there is a sub-type 'half-dragon' in my world, because there are a lot of similar ones. For example there is a race (or monster) of feline half-dragons like those "dragon-guard-dogs" in Volo's Guide, but with big cats (lions, tigers, leopards, etc).

Well, this video has certainly validated the concerns I had with the main antagonist in my upcoming debut campaign. He's a half Goliath, half blue dragon. In my homebrew setting a certain colony of Goliaths carry the werebear lycanthropy gene, so for this guy the bear part didn't quite mesh into the genetics. He's able to shapechange between Goliath and half dragon form, with his latter form also sprouting tufts of course hair. I did this for the purely dramatic effect of having this already imposing Goliath figure transform into an even more intimidating presence.

I have played a half-dragon before, he was a half-orc half-prismatic dragon cleric of the strength domain and was an absolute beast in combat. From memory he had 30 strength, being the max he could start with, as I scored a single 18 with my attributes. The rest of his ability scores were nowhere near as ridiculous. He would have been insanely overpowered in some groups but he joined a campaign where the other members had already been running for a while and were 5th level. He was a lot of fun to play as he had decided that his ancestry meant that he was destined to become overlord of the goblinoids of his region.

I have two accounts of Half dragons within my campaign. One serious, one silly. The serious character was a half-White Dragon, who was trying to combat his limitations of being the son of a white dragon by trying to become a wizard. Needless to say, he wasn't able to since he had a hard time learning magic on a academic level. Since his academy believed he wasn't able to learn magic, he was kicked out. However he soon found out he was able to learn magic on a more hands on sense. He learned by watching, not reading basically and so he became a path of Rage Magic Barbarian. The silly one, was a half- Black Dragon Illithid who became a werebear and then obtained Lichdom. It was after he obtained Lichdom(while also being a werebear), he was basically sucked into the Abyss where he was asked by literally all the demon lords if he would want to become a Demon Lord as well. He accepted this, and goes out drinking with Graz'zt every week.

I typically make half-dragons, cambions, and other planar hybrids have souls, but their souls are supplemented by a particular source of planar energy due to their heritage. Similar to how a sorcerer gets their power, but rather than drawing on the energy for a source of arcane power, it’s more so a vital part of them, like blood or lymph, their physical form depends on the presence of that energy to function.

Excellent video AJ. I now know that my 5-subject notebook I wrote in the 90s for my player characters "Demidragons" was not so crazy and was not loved because it was niche. I actually included player character versions of dragons and different versions of bloodlines and growth, a way to customize your dragon blood and the "lesser being" to create your dragon PC or draconic hybrid. Most played the boring one, the double-sized member of their non-dragon race with cosmetic alterations and available demidragon traits and mana techniques. Some did love the level-based growth. Some did love hoard-based growth. Some just loved the simple. One dragon-blood was an enemy race. They were a race of Lizard Men created by Red Dragon polymorphed... lusty rogue Red Dragon... with a perverse curiosity. He created the Dragon Men people. They were tougher Lizard Men that can fly clumsily and bellow out fire breath every 3rd round while having major heat resistance... and a special vulnerability to dragon killing weapons (like all demidragons and dragons). One of my reoccurring villains/anti-heroes is Seth in my campaigns. He is a Drow hybrid with a Deep Dragon. His Kit is ironically a hybrid of Assassin and Dragon Slayer. Well, maybe not ironically. He can bypass most defenses in any of his attacks against Underdark beings, bypassing defenses is HIS thing and he is the best at doing it. He is the boring mix, a double-height Drow with 8x the mass. The least of his abilities are really impressive, his fighting talents that are enhanced by his arsenal of magic items. His Deep Dragon nature is stronger than most, Underdark gear he carries does not suffer when he uses them in the surface world like they would be if carried by most. However, he lacks the ability to not get blinded nor hurt by bright sunlight without magic or cover... ever. Evil DM snippet... those casting hurtful light to steal his ability to be stealthy but really bolster his rage to give +10 to hit and damage, let him ignore the first 3 pts of damage of every hit (minimum is taken of 1 HP), and give him 3 additional attacks while all attacks are considered "blind". He is skilled in Blindfighting to the level of +8 blindness canceling. And... yes.... he is a reoccurring NPC that is a role-playing guy to either direction, preferable to not being a murder-hobo bad guy. I had what is now classified as a "murder hobos" that made me give serious thought into Seth. I had to create a whole story and thing about him because of those idiots. The silver lining, Seth is now a wonderful half-dragon!

