A few notes for you (I have a SM server mobo as my desktop machine): a) The mobo looks for active fans at startup, if you unplug any of them after boot, it forces all the others to maximum RPM. This is a fail-safe in the event a critical fan dies. b) The BIOS controls the fan speed by default. Some BIOSes have a server/workstation fan setting, workstation being the quieter of the two. I don't recall fancontrol working with the SM mobo. c) The beeps at startup when you were using on-board VGA are normal startup beeps duh-duh---duh----------dee. d) Server mobos take FOREVER to post anytime you change the hardware/plug/unplug something.

most newer power supplies have dual 8 pin cpu power if u get a higher wattage model. as some of the current model consumer grade mobo now have dual 8 pin cpu power for overclocking.

I'll get into this more in one of the later videos, but the motherboard actually has two 8pin sockets and two 4pin. So I'd need a pretty weird PSU to get all that. Even this super micro one doesn't have all the connectors. I think the two 4pins could be "optional" but I would rather have them connected. If they are optional then it will just mean lower power throughput through all the power cables.

When you first powerup the motherboard with +5VSB you need to wait 1 minute for the BMC to boot up. BIOS will wait until the BMC starts up... So wait a bit.

I worked with a similar MB a few years ago, here are some thoughts you may find useful: 1. The long boot sequence is normal, especially if you changed something, takes quite a while for the BIOS to detect and set the new hardware configuration. Also those beeps are not all error codes, some are preset "reports" firing up as the BIOS switches from one configuration to another. For example when you insert a PCI video card it will first beep for detecting it in the slot and than one more time when it saves the new hardware config (same thing when you remove said card, but the beeps sequence may be different). 2. Those CPUs have higher thermal tolerance than their equivalent PC generation, 70C is well within their normal operating range, you should start getting worried only if they go over 90C. 3. The original case cooling isn't designed just for the CPUs, some of the onboard components also require passive cooling, so in the new case make sure you have a constant uni-directional air flow passing over the entire board. 4. If you're gonna use that many hard drives you should consider a dual-PSU build, it's more reliable in the long run and probably cheaper than one big enough to provide that much power.

Hi All, Nice progress video, exotic hardware does get tricky, but also need to remember these parts are used in enterprise / server senario where they are stored on air conditioned rooms and the proper case has LOUD high volume multiple case fans, under those conditions i can understand why the BIOS would not need much control over the fan speed etc because the ambient air in those server rooms would be cold aircon eg 12-20 degrees C All you need is software to make use of all of those cores and processing power :) Regards George

My current PC (since a few days) is a Supermicro CSE-815 1U Server since I needed a motherboard for two Xeon E5540s I got for around 5€ and the case with PSU, motherboard, risers and coolers was just around 70€ on Ebay. But because of noise reduction, it's currently missing all it's original fans and it's original PSU. I did it similar to you with just mounting regular fans ontop on the 1U heatsinks but with cable ties and, apart from that, connecting a regular 350W PSU with makeshift adapters for the two 8 pin power sockets. Also, my 750Ti had to be a bit modified and cut and is now just sticking up out of the server because it would be too wide for the PCIe Risers. It works fine as of right now, let's hope it'll stay this way

Dealing with server grade or high end workstation hardware all day long, the first point I’ll make is that although there are “standards” no manufacturer seems to stick to them (Dell, HP I’m looking at you here). So piecing together hardware is always going to be a *cough* fun time :) On a side note, I’ve just finished building a new workstation at home out of an old Dell T7500 (similar-ish age) But I had the benefit of having a “matching” hardware at least for the basics (mobo, PSU, cpu, etc). But it does render Premiere quite well :)

you can go lower then ambient on heatpipe air cooler the thing is heatpipe is designed this way, that fluid which is inside is evaporating, hence cooling to evaporation temperature, which is most cases below ambient temperature you are not cooling by passing heat around metal, but by removing heat by evaporation, which can cool below ambient see for yourself - boil water on gas (no, not electric). Flame would in range of at least 400C (as it can easily melt copper), you can get parts of pot to this temperature, but what is touching water directly won't get hotter then water evaporation point, no matter hot how your ambient would be (you can make ambient 200C and still water won't ever cross 100C unless you will raise pressure here it same thing This was my first surprise when I switched to heatpipe cooler my room was good 35C (I have had constant puddle of sweet below my chair) and CPU temp reported by CPU itself was 20C and by temperature sensor on MotherBoard (directly below CPU) was 30C

The fans going faster in the other connector is a failsafe mode. If a critical fan dies, it ramps all the other fans up to full speed to compensate that.

