Akala is an intellectual rap legend, his book Natives: Race and Class In The Ruins of Empire is a must-read. I've got to say his fire in the booth part 4 is something else but if you are interested in more of these, the one Wretch 32 and Avelino did together is amazing as well.

Great reaction guys.Akala is not only an MC,but an activist,Professor,Author, poet, also teaches in Oxford University etc.His Fire in the booth are legendaries and so as his singles but you wouldn’t hear about them in Radios etc,so as other Conscious rappers in the UK like Lowkey,Mic Righteous etc all of whom have no labels and own their own Masters and none of their music is played on Radio stations as they’re just to woke but the industry and radio stations would rather play Wap by Cardi B etc check out Lowkeys’ - Obamanation- Ahmed also his fire in the booths and also Mic Righteous.Listening to these artists spit facts and knowledge is just 🔥🔥🔥

Akala!!!!! This guy, I love him. He's hella smart as well. Look more into him in your own time, aside from music he talks a lot about socioeconomic/political issues in UK and is so articulate with his words. He's Ms Dynamites (half?) brother. She was popular back in the day for doing Garage music. 💜

I'm really enjoying your comments through this video. Akala is great at making you think. I do think though that though he's saying we can't avoid the racial context - for example being a rapper means you have to chase money, you have to not be educated. That's why Akala is great - he presents a different vision of what we (people of colour) could project onto everyone else. Hence the callbacks to history! Love your reaction

Thank you guys. I've heard this song for almost a decade but something you said sparked off a train of thought I don't think I ever had... If someone commits a crime, they get jailed. What if they learn their lesson? Who's going to employ an 'ex-convict'? Very few. So they reoffend. Then you get those statistics rammed down your throat. 30% reoffend within a year. 'Career criminals' they're called. What else would you do though? Food for thought. 🤔

About the bomber story, You should check out the sci-fi show Battle Star Galactica (2003-09) and in particular season:3 ep1 "Occupation", really clever , puts the viewer into a position where you are forced to look through the eyes of a suicide bomber (he is one of the "good guys", no that the show exactly has good guys everyone is flawed, partly why its so great). But the Humans are being held captive by an A.I. Sentient Robot race(cylons) and the only way they can fight back is with suicide bombs and other similar tactics. It shows the mindset of how someone gets to that stage, but also the viewer is forced to almost cheer for the suicide bomber. Really brave piece of writing, was made only a few years after the WTC(01) I am actually amazed it was allowed to be broadcast. Great series explores some REALLY tough questions, they touch on racism , but again present it in a way that removes the viewer from this world and portrays the futility of it for all to see. This is just a couple of mega deep subjects they explore in brilliant ways that re frame out of our context into another context, but retain the essence of whatever they are writing about. Series 1 is something EVERYONE should watch and relate to current times. The level of paranoia in series 1 is a stark warning and has so many parallels to everything that has happened in the last 5 years , but in particular the last 2

Money is a token. The money-based economy is a token economy. The token has no tangible value on its own. It is just a printed sheet or a coin. It is only worth what society believes it is worth. Hence, a dollar in 1920 was 'worth' more in terms of what it could buy, than a dollar in 2021. People who hoard money are no different from someone who might hoard car wash tokens. Both are insane. It isn't the money that is important, it's what you use the money to do.

super fucked in Cali. I mean until recently the problem was to become a fire fighter you needed an EMS certificate. But you couldn't get that with a criminal record. Fire houses have always said they would happily hire former inmates who have experience fighting fires. I know Kamala is the first black VP and that is truly amazing due to her race and gender; however, she refused to push for changes. Now if you've fought fires whilst in jail they'll bypass the no criminal background requirement and they're able to obtain the EMS certificate. Canada's fucked too, we treat our indigenous people just as fucked. But the glaring difference imo is the way your criminal justice system operates vs ours

The bit where you're saying 'devils advocate'...you missed the context. You're correct that certain rap sells, but Akala is pointing out that the reason it sells is because of a multitude of factors. It shouldn't sell as it feeds the narrative that the government want to portray about the black community.

Yh but hes defending the rappers that rap about violence because it sells. If you make a song and someone said to say this because it will triple your income you would do it. Whats the problem is the industry not the artists themselves they are just pawns
