4 years ago I met with a guy in Colorado Springs and bought a 5k with red pads in amazing condition for $450. Really great deal. We met at a restaurant did the deal and I loaded my new baby in the back of our SUV. The SUV had one of them rear automatic doors that you push a button and it automatically closes. I guess there was a piece of luggage sticking out so the door didn’t close all the way and I didn’t notice.. I started driving and got on the road. I drove about 1000 feet and saw a message on the dash saying a door was open. I was probably doing 50 mph just about to get on the freeway when my ex wife screamed “oh my god the rear door is open!”. As soon as she said that I looked in my rear view mirror and watch the MPC 5000 sliding across the intersection I had just gone through. Yep my new MPC fell out of the damn car not even 5 mins after I bought it. It was like a bad dream I felt I was in. I stopped my car in the middle of traffic and ran over to pick it up off the road my chest and stomach hurting and all. When I got to where it fell out there was a couple in an old beat up truck. The lady had just picked it up off the road and they were about to take it. I yelled “that’s mine!!” And she handed it back to me. Her husband said “dude your door was open all your shit fallin out.” I grabbed my mpc and ran back to my car feeling sick to my stomach I didn’t even wanna look at it I knew it was done for. When I got to the gas station I finally pulled over and got the balls to look at the damage…..well what do you know….other than the side plastic cover being cracked this thing still looked perfect. I got home from the trip and plugged it in. Everything worked great. I had it for a year I ordered a new side cover from mpc stuff and then sold it on reverb for a grand 😂. The dude that bought it got it in the mail and said “bro this is the nicest 5k I’ve ever seen, you really take care of your stuff!” I ain’t gonna lie I laughed for a while.

Moral of the story these things are tough and built like tanks. I loved that machine but sold it because my son needed a dental procedure that was expensive and insurance wouldn’t pay. The 5k’s are good machines you just have bad luck OP.

I love this story. This sounds like something that would totally happen to me. I was driving out of my sub-division with my back hatch up. Thanks God I caught it before anything fell out. I'm glad it worked out for you. I have a new one now. It's been working out great for me. I'll eventually make a Part 2 to this.

I don’t buy S*** from guitar center any longer! It was due to a used Phil Jones bass amp they refused to negotiate the price on, tho’ I told them I was ready to purchase on the spot (which was $130.00 lower and I had already peeped the price of that particular amp used online)! Some craziness about their used items being “priced to sell” and that they do not move off “their” price during the first 90-days they have an item for sale. I told them that obviously they’re not in the business of selling equipment!

Thats tough. Looks like the unit in the video was dropped. I just pulled my 5000 out of storage, it was packed away for nearly 10 yrs. It worked perfectly when put away, but when I got it back out the pads didn't work! I found a video here showing a technique where you cut the sensor laminate to free up the sensor. This technique works! I am happy to say, I'm back in the lab again. The MPC5000 is such a fun machine to use!

how irritating.. Have you tested to simply open it and see if all slots and cables sit tight? I mean sometimes it could be such a thing. And the plate i think taking it off and applying some pressure over night should fix it. Cheers

It’s the motherboard that is failing. The most expensive part on these older mpc’s. Whoever sold that to him ripped him off big time. New motherboards (if you can even find them for the 5000, 2500) are like 500$+

My MPC 5000 started doing that too. Bruce Forat fixing mine said it’s power supply and driver. I think the main system needed upgrade to 2.0. They fixed a lot of the bugs

You already have it's sonic capabilities via the 1000. The MPC X has it's operational capabilities. Filter the X through the 1000, you have a 5000 that doesn't crash.

That is most likely a swolen capacitor pushijg the face plate up and probably causing the reboot when it starts to get a bit of heat going on. Might be an easy fix swaping the capacitor

You should definitely get another one. I hear that they can play beats from every MPC prior. Make a beat one of the og’s then drop it into the 5000 for extra editing. That’s a big win in my opinion. Maybe look into a 2500?

I've been following the discussions around MPCs, and I felt compelled to share some thoughts. Firstly, I appreciate the effort and dedication that goes into creating content and sharing opinions. It's clear that this is a passion-driven field, and that deserves recognition. However, I'm concerned about the impact of sensationalist titles and clickbait strategies on the perception of these products and the industry as a whole. The electronic music instrument industry is indeed niche and faces its own unique challenges. The use of grandiose or misleading titles can inadvertently create a negative impression, potentially harming an industry that is striving to innovate and serve a dedicated community. I believe that constructive criticism and honest reviews are invaluable. They guide consumers and support manufacturers in improving their products. But it's equally important to approach this with a sense of responsibility and an understanding of the broader impact.

I appreciate the feedback, however, this is my personal experience with the MPC 5000. I have a genuine love and admiration for the Akai MPCs. See my other videos. This is maybe 1, or 2 videos out of like 30 or 40 that I've had a bad experience. Good of bad, I document it. Check this one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIfVanyVmauqeZI This comes from a place of love. I literally have or had every MPC know man except the 2500 and the MPC61 keys now.

what i'm taking from this video is not that the mpc 5000 sucks, but that this is a faulty unit, and that the 'fail' mentioned in the title references that. it's counterbalanced by 'should i get another one?' which implies to me that the opinion isn't the machine itself has not value, but rather it'd better to evaluate a working machine. it does seems like something pretty major happened to the left hand side of the this unit!

Might just need to get a modern MPC and use the internal FX or output into a Tube Preamp/Channel Strip for vintage flavor

At “MPC Stuff” you can get spare parts like knobs. Your problem could be a RAM problem. You can also have your MPC fixed at MPC Stuff, but you have to arrange the cost before hand.

For me, the 5000 is the same as the 2500 with a synth. I like the simplicity of the 2500 more. The 5000 is not as complicated as the 4000, but I don't get the pure enjoyment of using it as the older MPCs. But, I am a fan. No disrespect the 5000. I only disrespect the Live 2 because of my personal experiences with it.

@@ppic7162 I bought the Live 2 last year January, because my X had some technical difficulties and was out for repair. I like the Live 2 a lot. I like how all the buttons light up and how it is portable. I use it in the living room and when I need to take my projects with me. I don’t have any experience with the 2500, although I almost bought it at the time, but picked the 5K.

If you send it back, let me have the red knob. Nowhere sells the red knob at all, even MPC stuff doesn't have it. I am missing that off mine. I bought two from Guitar Center. the first one had a bad power supply, and the second one has been great, with no issues. I paid $850 for mine. from Guitar Center. I do need to update the contacts on the pads since one sometimes doesn't fully respond but it does if I set it to full level so I think I'll replace the contact pad soon.

It can be an interesting machine, the 5000,but you don’t need it.Ive had a few myself.Got rid of the last perfectly working one because the programming/use/OS is a bit stiff. The 4000 is another level of sophistication tho….

ive had my 5000 since 2010 never had any problems . Its been rock solid and i have definitly put it through its paces. This gen of Mpc's are absolute tankds with out a doubt. That particular unit has been modified poorly it seems also droped from a roof with the damage shown. those two factors most likely resulted in a damaged piece of equipment. you get what you pay for.

They also lie over the phone to get you in store I knew a engineer who worked at the Guitar Center on Halsted and he said the manager would tell them to say whatever to get the customer in the store!!