I actually have a similar server: two E5-2680 (16 cores 32 threads too,) 128GB RAM (and it is still a half loaded motherboard allowing me to go 256GB,) 8 hot swap bays with 6 drives installed, on an Asus Z9PE-D16C/2L motherboard. I am using it as a general purpose workstation now so it has an AMD R9 380 graphics card, an 1TB NVMe SSD boot drive (I modded my BIOS for that,) and an Asus Xonar DGX sound card. I have to use the expensive Windows 10 Pro Workstation to make it work properly with 128GB RAM. In an future upgrade I will remove the hot swap bays (since being a workstation that 1TB NVMe SSD is enough) and upgrade the graphics to a used GTX 1070 or better.

Have you tried reseating the cpu's ... In my 13 years at hp I've seen many a memory problem caused by bad CPU contact on big old servers especially after they've been removed from the rack for servicing.

there are no "cpu fan" headers cause servers dont run temperature based fan courves, they are usually always on max setting to efficiently cool the cpus and the rest of the internals

That’s not entirely true. Most Supermicro boards don’t generally specify what header should be used for the CPUs. You get to pick the header. I have several different Supermicro boards and none of them explicitly states which header should be for the CPU.

I actually had a similar problem with a Gigabyte PC motherboard with the VGA connection, the internal VGA did not output any video at all but memory was assigned to it when activated in BIOS.

Nice work! I also own a SuperMicro board, it's an X8DTN+ EEATX board that was also unfortunately damaged in shipping - the corner is bent and the dual gigabit ethernet controller is dead. Anyways, here's a couple of things to note about it that might also apply to yours: A) You can use literally any standard PSU on it. I used to use an RM850i Corsair unit with two 8pin CPU cables, but I also got a VS550 working with the 8 pin and a dual molex to 8pin adapter. B) The weird beeps before the final POST OK beep is the computer registering connected USB devices. Depending on the device it'll generate a high or low pitch beep. I don't know why. C) My board is older (2010 1366 Xeons) but I doubt much had changed by the time yours came out. D) My heatsink setup was worse. I bought two Cooler Master Hyper 103 CPU coolers for my board but they required their own backplates. To install them I had to take the entire retention mount systems for the CPUs out to fit the coolers in. It worked, but it was dodgy as all hell. E) EEATX boards suck. Plenty of space for GPUs and 18 RAM slots are nice...but they are HELL to find a case for. I never did. F) Respects paid.

hi guy. i don't have time right now to watch your videos but just wanted to mention its really important to replace the CMOS battery!!! When they start to go bad there are a bunch of problems like disabled Ram Sockets and crashing issues among other things. I was using Ubuntu Mate as main OS for a while but it had very slow boot times. Switched over to Manjaro Mate and booting is much faster. Had to set boot to UEFI in Bios. I disabled hyperthreading in Bios because it works better without it. Anyways i am using an old Dell server with a graphics card as my desktop computer (not running as a virtual machine) System Specs: Dell R410 Server Manjero Mate 64 bit Processors: 2 Intel Xeon X5570@ 2.93Ghz (4 cores each) Graphics: GeForce GT 730/PCIe/SSE2 with Proprietary Nvidia 455.38 Driver installed. RAM: 32GB And Yes of coarse Compiz Window Manager I wish someone told me this stuff when i started out. All the Best !!!

Older server Mobos were not designed for dynamic fan speed. The fan speed was expected to be full. Because a server farm is going to have the airflow to deal with it, nd noise level was not an issue.

Depends on what you're running, there are modern Chinese motherboards (complete with USB 3 and M.2 PCI-E) working nicely with the E5-2680 I have in my main PC running Windows 10. The issue for this build is more that it's a dual CPU in a server-specific motherboard designed for a rackmount, which it presents its own config issues...

CPUS tempt to run REALLY hot in bios, as they are at the max powerstate and voltage usually , i had my tiny apu (A8 3870) run super hot in bios (close to 70) , but when i booted into a linux live cd, it was sitting at a comfy 30c

My Supermicro X10DAX makes the same beeps. I can confirm what others have said; you're OK. Also, I wouldn't stress out about CPU temperatures below 85C. 70C at full load seems fine to me.

My SuperMicro X10 board has a jumper to enable or disable the ASPEED IPMI device's video controller. Also, the IPMI is responsible for fan control, with multiple fan control options: Standard, Full, Heavy IO, and Optimal. With my low noise fans, I had to use IPMITool in Linux to adjust the lower thresholds for the fans, or else it would repeatedly panic and spin them up to 100%. EDIT: silly me, commenting before reaching the end of the video. Looks like you found a bunch of the things already.

