followers went to dispatch appropriate justice."
