It’s a good looking bike but it has the same bhp as the Sinnis Hoodlum which costs £800+ less. The fuel tank is massive which is impressive, the twin exhaust is very cool and the double front discs are a real bonus. I think led lights all round now should be standard. I changed my Hoodlum bulb to an LED and it makes a huge difference riding at night. Also think it would look even cooler all blacked out like the Sinnis. I did watch your reviews on the Keeways and Hoodlum before I bought the Hoodlum. Love it, even better with the toro exhaust too

It's a very pretty motorcycle and the black with the gold AJS, very traditional. But with a top speed of only 60mph, it will struggle keeping up with traffic as soon as you're outside of town. It will mean riding the bike on full throttle all the time just to keep up with other traffic. Clearly the 11.2 bhp is not enough for the weight of the machine. It's a shame as the law allows up to 14.75 bhp (11 kwh) for an A1 licence. The output of a 1979 Honda CB125T (parallel 125 twin), was 17 bhp and a top speed of 80mph. So it's quite feasible for AJS to produce a bike, with a parallel twin 125cc engine, with 30% more power, which would make all the difference. I enjoy the way that you don't take yourselves too seriously and the quality of the camera work is excellent.

First thing is it looks amazing! Properly on the money! The proportions are right, though what are the exact dimensions? Negatives for me - those mirrors are the right size but just look a bit meh. Maybe something oval-ish could be better. And that exhaust note doesn't sound particularly throaty. I sincerely it is because the engine hadn't yet been worn in. Overall, I want one. Speaking as an expat living in Indonesia, I would love it if there was an AJS representative in my city and if the bike came with an engine between 150cc and 200cc (125cc bikes that size don't sell well here). I'm currently scraping together for a Benelli Motobi Evo (that's Keeway K-Light to you) but would happily swap it for a Highway Star.

First bike factors need to be based on style, comfortability, cost to run, purchase price and what you want the bike for. Air cooled bikes are usually £500-£1000 cheaper than liquid cooled bikes. Liquid cooled will get you 12-14.5 bhp (65-75mph, perhaps more), air cooled 9-12bhp (50-65, perhaps 70).

@motorsforthemasses5 жыл бұрын
Exactly that.
@gregorytimmons47775 жыл бұрын
It's time to stop bashing them for being Chinese built but only if they put some quality and care into building them. Some Chinese scooters and I'm sure the cheap retrofit bicycle engines don't even have valve guides. The valve stems just run Steel against Aluminimum.
@Signals9275 жыл бұрын
It's a very nice looking cruiser but I wish AJS would make their 125's at least capable of doing 70mph sometimes I feel the extra power on the motorway or dual carriageway's is important. I have been leaning towards the MUTT bikes because their specs show 70mph on all their 125's. PS: What do I do if I haven't got an AJS dealer near to where I live but have a motorcycle dealer 15 mins away. I'm thinking service and warranty.
@stewartnorton63865 жыл бұрын
I don't know a lot at all about motorbike engines but to me it seems a lot of the 125's share the same engines but some bikes are 11kw and some are nearer to 12 making that difference between 60 and 70 , I don't really know why all manufacturers don't just get the most power they can out of the motors. As mentioned that extra 10 mph can make all the difference on 70 limit road.
@motorsforthemasses5 жыл бұрын
It is all down to development cost and the engine they already have. Putting an engine in that has already been developed is more cost efficient than developing or paying the rights for an engine that is 13-14 bhp. Otherwise the cost of the bike will go up and on paper will price them out of the market. Re: servicing. Even if you bought an AJS, as long as you had a proper motorbike shop that could stamp the service book, the warranty would stand, you just notify the purchased from dealer where you have had it done and by whom. Warranty work would ideally need to be done at an AJS dealer but can be outsourced to another bike shop as long as the warranty payment would be accepted by AJS and the bike shop.

My end bike will be a Harley, I've always wanted one so will need a couple of years to save up anyway! haha. Obviously I will want my first bike to be a cruiser style, and would prefer to buy new, I just hear so much negativity surrounding Chinese bikes, it makes me nervous! I have been looking at the AJS Highway Star and also the Sinnis Hoodlum I love the look of both. If you were spending your money, which would you buy?
@motorsforthemasses5 жыл бұрын
Sadly Chinese bikes received a bad reputation from the days of people buying the cheap crap and either not PDI'ing correctly or getting one of the lesser brands out there. AJS and Sinnis are decent and the only really issues can be mild steel used for things like the exhausts. Engines are not the issue, it was mostly crap electrics. However they really have upped their game! The Highway Star is definitely a better built bike, bigger, smoother and speed wise, they are equal. Sit on both, listen to them, ride if you can before you decide.
@Toni-84-15 жыл бұрын
Motors for the Masses Thank you! I am a little confused with AJS are they still British or are they now classed as Chinese? I see lots of good thing about the more recent Chinese bikes but have had several people warn me off. I would love one of the two I mentioned though. Does one sound less 125ish than the other? It’s always hard to tell without hearing in person. I want something I love the look of and will be reliable to ride and get some experience before I think about doing my full test. :) I would definitely come have a look before making a final decision, I’m only in Norfolk so that won’t be a problem!
@motorsforthemasses5 жыл бұрын
@@Toni-84-1 Hi, the Highway star is definitely better built and sounds more 250 due to its twin cyl engine. AJS are Chinese but sadly there is still the band wagon view out there amongst people that do not actually have any experience of modern Chinese bikes. Currently out of stock of the Highway star, and the hoodlum I don't generally stock due to its age as it is not a new bike (been out a few years now), but can still get both. One big influence on a Chinese bike view is how they are treated. Often the cheaper bikes are bought by younger people with little care for the product and the concept of what properly looking after the bikes' condition impacts on how it performs, works and lasts. Believe me we have seen our fair share too of 1 year old Honda's that look 30 years old!