Rare case of a melee class being able to dish as much/more damage than spellcaster classes. Double natural armor advantage, immune to poisons, fire, diseases, basically immortal, double unarmed strike advantage, can heal his own wounds without needing a healer... Once we were done with this campaign my DM told me to switch characters because I could basically just walk into any situation or fight and come out unharmed and having left a gory mess of whatever attacked me behind. It didn't help that being half brass dragon my character was super cocky and talkative and would continuously jest with the opponents during a fight... Fun fact: my party's preferred mode of transport was riding on my character's back, because he was strong, fast and tough enough to be much more convenient than having to deal with horses.

About the lacking culture/heritage, I think halfdragons would be quite similar to tieflings in this respect, individuals may have extremely different origins, (a loving family or the unwilling result of an arcane ritual), but they are all outcasts, distrusted for their assumed evil nature, their strange appearance, their potentially destructive breath weapons (a haphazard fire blast could level a village of thatched huts). Dragonborn especially may see halfdragons as abominations or mockeries of themselves, actively persecuting and stirring rumours against them. If they aren't sterile their ancestry could lend itself to some very interesting characters, I can imagine a family with a longstanding draconic heritage wouldn't appreciate being called "halfbreeds". It would be interesting how their culture and traditions might develop, maybe "wyrmling", "great wyrmling", "wyrm" and "great wyrm" are used to describe children, grandchildren, parents and grandparents, this could create some amusing misunderstandings with other races. :) While the dragonborn are kind of disappointing, all with the same cookie-cutter origin and deliberately nerfed abilities. Halfdragons can be so unique in their backstories and characteristics, pampered child or tortured pawn, with powers and impulses they may struggle to control. A sorely underappreciated race/template as they're a mix of the best of dragonborn and tieflings.

OP ? .. Nah your DMs are just being whining jerks. Multiclass rogue2nd" for evasion"/Wizard 5th/ Loremaster4th prestige class for quicker caster level gain; CR:11; caster level: wiz9th. Polymorphself your PC into a winged lizardman/ half-dragon. Make a tongue ring that spits Lightning Blots or Cone of Cold/Fire. Take a couple of levels in fighter for two extra feats for Fly By Attack, and Ranger for two weapon fighting. Some regard the path of a half dragon is to be able to cast Polymorph to turn into a full dragon. Instead of becoming a lich at 12th-level, you could become a 3d12 dragon with 12th-level sorcerer/wizard caster level. Then again it is up to your DM or your fellow players out voting the DM. I played off a 10th-level wizard with a few levels in rogue to bluff my way as being multiple different monsters/ fiends. As punishment my DMs hade me rewrite up all my skill ranks as outsiders to be used as npc in campaign. I was also the shop's fourth backup DM and ran player vs player PC battles.

