_Nice._ Upgrade vids are always fun. Did the exact same thing popping out a panel on my recent Win98 build, ha. Did not even notice until that moment of "why is there blood on this card? Oh." Decided to just get rid of spinning hard drives on that build as well, replaced with SD cards. I figure if I'm needing a beefy HDD that isn't period-correct anyway, SD interfaces/cards are so cheap and convenient it makes too much sense to ignore. However, I'll always kinda miss the sounds a spinning drive makes, that's for sure.
@TechTangents6 жыл бұрын
For the first video of this computer I was somewhat locked in to using a spinning disk drive. This Seagate was actually a Goodwill find that I had got before the WD drive I originally put in there. I felt that the packing wasn't "90's" enough on this one so I got the other drive after. So I figured I may as well use both drives anyway. Eventually I plan on getting an SD adapter and modifying a blank drive plate to access it from the front so I can easily swap the bootable drive for other OS's.

@nilswegner28816 жыл бұрын
adam fitzpatrick I don't want to insult anyone but what you wrote is just plain incorrect, and makes you sound like you've never seen an IDE cable an a floppy drive cable side by side. An IDE cable has 40 or 80 wires, while a floppy drive cable has only 34. Also IDE is a whole different story on how it works, while the floppy drive gets controlled via the floppy drive cable, the IDE hard drive only transmits and receives data over the IDE cable. I know it does not have anything to do with your bleeding but it just annoys me that people don't do research before they write something

About your GamePort issue on your SoundBlaster Live! The reason why the Gravis GamePad Pro did not work... it did work! You used the wrong mode. On the back of the GamePad there is a switch for legacy Player 1, P2 or Gravis IP. On GrIP the Gamepad sends weird commands back to the gameport which look like random button mashing. I recommend you to use either the legacy mode or install the GrIP Software. And I recommend the Gravis Profiler of the Terminator Gamepad. It seems more stable under 98 than the original 95 software. For the SideWinder... no clue. My SW ForceFeedback Pro doesn't like it at all, if there are more than one Gameport or Soundcards in the system. Getting this thing to work in 98/ME is some kind of magic. It works on my Packard Bell and I have no frikkn clue why. But it might have to do something with MIDI capabilities since the SideWinders use MIDI for advanced commands to the peripherial and the system. So, good luck getting SideWinders to work. :D

Your videos bring me back to a great time in my life, when the computer revolution was in full swing and I was the only one in my area with a computer and internet access! All my friends wouldnt follow suit until much later, after 2000! I was literally the only one of all my friends who not only owned a computer but had access to the internet back in 1998! I actually had a computer since 1986, but didn't do anything with that one outside of word processing documents for class in high school and maybe play some very basic DOS games like Leisure Suit Larry. I finally upgraded to a new computer in 1995! I started with Windows 3.1 but soon upgraded that to Windows 95, then finally Windows 98. I kept using Win 98 until I bought another new system in 2002 and was forced to use Windows XP, which I ended up using all the way until 2010!

@@XCVGVCX yup even in modern pc's slightly misshapen card slots are still a problem but mainly with low-budget cases or niche expansion cards I even had to cut a cheap case because the slot 7 was literally only half as large in the backplane so the nub at the end of the bracket wouldn't slide into the metal underneath the mobo SteelScooter is correct though often if a card is out of spec loose screws might help but I would recommend actually doing the "no bracket" method due to it only being an internal usb card with no external connectors perhaps with lumps of hot glue or thick wires soldered to the card and back plate to allow slight adjustments just make sure to only connect the wires to ground or cut traces to the unpopulated rear connectors

Its so hilarious that Gigabit adapters are a thing in Windows 98 as it can't even take advantage of a 100Mb card. As far as the drivers on 98 its not unsurprising there are drivers for windows 98 as despite being able to get PCI gigabit cards brand new right now, the chipset powering these network adapters originally came out in the early 2000s when Windows 98 was very much still relevent. For example the GA311 in the video has the RTL8169SC chip. Its data sheet had its last revision back in 2005 and Realtek even hosts Mac drivers dating back to 2003.

1. Love the library! I've used/played about 90% of what you showed. 2. Ouch with the cut! I was a field tech from 1995-2006 before starting my own IT firm. My fingers have the scars of those burred aluminum cases. 3. I loved Win98 as it was much more stable than Win95 (Especially Win98SE). It still wasn't a true OS yet at that time though since Windows was still a graphical environment overlayed on top of DOS. 4. With the SCSI card, are you planning to make a SCSI RAID setup? 5. Nice period PC!

Nice, I was wondering about how this PC was doing since the last video. Great stuff as always.

note: If this happens (7:41), just ignore it and install the driver from the Driver Disc, because Windows wants you to find the driver manually by searching the .inf files of the driver, not the installer (.exe), which takes a lot of time and more edit, i thought Windows 98 only supports max. 137GB partition size?

The USB card is supposed to be a tight fit. If not second tight it can cause arc flash and if the outlet your computer is plugged into is connected to an AFCI breaker a small arc from any cards or wires can trip the circuit breaker

It’s happened to me before when I installed a 56k modem card in my machine and it was loose causing arc flash which tripped the circuit breaker on my power strip

Ah, Driver. Both it and Driver 2 were the banes of my existence when I was a kid. Couldn't make it past the tutorial in the first one, and we rented Driver 2 to have some fun with that and while it was definitely the better game by far there was some mission in Rio that was stupidly hard to get past and we ended up giving up on it. Didn't even know it was on PC, either.

i love seeing this machine run only i think one component to make it period correct is missing and that is one of those hideous and inconvenient pc desk with those flimsy sliding keyboard trays. that would complete the experience.

Early USB implementations especially on AT boards usually didn’t have what we’d consider the correct pinout today on the header. I have an EPoX socket 7 board with an Apollo VPX chipset and its USB header is basically cut in half and stacked compared to what we’d consider normal.

What a trip down memory lane, think my first computer I bought was the acer sx/25 with 140 meg hd and 4mb of ram, with prodigy and maybe 9600k modem..then the Gateway 2000 p/66 tower, I think was the first gen Pentium chip, that system had 8 megs of ram i think and 500 megish hard drive 14.4 modem if i recall, was around 1994 ish era? spent 2700.00 on it then sold it for 2300.00 to pay off the loan i had on it. First pc I ever used was the apple 2 back in 1981,82 era. I feel old haha

my first windows pc was a 486 with 4mb Ram and 1x speed cd-rom drive and soundcard of creative labs. I remember that my parents in 1991 payed (10.000 BFR => 250 euro's now) for the cd-rom and the soundcard alone. the OS was win .3.11