Superlight is a little lighter. Highway star sounds better, is a little faster and struggles less. Superlight is cheaper but AJS is better put together. If you only plan on keeping a year or so, Superlight is a cheaper, good start, as it is a decent bike; but will not feel as good as the AJS. The twin engine feels nicer than the single but the single is a reliable engine anyway. If you can afford the extra, the highway will sound and look better imo.

split between Klight 125cc and this highway star. need to make a decision before the end of the week. my plan is to do the NC500 route this summer if restrictions are lifted. do you think the highway is worth the xtra 800 quid in terms of reliability power and just overall bike ? im not really bothered about the speed. cant find a comparison between the 2 bikes anywhere. also iv heard the highway star is being discontinued and being replaced with a new bike in the summer, which makes me wonder why its being discontinued as a relatively new bike. any news on this. a bit long winded but Thank you in advance :)

Haven't heard for sure the Highway Star is going. They have just changed the colour options. The engine is that from the old DD125, but now FI. Where ever you get it from, make sure the dealer adjusts the valves/checks them on PDi as they are known for being out and needing adjustment quite quickly. Highway star is more comfortable and better for longer journeys for that and for less stress on the engine; as well as looking and sounding better.

I stopped watching at 1:55 straight after they said what the bhp is. My ears pricked up at liquid cooled then felt crushed. Basically same bhp as an old air cooled Chinese bike like my Sinnis Cafe. But at least with that I could tune it up.

had mine just over a year. Great bike but the fixings &cable tidys are lousy and are rusted badly. The nuts bolts should've been stainless. This bike DOES NOT LIKE WATER !!!!!

@@motorsforthemasses as with Royal Enfield it's nice to see the AJS brand lives on, although be it in an Asian variant. What with Mitt, Raptor and Benda you're spoilt for choice when it comes to cheap chopper style bikes.

Are you joking? Three thousand pounds for a heavy 11hp Chinese sourced bike??? If I want Chinese, 11hp and retro there is the lovely lexmoto valiant or tempest, both significantly lighter and probably nippier than this. At 3k, if you shop around a bit, you are starting to approach the territory full fat 15hp machines like the KTM 125s, or better-built stuff like Hondas. I get why the FB Mondial is worth almost 4k because of its power and its fantastic looks (although I obviously would never actually buy one because of so many reliability problems reported). It says AJS but it's a Chinese sourced OEM type machine. Which is fine at 2k. The Honda CB125R has two more bhp, is a lot lighter, will hold its value a lot better, and is much better built and designed. And there are some on auto trader now for £3400. Seriously, who is going to take a punt on this overweight, overpriced generic plodder of uncertain pedigree and unknown reliability, when you can have a brand new Honda for a couple of hundred more?

You know the CBR is built in Thailand right? Plus it is £4k. Also, the KTM, which is very different is £4300....I don't see any similarity.....As for the Lexmoto Valiant or Tempest...completely different, looks, ride, style, engine, everything.

@@motorsforthemasses , people who favour cruiser styling are probably the older demographic, and they will be more open to the retro styling of the Lexmoto machines. I am not suggesting they are identical, but rather that they may appeal to a similar customer group. And as one of that customer group and someone who is open to both styles of bike, I see no reason for pay £1300 more for this cruiser than for the Valiant. I just don't see the value,. Re. being built in Thailand, you are missing my point. Country of manufacture is largely irrelevant, but what is different with Honda is that they have invested huge amounts in the design and testing of the CB125R. The CB125R is not a risk, in any sense, as are some of the newer Chinese machines. The CB125R will not be another FB Mondial, with poorly designed brakes and numerous design glitches. Because it is designed by Honda, not by an anonymous importer with two office units who have bought the rights to the AJS name. The two things are worlds apart in every sense, and at 500 more the Honda is a safer bet, and will sell for a much higher price after you pass your test and move on. There are a large number of brand new CB125Rs on autotrader right now for around £3400 plus OTR, not 4k. I'm sorry, this is just a marketing exercise. They think they can use the AJS name to flog a heavy and underpowered generic bike for 500 less than you can buy a Honda? I like cruisers, but for an extra 500 the Honda is just a far better overall proposition.

You do know that the £3400 Honda is made in a Honda factory not nonfangwang then choose what badge you'd like on it. Of course it will have zero used value
