Wow. Thank you for showing your machine. The reel to reel machines really are the elusive Gods of the video recorders. There is something very relaxing and nostalgic when viewing a pair of spinning reels. Congratulations. A lot of searching, money, repair, restoration and maintenance is needed to own such a working relic. My respects. Show it off, enjoy it. Keep it clean, demagnetized, lubricated and maintained. Above all else, keep it. Do not sell it.

Looks like that machine is in outstanding condition for its age. Nice original Akai reels and adapters, no ugly labels or owner's marks. Hope it goes to a museum someday. Great camera work btw.

Wow! Video on 1/4" inch tape! It's amazing how they could record a video signal on that!
@wrtlpfmpf3 жыл бұрын
Actually 1/4 inch for video wasn't that uncommon. There were several Japanese formats directly using that. Then if you look at half inch consumer formats, some only used half of the width of the tape so your could "turn over" the tape to double the capacity. With Quartercam there even was a professional quarter inch format.

Had a couple of Roberts 770X and Akai 1800 machines in the day. Never got to see one of those. What a thing of beauty. I guess it was meant to compete with the 1/2" machine from Sony and others in the educational and smaller industrial markets. The smaller tape and the ability to use longer reels smoked the machines of the day.

that pretty cool, until very recently i had no idea reel to reel video recorders existed except for in broadcast studios and such, in the consumer market had only ever seen audio only units.

This VTR is stunning! By the way, can standard NAB adapters be used with these 10.5'' metal video reels or do you need some special adapters for them?
@dutchflyingpilot Жыл бұрын
No special adapters needed, regular NAB's are just fine. Not as pretty as the original Akai's though..

Maybe the amazing part is that in the 1980s, they actually made a video format that used 1/4" take. QuarterCam was a professional format.

🤨 it looked like you had a problem with the analog meters - the audio m. part worked and the video m. looked dead (should have deflected in response to video signal) ?
@dutchflyingpilot6 жыл бұрын
The video level meter works just fine; it reads input levels only. So nothing wrong here.

Did it use chrome or cobalt tape? I assume it wouldn't record on ferric tape? How about hi bias EE open reel tape. Is that black bar creeping up the screen due to camera's shutter speed? It looks like 7.5 ips or maybe 9.6 ips like a type c. Sure is cool.
@dutchflyingpilot9 жыл бұрын
+Scott Strang Each brand and model tape is slightly different. The best tape might be the one referenced in the recorder owner's manual (in this case the AKAI VT-series tapes). Bias and equalization for the advised tape is set to optimal and the risk of damaging the video heads is greatly reduced. It's best to stick with that if you can. Although modern tapes tend to have less noise, have a higher frequency response and less drop-outs, the hardened coating will ruin the Akai's softer ferrite video heads in no time. So be very careful if you are gonna use 'regular' audio tape. The black bar is due to the camera's shutter speed; It's not in perfect sync with the recorder. Also the recorder's speed is a little bit off, hence the rolling bar. We are dealing with Stone Age technology here..

It ran at 11.25 ips. I used to have one, donated it to a museum. I used Radio Shack audio tape, this was made from video tape that was not quite up to pro spec. It was highly calendared (polished) and worked great on the Akai. BTW, ferrite is not soft, it's a crystalline form of iron, it is harder than steel, but is brittle. I shattered a pair once trying to adjust the slip rings with the head motor running and caught the servo sensor post when my screwdriver slipped.
@montefullmer11206 жыл бұрын
is the tape speed 11.25ips? I have it's little brother, being the Roberts1000 Audio/Video unit, where the video works. wondering where one can get more 1/4" video tape. I only have one 5inch reel. Good luck and THX
@dutchflyingpilot6 жыл бұрын
Correct. For the US model it's 11.25ips. For the CCIR type it's 23.85cm/sec. Both plus or minus 0,7%.For tapes I suggest ebay. That Roberts really looks cool! Never seen one in action.

Incredible picture for a 1/4" machine. Too bad they didn't develop it further...instead of VHS, we might have ended up with something much smaller.

Very nice, but obviously a recent dub from DVD. I'd like to see how the original camera would have done. Another thought: Although the format is beautiful enough to watch a movie on, the frequency of artifacts would be a real shame for amateur filmmakers.
@spacemissing Жыл бұрын
A bent reel flange is bad enough on a normal machine. On this one it would be a serious problem! Those Akai NAB adapters are a pain to use. For my X-330D I bought TASCAM ones that can stay on the reel tables. Much easier.

weird, those reels are too close that will cause problems unless you have 5,000 to spend on exactly straight metal reels for every tape you have. looks silly.