Also half dragon barnacles might protect the ships, they are growing on. On the other hand, they will make keelhauling even more painful. And half black dragon, acid breathing shipworms are the bane of all sailors. I am currently working on a swamp region in which all creatures are ore will soon become half dragons (thanks to dragons understanding evolution and wanting to create a deep impact in their ecosystem and leaving an everlasting heritage), so even if you just flip over a stone, everything will spit acid in your face. Also all those half dragons influence the ecology and change the food net (they can reproduce and are really invasive, especially since the ecosystems they invade do not have the elemental resistances that their original habitat had). I think one of my favorite half dragons I am currently working on, is a gigantic blue dragon man o´war that rules as a tyrannical queen over the sea in the hollow world of my setting and stores its hoard in its translucent pneumatophore (it uses the up flying nectar of the world willows to counterbanace the weight). Also, since siphonophores are colonial, "she" is not only the queen but also the aristocracy (technically this colony does not have a gender since they are polyps and thus the asexual part of the life cycle of the species). Also if blood can create half dragons, things will get interesting. Imagine all those parasites that will soon become half dragons! Maybe the dragon has nematodes that will rise and protect its host (or emerge after the dragon died). Maybe the old black dragon had a favourite bog or lake he liked to rest in, and now the people tell stories about those strange scaled giant leeches that are starting to get a breath weapon and also sprout little wings and start to fly around. Or imagine the heroes that recently have slayed the ancient red dragon. Now his corpse lies in the woods and his blood is seeping away in the ground. If you remember the high abundance of biodiversity in only a hand full of earth, you might realise that there soon will be fire breathing earth worms, scaled springtails and many other organisms. Also what about scavangers both on land and in the sea that will eat dead dragons? Might they also become half dragons or creatures alike? Can you imagine a dragon fall ecosystem in the deep sea analoge to the whale fall communities? There are many interesting things to consider!

In the Forgotten Realms paperback "WAR IN TETHYR" a female gem dragon (I think a Amethyst dragon) had birthed a new for of dragon. This character was female with red hair and did not know she was a dragon until she changed but thought she was a human girl. When she changed she became a one of a kind ruby dragon with a breath weapon made of ruby dust blown at speeds that could shred flesh. How could this have happened and have you heard anything else on this one of a kind dragon?

I'm playing as a female Silver Half-Dragon Horizon Walker Ranger in a Homebrew Campaign though technically she has to be classified as a Silver Dragonborne due to the mechanics. Though lore-wise she's a Silver Half-Dragon right down to having a tail that combined with draconic growls, hisses, snarls, and other noises lets you know her emotions.

I once played a white half dragon monk in one of my friends D&D campaigns that used a synthesis of 1st and 2nd edition rules. Eventually the character got converted into a fighter after my friend also let the character have cleric as a second class and also was granted the ability to turn into a full dragon by either Tiamat or Bahamet (they worked together in his campaign rather than being at odds, so I forget which one granted the ability to turn into a dragon) once the character got to 17th level monk/cleric/white dragon and realized his mistake (it was a high level, high power campaign, but that combo was too OP for even a campaign that started at level 10 and I even agreed with him). Anyhow, that was a fun character (both as a half-dragon monk and a white dragon fighter/cleric).

AD&D2ndE role playing dragons was about .. role .. playing and not xp award gain. 3rdE was xp gain to create magic items. Problem with RP dragons is, after they reach 200 years of age, they start to sleep decades at a time. So you have to play a younger dragon and your starting PC's great grand child.

