Speaking as a metal fabricator, machinist, avid gun lover, huge supporter of 2A rights, & massive lover of you're channel, I've been following you're progress on this project since you're first post about it and love seeing all the progress on it. I've even watched Titans of CNC's videos of fabrication on the parts. I can't wait to see the V3 fire for the first time. It's been a incredible journey and I'm glad to have been here for the whole thing.

Honestly, as only a casual observer, I love projects such as these. Just freewheeling something that no-one has thought of before and going "You know what, why don't we? We have the means, we have the technology!" and then get stuck in on actually making that thought a reality. I'd also love to know what Kalashnikov might have thought if he were still alive (well OK, he'd be well over 100 years old by now, but still, if he was hale and healthy I mean), I'd like to think his eyes would have lit up with the thought of an engineering challenge, and he'd have gotten stuck in and come up with all kinds of suggestions and potential solutions to engineering problems.

Use the failed receiver anyway , make a .416 Barrett ,.460 styre ,.408 or .375 cheytac , .338 Excalibur, .338 lapua , .378 weatherby, .375 ultramag...Or something in that range . Less pressure, the long bolt travel will smooth recoil if not lessen it . New lessons will be learned and you'll have a second unique ak.

"ok its been two weeks and the part is being shipped." "ok its been a week and we finally got the part, but it was damaged during shipping so we need to make another one."

Kind of curious now if the issues were bad work, going with the lowest bidder to save money, bad drawings or specifications, or just a failure to draw up a suitable contract that ensured the delivery of the part they was wanted. I gather these things aren't that simple for those who aren't experienced in them, you need to know exactly how to ask for what you want and to make sure that's what you are going to get per contract. I have heard worse stories of contract failures.

You have to remember that AKM is mostly type 1 refined for mass-production so let me put it this way: - AK"-46", worked on by three people on drafting tables against much more established designer teams - AK-50 is now arguably here, still in design phase - AK"-47" as accepted for production and service - AK type 1 QC problems driving costs up - AK type 2 and 3 production - AKM finally accepted, and it still wasn't "whole soviet union behind it" but a dozen people with drafting tables while the rest of izhmash were busy making machined AKs Modern digital engineering and manufacturing techniques make prototyping vastly easier but driving it to the point it can be produced to an army's demands of cost is a whole another story. If some day AK-50 in some form ends up being accepted as a replacement for M2 then yeah, it will be a straight up comparison to AKM's story. No disrespect for this awesome project of course.
@MrSomebodyStrange
@MrSomebodyStrange 10 ай бұрын
@@Klovaneer Yeah, it's basically a custom gun involving a lot of calculations and not designed for mass production. Basically this thingy can be compared to experimental weapon designs because it's a cool experiment, but it's not a military combat weapon. As for people who talk about ASh-12б 12,7х55 is no way a .50 BMG and is a totally different boi. It also moonlights as a revolver cartridge for one of the cyberpunkest guns ever, RSh-12 which is basically Mateba Autorevolver/Chiappa Rhino on steroids, perfect for decomissioning rogue androids and using it as a conversation starter with your colleagues in a van, using it as excuse for a long winded conversation about the nature of life and death and survival as a special police officer in an urban environment.

@@MrSomebodyStrange Russians had a rude awakening with crime and terrorism rampant after the dissolution and dished out dozens of funky designs. @tgi3d881
@tgi3d881 Жыл бұрын
Tolerances specified on the prints and datums are a big part of what contribute to what is and isn't out of spec. Also process. What helps for sheet metal parts is to have an engineering team design the custom tooling for fabrication. There are prints for tooling used to make firearms that you don't see unless you are fabricating. I haven't seen the AK50 prints, but where I work engineering sends us stacking tolerances. Other processes to think about is depending on material thickness, warping happens during cutoff. Meaning inspection needs to happen before cutoff. Machinability of the prints is important. Again I haven't seen the prints, but where I work we receive prints with non standard dimensions for features. Meaning we have to custom make tooling instead of ordering. Designing a print from a fabrication/inspection perspective reduces these issues

@@jimvac77 I'll try to answer your question. CNC is very repeatable AFTER the part and whole procedure is proven. After that, things like worn tools loose fixture etc - etc can cause a bad part. The problem with the AK50 project is he only wants one, at least for now. So each part is trial and error just like the old days, In the case of the handguard the machine shop should have owned up to the flaws and either tried again or gave up.
@jimvac77

@feez357 thank you. You'd think the manufacturer would still verify specs on the finished part prior to shipping to the customer though.
@pauliewalnuts240
@pauliewalnuts240 Жыл бұрын
@jimvac77 it's very common for a first batch of parts to be slightly off. Usually, a contract for x amount of machined parts is agreed upon and your not paying for the first 1-3 prototypes while manufacture is perfected. When something has to be so precise, a test run or 2 is common. Huge companies outsourcing manufacturing go thru the same thing. Hornby in the uk, a large toy company which makes scale model train replicas for hobbyist, when thru the same thing on their latest train and there a huge company. Think about going down to your local fabricator and asking for 1 custom car part. You'll pay for that 1 and it's unlikely to fit properly.

Designing & building a firearm is a literal work of art and science. It's a delicate balance of action, pressure, reaction, balance, and precision. I've been following your AK-50 build for some time now and I really appreciate you sharing your journey with us. I've only built one AK in my time (I'd like to build more in the future) which taught me that the design is just genius. I truly hope that your design is successful and goes into production even though I probably wouldn't be able to afford it ha ha ha!

Production for certain parts can take awhile, but say a customer is shopping shops for parts runs, you run test part, and then a small batch. It really shouldnt take years to have custom parts machined. There's so many programs in the world to help make life easier. It's no simple job, clearly, but it's doable. I was just starting college for mechanical engineering when I came across the AK-50. Now I have graduated and am working towards my masters in materials and manufacturing. It is cool because I was learning alongside this project and gained more appreciation for everything that goes into designing a mechanical system like this and it was inspiring to see the project come together. Having spent a fair amount of time in SolidWorks simulating things over and over again it is such a beautiful thing when you finally get to see the physical parts start to fit together. Can't wait to see this thing assembled in all its glory.

Still, the pressures involved in building a 50 cal, probably also better to wait until you're out of highschool to actually build. Even here, he probably came up with this idea in hs, himself. I don't know. Pretty awesome when someone actually is able to build a project they dreamt about in highschool, though.

I’m a CNC operator and for your heat treat issue I would recommend sending a slightly oversized part to heat treat and when it comes back you can grind or machine the hardened part down to size. This will help reduce warping and give you better tolerances with the finished part with a much nicer finish.
