A quick video on how I repaired that Akai MPK249. Basically, the USB connector was destroyed. I replaced it and now works like a charm. #Akai #MPK249 #repair

So I got a desoldering pump and a new connector and I managed to get the old one out and the new one in. I'm not great at soldering and it certainly wasn't the cleanest job, but I managed to get it in without any of the contacts touching. When I plug it into my laptop it powers on but the backlight is very dim. If I use a power adapter the lights are bright and everything appears to work as it should, but either way it won't recognize it as a usb device or transmit midi data. I'm wondering if perhaps I somehow fried that part of the circuit board when taking out the old part? Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks!

This could be one of the capacitor on the side of the usb connector.

Is there a wattage requirement for the soldering iron? I got a 30w but the solder on the board doesn’t liquify at all when I hold the tip against it. This is my first time soldering though, so I’m probably doing something wrong.
@ThePhilStudio2 жыл бұрын
You would find it easier with something like a Weller soldering station. 60-85W will do the job. Adjustable temp are really useful. I usually set it around 750-800f depending on the job.

Any experience with replacing the USB connector on an akai mini 2?

My usb port just got damaged today, its wobbly but not all the way broken. I have no experience soldering, do you think I am able to fix it myself? I will come back to let you know how I do.
@ThePhilStudio3 жыл бұрын
I highly suggest you practice a bit your soldering skill a bit before. Soldering the 4 pins is not that much hard but the process of unsoldering can be. Just be really careful and gentle during the process and it should be fine. Good luck!

Do you know how to remove the knob that is next to the display? I cant seem to remove it.
@ThePhilStudio2 жыл бұрын
Carefully pry with a flat headed screw driver and make sure there is no set screw or that it isn't glued since you could damage the circuit.
@LarrickOwnz2 жыл бұрын
@@ThePhilStudio There is no screw that holds it together. I thought you could be able to just pull the knob off but it doesn't work like that. It seems like it's glued.

Is there a possibility for a link that could show me a good usb connector?

Do I need a desoldering pump to do this?
@ThePhilStudio3 жыл бұрын
A desoldering pump will definitly help. You may do it with desoldering copper thread if you're good with it.

where’d you get the new usb, i have the same issue just don’t know what usb connector to get
@peb98406 ай бұрын
nvm i found it in ur comments, hopefully i dont have trouble desoldering!!
@ThePhilStudio6 ай бұрын
@@peb9840 That's great! Watch out, desoldering is a bit harder than I thought since the four pads are fragile and the ground pads need a lots of heat.

Thanks a lot for the how to! Mine broke too! Akai MPK 249. Where did you get your new USB port from? Is it a standard part or an AKAI part? This happens to many people. If this is an AKAI 'professional equipment what's the normal stuff like? Badly made device! NEVER BUYING AKAI AGAIN!
@ThePhilStudio3 жыл бұрын
The connector is a USB chassis connector and is really common in most machine. :)

What is the liquid that you sprayed on called?
@ThePhilStudio3 жыл бұрын
This is called ''Contact 2000'' which is a contact cleaner for electronic. If you wants to clean the board after a soldering job, the best would be to use some ''Flux Remover'' or the ''Contact Cleaner''.

@@ThePhilStudio Would WD40 work as well or no?
@ThePhilStudio3 жыл бұрын
@@brandonhamilton370 personnaly I have never used WD40 for electronic. It's more a product for mechanic stuff. I guess you would have to try it. Be really careful because I'm not sure if it conductive and also avoid contact with plastic casing or parts. Let me know if you try it and get good result.
