Hey tefty, thanks another helpful video. So you’re able to route sounds from other synths through the mpc? Do you find the keybed on the 37 to be sufficient vs the 61? How do you feel about the on board effects the mpc has? I ask since you have the Argon tied in there. Thanks for your time! 😊✌️

This is really helpful. do you have a video about how to get multiple synths into ABleton Live. right now I record on mixer and bring the stems in. but I want to get rid of the mixer and just record straight in like you're doing here. could use some help... love this set up you have here!! Looks like everything controlled through midi.. so how do you get each synth voice into Ableton. Something new I need to learn

Thank you! To answer your question, it's basically using an Audio Interface that can support enough inputs. I currently use a MOTU 828es with AVB networking to get a large amount of inputs (40+ in and out). But a lot of modern mixers now support individual track input support through USB connections (basically acting as an audio interface and mixer) Once you have everything plugged into your audio interface, you can rename the inputs in Ableton so it's nice and clear! Hope that makes 🙏

I just got this thing talking beautifully to my Jupiter-Xm and my Virus Snow, sequencing all 4 parts on each (5 if you count the Jupiter's drums). It handles program change really well once you figure out everyone's wacky midi implementation lol; I also did the same thing with the templates. Pretty nifty little toy, I must say!

Thanks for the videos. What is your experience producing with mpc vs ITB? In terms of beatmaking is it a faster workflow?
@teftymusictech
@teftymusictech 2 ай бұрын
I prefer writing standalone with hardware synths 80 percent of the time. If I have a fast deadline (like the same day) then I'll stick with pure ITB setup. But after 20 years, all the DAWs tend to blur together and do the same thing for me. Hardware has more identity and feels like I can assign 'roles' to specific synths. In the end though, no listener cares if you were ITB, Hardware, or some hybrid setup 👍 Also, yes, I feel like the workflow with an MPC is faster, but it took me a good year to two years to get really fast.

Great stuff man. I’m so leaning towards buying the Key 37 as my main guy. Had an op-1 for a while and like the engines inside but not keen on the sequencer..so want to link that up to start with. Or should I sell the OP to fund the key 37?? It’s a question I’ve asked myself quite often lately lol.
@teftymusictech

Thank you! That's a tough call. I've been close to selling my OP-1 recently. The engines are great but yeah, a lot of things are lack luster (sequencer, reverb, lack of multi-timbrality etc) If I had to pick one or the other, MPC all day long. You might miss the sounds though!

how do you setup software instruments in mpc ? do i need special cables for this ?
@teftymusictech
@teftymusictech 5 ай бұрын
Like the MPC plugins? Just select plugins in the MPC. If you're talking about Ableton hosting software instruments, basically a USB cable to the computer will do the trick. You then select Midi in the MPC and choose one of the USB Midi ports.

Oh nOoOoOO I might want iiiittttt hahaha. The thing that's selling me is that it can be a synth first, sequencer second because of the keys. Keys and a synth sound engine alone are that much of a big deal to me. Even just the Jura and Model D would be enough for me to get use out of this. I was commenting on your Hydrasynth Explorer video a few months ago looking for something to pair with the ol' Sp404mk2. This sort of nullifies that need all in one go. This is actually the first video I've seen where the sequencing of external synths has made any sense to me in practical terms haha.
@teftymusictech
@teftymusictech 5 ай бұрын
Nice! Yeah the Jura and Model D are my go to plugins on the MPC platform. I use them in Ableton as well since you get access to the VSTs when you own them. I think the main thing is whether or not you like the workflow of the MPC. That could be the real decision maker!

Luckily I've got a friend who's letting me borrow his MPC One for a little while to see if I'll be able go revisit the MPC platform with a better experience than I did a while back. Wish me luck 🤞🏼 Haha

I'm having a hard time figuring out what the MPC brings to the table if you're using Ableton. Not trying to cast shade, but just to figure out why use a little of each?
@teftymusictech
@teftymusictech 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question! Basically it comes down to workflow and inspiration. I've used Ableton since 1.0 (yes over two decades). But I've also used Logic Pro extensively and just about every other DAW to some degree. Having the midi side of things focused on the MPC platform feels inspiring to me after all these years of using various DAWs. Now if I wanted to make audio loops as the main focus, I'd still choose Ableton style clips. And for mixing/mastering/finalizing, I still prefer to have everything in Ableton's timeline. I'm not a fan of mixing and mastering in the MPC ecosystem. It's like wearing different hats, I prefer the MPC hat when I'm making beats/improvising midi ideas.

MIDI Note Off bug I get with incoming MIDI, and any Note Off will kill any playing notes of same note value no matter channel if on same port (only tested usb.) Haven't tested with MIDI outputs...
@JeffHopkinsMusic
@JeffHopkinsMusic 5 ай бұрын
I appreciate trying to address the midi off bug. But it's when sequencing the MPE externally with an external MIDI sequencer. In my case, I want to sequence some things with the Keystep Pro (like drums or Berlin style pluck beds) But any note off message received INTO the MPC from a separate controller, will be sent to all the channels, regardless of plugin or track designations. Easiest way to duplicate the issue is a MIDI controller that can send a split and middle C on two channels. Put a pad sounds on both channels on the MPC, ch 1 to plugin 1, ch 2 to plugin 2 and then hold one note while playing a short note on the other channel
@JeffHopkinsMusic
@JeffHopkinsMusic 5 ай бұрын
For a more DAWless approach of using MIDI sequencers or controllers live (not just recording a sequence from a single channel one at a time) it can break a otherwise great platform. Even just playing two controllers at once, left hand on pads, right hand on lead will prove difficult on note overlap with this bug.
@JeffHopkinsMusic
@JeffHopkinsMusic 5 ай бұрын
It's basically an issue for those trying to play multiple plugins live, or sequencing something not internally to the MPE. KSP, hapax, oxi one, Linnstrument, multiple keyboards etc

I only get that bug if I'm recording multiple tracks into the Force from an ext. It will play them all find, but if you record them all you'll see note getting cut off. I feel like at this point if they could've fixed it they would've by now, so they may be saving it for the next gen to give us a reason to upgrade. I hope I'm wrong & they fix it this year. The good thing about all MPCs using the same OS is that they all have the same bugs, which means there's more people bitchin' about it, tho, that haven't seem to much of a difference with this bug. Oh well...

Respectfully, I mentioned in the video I have the Key 37 plugged into the computer via USB. There's only one port for MPC to Computer. This is basic info that you learn right after opening up your MPC Key 37 out of the box and getting started, just after plugging in the power cable. If this video was labeled as a beginner video, I'd see your point. But it's not. It's an advanced setup that assumes basic knowledge of how to setup your MPC.

@@teftymusictech why I have you attention, can you tell me, how did you send the vst audio to the mpc in simple form?
@teftymusictech
@teftymusictech 5 ай бұрын
All good my friend! I was actually using Ableton as the digital mixer. So basically my audio interface was taking all the audio from the synths on the table and the drums from the Key 37. I was using the Key 37 as the main midi brain for the production. The reason I do this is I prefer the composing/beatmaking workflow of the MPC sequencer. But ultimately I like to mix and finalize my tracks in the Ableton timeline. It's like wearing different hats depending on the stage of production. So for this the VSTs I was using were just receiving midi from one of the USB-Midi ports in the Key 37 and the audio was staying inside Abletons mixer. I believe this is a new thing for the Key 37 and hopefully this gets added to previous MPCs via Firmware. But basically, when you're in Standalone mode on the Key 37, you can plugin your USB cable that it came with to the computer, and the computer will recognize two Key 37 midi ports from the USB.
