Great quick and simple video showing clearly the steps to get to the internal machanisms. I've just got hold of one of these as my first Reel to Reel and going to delve inside soon. All functions on mine are working fine . .but there is a mechamical squealing present on playbal back. I'm hoping it's just a case of re-applying dried out grease. Cheers for the info.

Thankyou I have just bought a GX 4000D from ebay which initially seemed to be working fine, then after a second evening of use I noticed the speed whilst recording has gone skew whiff when the tape reaches about 2/3rds through.Any idea please what the problem could be. I am not any sort of servicing technician I am wondering could it be the belt which having looked at from the side back plate looks difficult to replace it seems hard to reach.Any advice will be much appreciated Thanks. just got my dads old 70's akai 4000ds mk11 to my home after many years of inactivity and i think it needs a look at as rewind very slow and tape sometimes comes of pinch roller when playing back!!!

I see a few people below asking about what sized Allen key needed to be used , I had the same problem too with not being able to find an Allen key small enough to undo the screws , I ended up taking it to an engineer who fixed it fine......when I asked him what sized Allen key he used he admitted to having to gently file down his smallest key to get it to fit ......so it looks like a lot of us have this common problem of finding a small enough key to do the job , so bare in mind that you may have to file down the smallest key you have by trial and error...good luck

I JUST GOT A 4000DB THAT COST ABOUT £280.THE SOURCE/TAPE IS NOTHING LIKE IT SHOULD BE EVEN IF I TURN DOLBY OFF DURING PLAYBACK.THE HEADS ARE CLEAN SO IS IT THE TAPE AND I HAVE USED QUITE A FEW WITH THE SAME RESULT OR IS IT THE 4000DB?I RECORD AT 3-3/4 IPS SO SELECT THAT ON THE EQUALIZER SWITCH AND TAPE SWITCH IS SET TO FULL RANGE.

How did you remove the round plate on top of the pich roller? It looked like it was already loose. I need to remove the plastic equivalent plate on a 4000D. Thanks.

I have the same model with the blue AKAI badge - the right silver rotary control doesn´t pull out for mono. When I tried that both silver controls came off. The spindle doesn´t seem to want to pull out - is this a fault or normal for this earlier model? Thanks.

I have an akai 1730D-SS reel to reel that slows down an eventually stops turning in play mode. It works fun in fast forward and reverse but when in play mode, it fails to continue playing. The motor simply stops turning and the tape seems to spin very fast, when it does turn, just before it stops.

Can you make a video to show how to disengage or disable the pause function,mine is stuck in pause and won't do anything else. The pause lever is stuck in the up position. Thanks

For those who wish to know the correct size hexagonal key to use? It’s 1.5mm I recommend getting a long series key as their less fiddly to handle in use.

I cant get a 1.5 key into the screw and all others seem too small, maybe it's stripped.

@@Jukedome I used a 1.3 mm hexagonal and it worked on my 4000DS model
