For those who think the problem is related to the scan disk errors being thrown about the HDD, watch the first part of this video where I put in the previous boot drive for this computer and get the same error: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXLOY4yKbbOqecU

Very late reply but for anyone experiencing these kinds of issues: It's really best to try diagnosing the supposedly failing drive in another machine. If it comes up fine, that immediately suggests another hardware fault in the original PC. i.e. PSU, RAM, mobo, all sorts of things can cause it. Even a dodgy IDE cable!

Now I'm remembering some hack I used to use back in the W95/W98 days. I'd delete all the .pnf files, then there was some registry tree I would delete which would "remove" all the system devices (presumably I would already have all the .inf files in the inf directory. Reboot the system and it would re-register all the devices. Of course it's been probably 15 years since I've installed a physical W98 system (never got into gaming either).

I've had this same issue with a PCI USB card I bought off eBay a while back, based on an NEC chipset. As soon as the drivers loaded on my Pentium II, it resulted in an instant crash, and from that point on, rebooting into Windows would crash at the splash screen. Attempting to use it on a far more modern Windows 7 PC resulted in a "hardware malfunction" blue screen. I did get a replacement and that one works nicely. I think I could probably just stuff the bad one (which they didn't ask for back) into the oven for a moment and "cook" it back to life :P

I think there are a couple of reasons to at least have a 98 partition. 98 allows you to play late DOS games natively. My personal reason for keeping Windows 98 is because MechWarrior 3 just doesn't run on anything with the NT Kernel. No clue why.
@FeelingShred5 жыл бұрын
it's such a shame that Dosbox' source code was never released so the community could polish it, some late-era DOS games (the heavy, SVGA ones) run like dogshit on it... Do you know what would be the virtual machine solution that requires the least amount of disk space to run? I would only need it for DOS games.

I found 10 voodoo 3 3000 last summer with some broken caps, ans none of them gave me problems under windows 95 even with some stress (ocing them, running 3Dmark 99, etc ...) I don't think these caps are all that important
@TechTangents6 жыл бұрын
You have 10 cards so you would have had more experience then. I've only had two data points to work with: Card with no cap == does not work Card with cap == does work I'm sure it will also depend on which cap is missing. Lots of devices state they need capacitors in the datasheets. Sometimes you can get away with omitting some of them, but not always.
@DxDeksor6 жыл бұрын
Well I had every kind of card, some even had the complete row missing. However depending of how well the chips on the card were manufactured I guess it can have an impact. But that could be a completely different reason than the card itself, maybe the AGP port was just not clean enough Or 98 really didn't like that bad sector with that configuration. It happened to me that bad hdds could lead to weird issues even though the installation behind it was fine. But just like you, it feels better when the hardware is "complete" hence why I recapped every single card I had
@HappySlappyFace6 жыл бұрын

Dont get me wrong stating about scandisk being not the issue its always a good thing just to do it anyway occasional to remove the tag set by the registry when booting and windows starts just to be safe because eventually it will come up with drive issues and then start corrupting the drive if windows does not repair clusters correctly .. good video though -- there are applications that can regenerate the drive if the sector are damaged this does not mean the drive is failing just means the filing system is corrupted!

Hard drives killed by Windows?? No waaay!! (sarcasm) Funny that different versions of Windows that I tried to install told me that my hard disk was dead... I'm using Linux for 2 years now (Xubuntu 16.04) and I still use the same disk. It doesn't make all the noise that is very noticeable from Windows computers and I can read all my files. Some problems happen when I try to write big chunks of data on it, but still I can read all my mp3 collection and already installed game collection just fine on the NTFS partition. The EXT4 partition I created (on the same disk) never had write issues, ever. All hail Linux I guess.

LOL. Dude just randomly pulls the most stable and most backwards compatible AMD Athlon system with the only CPU+Chipset combo that isn't plagued by hw bugs or shitty drivers. SiS7xxx-series, Thoroughbred Athlon "1800+" i.e. it runs at 1.5Ghz. And the chipset is actually seriously fast with dual-channel DDR1, a SiS76x or maybe the one before it. SiS735 :D And then, goes against the most popular trend of the time, which is to try and fit the fastest GeForce 2/3/4... or the fastest Radeon R100/R250/RV300-series GPU possible into it, and just goes ahead and pairs it with a goddamn 3DFx VooDoo 4 4500. Essentially creating high-end PC Workstation-level performance with a low-end budget. Just before AMD64 came along and nuked the whole PC desktop (performance) market to hell, both the gamer rig and the ultimate hacker rig are in an exceptional case for the time are completely indistinguishable from each other, and only those with a keen eye have ever spotted this for what must be the most ultimate of the most ultimate universal retro-rigs, ever? Only if you update 3DFx VooDoo4 with 3DFx VooDoo5. :D