Got a game where half-dragons were very much the full rarity that they should be, but something 'stirred in the water' that drove many full blood dragons, even those without an innate transformative ability, to breed (naturally those that can't transform found rituals and other means) outside their race, a drive of quantity over pureblood retention. It hasn't come to light what this occurance was, or could be, but the need to pass on the blood was so strong that it superceded any other natural drive. Essentially this had lead to a fifty year period where half-dragons have come about here and there, many by one-night stands and the like in all corners of the world, only a meager handful being from actual romantic pairings. A Bahamut follower group who have come off of a prolonged war with Tiamat's followers are now seen as something of an authority to these half-dragons, and have decided that there's a need to actually create a settlement in my campaigns main setting, a vast city-state where law dictates that might makes right, so they figure their inherant abilities, as well as the fact the outcastish dragonkin are likely to be fairly powerful to a one. Out of the five hundred across the continent it takes place, two hundred and fourty have decided to join them, with the others too afraid or secular to wish to band together (although it's noted those made in romantic pairings are almost all in refusal to join the community for more obvious reasons). How their fates work out, being vastly outnumbered, but with some truly powerful half-dragons leading them, will work itself out in my next campaign. The players aren't part of it, or the main movers and shakers of the city-state, but part of a group of mitigators, known as the Greys, who essentially act as guards to the unaffiliated, and act as a semi-authority to the gangs that mostly run the place, mostly stopping people from engaging in truly abhorrant acts like mass poisonings or the like. The Greys aren't necessarily more powerful than any given faction, but they are backed from outside the city by a collaboration who want to make sure no one group gets too strong. That said, I've made my half-dragons fertile, but with some serious caveats; Firstly, breeding outside of elemental type has a strong chance of causing a 'mute' (and an absolute certainty with opposing elements, with a non-aligned otherwise having a 70% chance, and successful pairings have an extremely narrow chance of forming a unique energy type half-dragon which almost certainly will be sterile but likely very powerful if they can harness their peculiar lineage), a half-dragon with no elemental connection, no inherant magic, just slightly greater size and strength. Half-dragons can mate with dragons via the same transformative means, although it will create a rather fragile full blood dragon, dull in magic and not as large or strong, and conversely, mating with a conventional humanoid will create essentially a perfect candidate for a dragon-blooded sorcerer but no other advantages.

crazy half dragon combo? half dragon, half golem :D (yep, those are two templates that are applied to a core creature, but there is no core creature to be had :3) also, in a custom campaign world of mine, ive diverged the half dragon template into 3 types, the first type and second type are almost similar to a tee, if the childbearer was the dragon, they acquire a more dragonlike form, are born from eggs, larger more platelike scales plus tail with wings, sadly though, they are effectively sterile without much use of magic... type two is born if the childbearer was the nondragon, they are a live birth, can breed freely (albeit with severe risks if they mate with a dragon as i simplify things by making such unions just bear a full dragon.) and have belly buttons and nipples, but they lack the full scales combo as thiers are smaller for easier mobility and smoother surface for birthing reasons, in a human example, thier features are more shapely to the human side of things, have talons but no wings or tail, teeth but no snout to properly use it (d4 instead of d6), this variant was made for easier use in most campaigns since its not gonna tank as much lvl loss save for type 3..... and finally if youve read through this essay, type 3 are the artificials, those made by arcane experimentation or through the use of the dragon disciple class. this type is much more.... mutable than the other two kinda as it involves tweaking class effects for whatever the hell.

In the realm of weird combos, I made a half brass dragon triton storm sorcerer (from her triton mother) and vengeance paladin. It's a bit min-max for sure… when she reaches 6th level sorcerer she will have resistance to lightning and thunder damage in addition to her fire resistance. Her dragon father was wounded near fatally by Imyrrith (sp?) in an air battle, so he fled to the sea, shifted into a male triton, then hid there, falling in love with a female triton which resulted in her birth. As an adult, she took up work on a ship as many storm sorcerers do, when her crew was killed by a green dragon which aids pirates by gassing the crew, leaving the pirates no resistance to their plundering (this storyline is from an old adventure in a very early Dungeon magazine). She now hunts evil dragons (paladin) and ultimately seeks to find out if her father still lives. Since she's 9th level, I've equipped her with a dragonslayer great sword just to put the whole NPC over the top!

There is a homebrew Supplement for DnD 5e called Children of the Dragon, which, among other things, provides a few new subclasses. One of which is the Way of the Weave Monk, more or less a Monk-Wizard hybrid, basically a Jedi. That could be an interesting character: a Half-Half-Dragon Jedi. Another Idea I had for a while now, that, while it doesn't really fit the topic, fits thematically: a Yuan-Ti Pureblood Way of the Dragon Monk (to my knowledge not an official subclass). A Yuan-Ti Pureblood, that, as a result of an Yuan-Ti Infiltration, is born into a human Noble family with ties to a Dragon. And with her showing reptilian traits, like scales and slitted pupils, she is convinced, that those traits are proof of her draconic lineage.
