I can just imagine an entire campaign centered around this guy. At low lvls they kill some cultists who seem to worship just regular old worms. Sprinkle in bit and pieces of hints in the form of random and sporadic earthquakes, or people being swallowd ny the ground randomnly, maybe some people getting the madness from him. Start the campaign something very similar to a false hydra, and as the game goes on just introduce increasingly more common, monstrous and prevalent types of wurms/worms/ wyrms, untill it culminates around lvl 17 in his summoning, and the last three levels being the party trying to figure out a solution to this world eater. You inspired my obox ob campaign, ehich my party told me was their favorite, you have now inspired me again

That was the final issue of Dragon Magazine (under paizo) and marked the end of my "golden years" for DnD since I hated 4e and never bothered to get in to 5e since I had PF1e to turn to. I still have that issue and the newspaper clipping for when Gary Gygax passed away is tucked into the pages, I forgot I did that, but this has been a wonderful walk down memory lane, I thank you for that. The Obyrith and particularly Ugudenk were my favorite aspects of the DnD cosmology, and the Elder Evils as well (I kinda ruled Obyrith lord's are always elder Evils before it was moreRless stated that way for 5e). The Tanar'ri are mortal nightmares, their time as rulers of the abyss is fleeting, when mortals are gone, along with their nightmares, the Abyss, and that is to say, the Obyrith... We'll play on Lovecraft "The Obyrith were, the Obyrith are, and the Obyrith shall be again; not in the spaces that we know... But between them!"

OBYRITH LORD LET'S GOOOOOO. You ever hold off on writing a comment because you were too hyped about the video? Because this is the second time for me in like two months. There's so much here I adore, but to try break it down into three things, Firstly, seriously all the Obyrith Lords were this cool. Even the more comprehensible ones read like something that was only barely-constrained into a game system. Mechanically, Obyrith in general were a triumph: I didn't parse it at the time, but each of them was statted out more like a boss fight than an individual creature, no matter the CR, and this fit the theme of "thing you were never really meant to encounter and shouldn't want to". Understand *seeing* Ugudenk close enough in the edition it debuted in gave you a blanket -4 to basically every time you rolled a dice. Assuming a level 20 character and barring minmax shenanigans that meant your chances to *do* anything were nearly cut in *half* so long as you were, you know, subject to *gravity* . This isn't a creature you're meant to be *able* to just gung-ho your way into a boss fight with, and the ludonarrative absolutely supports it. AJ does something here, though, that the original material never broached. Ugudenk's official art absolutely reflects its size, making it look massive in a way few other things in the game ever do. But the conceit of "the monster is so big that its very presence is setting-endangering, and it has to be fought from the inside" was something only ever done with Atropus and Shothragot, that I can remember. Both of which were small *moons* in scope. Taking the sheer apocalyptic nature of the Elder Evils rules and putting them on Ugudenk feels *right*: in the case of Shothragot just its emergence destroyed an entire region in whatever setting you chose to put the adventure in. Which leads to the last thing. Because there are two things in the Abyss (at least) that match the description of 'A thing so massive it is a layer unto itself, or something more'. AJ has a video about the Draeden already, but one has to wonder which between the two of these monsters is more existentially horrifying. The Draeden, after all, is contained and caught within the Abyss. Ugudenk might be a *thing* reaching *through* it and into other planes from somewhere Outside: a manifestation of the Far Realm that shouldn't be possible still, representing the most grievous breach between the multiverse of what Can be and the place of what Can Not. Now go inside it and strike it down, heroes. Just, don't go too far to get back. Where it ends up might not be a place even the greatest of heroes can go.

It's more a way of speaking about the planes than a specific number. It makes it easier to catalog. That said, sometimes layers' numbers indicate that they have some sort of clusters, such as the three layers controlled by Graz'zt (45th, 46th, 47th), called the Azzagrat.

Weird theory: Ugudenk is part of the digestive track of the Abyss itself, which proved itself to be a being with a will in the Demogorgon video when it directly retaliated against a pantheon that tried to tear a layer out. Whereas a demon invasion is the the teeth that rip a dimension apart, the abyssal energy that converts that ruined dimension into a layer of the Abyss acts as stomach acid (melting the reality like the lego-brick analogy). Then Ugudenk is like a terrible intestine, continuing the digestive process and sending the 'nutrients' to the Abyss to allow it to keep burrowing through reality.

I actually had a homebrew campaign that is related to the Abyssal Tower and everything that is part of it. My DM said that if obyriths and Tharizdun created the abyssal tower that expands by corrupting other planes and dimensions, there could also be a another plane that is opposite to the abyssal tower. He called it the Expanding Plane where purest forms of everything exist such as union between all races and the holiest and purest forms of every kind being, this is also the place where no kind of evil exist, this place is not just wonders and pure good, it is also a place where the fallen realms and planes could rise again and live as part of the expanding plane. Edit: This idea got stuck in my head.