I have a supermicro 2u box that physically broke afew months back, tbh after see the problems you had with that motherboard, I kinda don't want to fix my box. Use pcie riser to connect the cards. There are cables to make x16, or powered risers like on gpu miners, to do 1x link (card works fine, data bus reduced). Card will have to be mounted wonky tho.

You don't need VGA or video out! The BIOS on those models have serial support (both COM1, COM2 and SoL), GRUB as well, and Linux too! If you are into BSD, that works as well, the BTX bootloader too! COM1 or COM2 can be passed to SoL or you can use SoL directly if your bootloader and kernel supports it (GRUB2 does, as does Linux and the BIOS). SoL can be reached using ipmitool or using supermicro's IPMI/LOM/Whatever web interface, it has a Java Applet for that. Those often suck, but are better than no console. Alternatively, you can use the COM1 port or the COM2 pinheader for local access. The BIOS will detect that and switch to text mode automatically. All input and output is available, without VGA. Installer disks support this too. (well, Windows doesn't)

if you can solder, you can make a decent little fan controller that will sense the temperature and adjust fan speed accordingly. allso if i had those kinda heatsinks, a push-pull fan config would be something i would not leave out. not hard to do it, and its a whole different world.

Aha Welcome to enterprise equipment. It's all specific built. Fans run much faster and match the heat sinks. Go water cooling with high end you have room. Usually, you have a board to use multiple power supply and in 4u, you may have as many as 5 power supply of 430W... And the fans are supposed to be super loud until the bmc (IPMI) starts.

Many servers come with external monitor output disabled for security reasons. You're supposed to just be using the built-in networked KVM feature. Normally, that has a setting somewhere to enable video out if you still need it.

Your life would be a lot easier if you buy into SuperMicro as a complete solution. Pick your motherboard and find a compatible chassis on the site. Or buy them together as a Super Server. The power, cooling, and front panel IO are all taken care of. They use a consistent pinout for the front panel that just comes as one ribbon cable to the panel. So much easier than fiddling with 2-pin headers. If you do that, it will make these piecemeal solutions that get cobbled together seem ridiculous in comparison. I speak from experience doing things the hard way. They do a good job with integration, and the pricing is fair. Just go with it. :-)

Hey, We use in our company Supermicro servers. Reset the bios and upgrade the firmware for IPMI and BIOS that should help with IPMI. Never try to change sething of impi using windows app this fill mess up config of IPMI and you will need to reset the bios. Also IPMI View app sometimes crashes.

for that server mobo you just have to get a modular atx psu with the possibility of using 2 8 pin cpu power connectors because in here each cpu requires it's own power connector because they pull quite a lot of power

Hmm.. I wonder if fancontrol can poke the i2c bus on this board to give you manual control? I've done this on other server/embedded boards and set auto fan control this way before.

While those CPU coolers are not the best design out there, you really don't need a true fixed connection between the aluminium and the copper pipes as all the heat will travel though the heatpipes anyway (still not the best setup on those coolers though as the heatpipes are way spread out). As for the VGA space issue, you could always just get some cheap Asetek based CLCs and mount them using the narrow 2011 mounting kit (store.asetek.com/), single 120mm radiator CLCs are fairly cheep these days as some are starting to age quite a bit (Zalman and Antec will be some of the better choices for cheaper old CLCs). Then just hook them up to the back if the 4u case has 120mm slots there or to the 120mm fans behind the HDDs. Should cool well and be far more space efficient for that board.

That motherboard's "optimal" fan modes are like the Msi "silent cooling until you need it" shit I got a 2080ti tro and it got to 80 degrees doing NOTHING CAUSE THE FANS WEREN'T TURNING. So I had to scramble to go get the Msi afterburner beta that let you control fan curves and now it's fixed

For the On-board graphics, I wonder if the VGA connector may be unusual for server boards and be there only to support Intel HD Graphics, which means that unless the CPU has Intel HD Graphics (Xeon Chips do not) it will not work. EDIT: I see later in the video you mention you did get it working a few times, so probably a failed on-board Graphics chip.

SuperMicro is such a pain to work on. I had a board that I had to move a jumper on just so it would stop using on board graphics and use my graphics card instead. It wouldn't let me change the setting in the BIOS

Conclution: Buy a «better» motherboard and make sure to have a PSU with the right cables. (EVGA has dual 8 PIN CPU) I have server videoes on my channel, if you want to watch some!