There is an audio transcript on the youtube channel of a chapter from the story "The last Hunt" called "Flesh Noose" written by Robbie MacNiven and narated by "Vox in the Void". It has an exclent depiction of your normal human NPCs encountering something equilivent to Ugudenk. Warning, Extreamly graphic and very dark. I won't post a direct link because im not sure if linking to other youtube accounts is allowed or not, but a simple search for the chapter title will get you there.

I've heard the name before, i think in one of your videos btw, but never realized the sheer immensity of it. I could see this either as a cool end of a campaign for characters of level 15+ OR the pivotal moment, the turning point, in a campaign for 10+ leveled characters. They can't possibly defeat it without some artifact level McGuffin, while the epic characters of the world keep it at bay. They will defeat it in the end, but what happens next? What did they sacrifice? Who was lost ? How will they rebuild ? Who is ultimately responsible? Will they try to seal it forever?( is it even possible?) . Another idea is this to be a cataclysmic event that will happen again if the PGs don't act to stop it. Dozens of ideas for adventures or campaigns even.

Some ijit finds a lost and obviously evil tome but thinks they can get use or control something that is WAY WAY WAY beyond their comprehension. F around and find out lol Give the PCs a warning of what happened last time this thing was let loose and an entire planet was destroyed Maybe a massive ritual from 1000s of years ago was completed, consuming the souls of an entire civilization but the ritual was stopped at the last moment. BUT, it was only paused, the door was unlocked, the handle was turned, One last simple task and the latch will blast open and everything will be obliterated. Better find and stop that hapless ijit… No pressure.

Is it just me or does the sound on this video seem kinda fuzzy? Also, I feel like the idea that "lesser" utterly gigantic worm monsters might spawn as a sign of Ugudenk's presence is neat. Like before it shows up on a plane freakin Shai-Hulud, Purple worms, and Beetlejuice Sandworms would crop up in groups and might even be left behind in areas where Ugudenk was somehow driven away from. The PS2 game Rogue Galaxy also had some truly mindbendingly enormous worms that could be fun to use if a DM was feeling crazed and wormy.

Been working on Obyrith material myself. Nothing like an extinction level monster to wake up the worldspace. Their unending hunger and unstable biological metabolism is next level darwinism at an exponential rate. They did escape their own world that they consumed everything in existence, from plants, to animals, to planets, and whole stars. They always have room for seconds. And the fun part, they are already here. Have fun ttrpg spaces. Those Obelisk were their rides. Good thing Vecna knows how to make some and slew all that knew how to make them. He is the new off world taxi driver for all of existence when the eldar Obyrith manages to squeeze itself through that tiny hole they tore in time/space fabric when they came through.

@@jacobfreeman5444 fluid. Those with multidimensional awareness might seem like lifetimes of work and war, to lesser, less than the most minute breakdowns of fractions of seconds to be sure. Ugudenk is just a world worm, an obyrith maggot. There are those that are larger and more ambitious. The thing with obyriths is where they were they were unchained. The moment they stepped here they are bound by creation, the laws and the limitations. They are at war with creation itself here. They are struggling against it, that is why they appear as they do to those world bound. Obyriths have the capacity to go off world and still survive the ether of nothingness. That is until they tangle with those things off world, or bound to them. ; ) They did tangle with one, and by the thousands they fell. Until at last its mortal form was sundered. 1 became 9 fold, and one 12 fold became 3. The laws of creation. There are more, even some heroes that can fell an obyrith. Sending a message that ripples back to whence they came. We will not go quietly into the evernight. You will not consume us all thing of the beyond. Here you are less, but here we can be more.

I had an adventure once, where the players went all the way back... back to the obyrith realm. Staring into the nothing something still stared back. They illuminated the light of creation, and it blinked, turned its form away, if only briefly. Struggle as it may it was too massive to gain entry, it tore at the boundry of creation to no avail. They stood, staring back, its lashes ever reaching, and it was done. For the players did not come alone.

im making him the BBEG for my camagin in which my players are inside an impossibly large eldritch horror. theres a group of rebels who are attempting t summon Ugadenk inside this eldritch horror in order to kill it and escape. its up to my players if they want to help these anarchists or put an end to them in order to live peacefully as parasitic citys within its concluded organs. any thoughts?

I like it. Gotta make sure the environment is pleasant enough for people to want to stay in the first place. Maybe have them inside of a creature in the far realm, and the creature is keeping them protected out of curiosity/ “good will”

Well, @@evangelineathanasia499, as AJ has stated many times in his series on Demons, their Lords and the Abyss at large, the Abyss is alive in _some_ way. Probably a definition of "alive" that the mortal mind can only grasp in the broadest of strokes, never able to truly understand what the specific mechanism of life the Abyss operates with even if we had Vecna, Dagon or Tharizdun himself lecturing us on the topic, PowerPoint presentation and all. An example of this abomination of life is the formation of the Dreaming Gulf. Due to shenaniganery by Demogorgon, a pantheon of gods tore out a layer of the Abyss along with the demon lord that ruled the specific layer. The Abyss, understandably, took exception to that and proceeded to devour the offending pantheon, in entirety, and take their tormented nightmares to forge an entirely new family of demons. To reference another underrated creator, Ze Frank; that is how the Abyss do.
