I used to have an SM58 and it was alright but the AKG D5 I had at the time was better sounding, the SM58 had a more muddy sound whereas the D5 had much better high midrange clarity which really brought out the detail in the voice.

When you moved from mic to mic, the D770 had less breath noise without attenuating the high frequency, so score 1 for the D770. On the other hand, the frequency response on the SM58 was more balanced, with the D770 sounding a little boxy to me, so score 1 for the SM58. I think I prefer the SM58 overall.

Been using SM58 for about 2 years. It's indestructible, it really is, but the sound is just waaayyyy overrated. I mean like holy-sh*t category of overrated sound. It has a name, that's it. It's like Marlboro of mics. Like a status symbol or something, although it's not really that good as the legend tells and you can get a way better thing for less money.

I was excited to get my first 58 then quickly disappointed as I realized it does NOT suit my voice at all, and also isn't good for mic'ing instruments... I think a 57 is better than a 58 just because you can use it in more situations, like amps and kick drums. 58 is a good live mic but for studio work it's disappointing imo

My AKG D5 is rather good too, better than the SM58, and cheaper too! The SM58 has had its day. But there's no way I'm going to come in and see you at Cranbourne Music because you're on the other side of the planet.

AKG cleaner more linear and the SM58 pick up more pops and flows. But... Try to put into the water, fall down, and give to some drunked punk singer :))) SM58 will survive on. The AKG?. I'am not sure oops "shure" :) So for studio and quiet live performances AKG, for all the rest SM58. Best if You buy both of them :) Btw she is so cute :)

good A-B test....should have compared literally together side by side though. Your test came back exactly the same as mine did (I have the D770 looking pretty rugged but still working perfectly)....bought a new 58 and tried them out side by side - all settings on desk at neutral. for me the D770 was faaaar more crisp which is best suited to my treble-tone voice. Took the 58 back and got a refund luckily. Individual voice tones/timbre is also a key factor though I think. Good vid - cheers

I have used both mic's, the SM58 is sounding muffled in comparison with modern designs at or below the 58's price. I'm now using the AKG D5 and find them to be a very good clean sounding mic much better than the 58. Don't get me wrong the 58 is still a good mic but remember a 1960s design.

57 responds to 10hz lower than 58, plus the low end rolls off at a different dB/8va, the response curve is also a different shape so it will colour the sound differently

he is right, sm58 is good to be used as a hammer, what happens is that it doesnt sound so good nowadays, it works, but its not the best sounding mic. there is a lot of mics in the 99$ range that does a better job. unless you want to microwave it, bury it in dirt for 2 years or drop it from an helicopter. thats why i'm getting me an akg D5. also some mics suits some voices better then others.

he D770 had a bit more........for lack of a better word.......SOUL to it when you sang into it. The SM58 is a great mic and has the added advantage that most venues are EQ'd for it but the AKG had a bit more of a "produced" sound which sounded good with your voice. Especially with your style. :) Keep rockin'.

She spent a lot more time presenting SM58 than AKG. AKG D770 is obviously much better, vocals sound more natural without boomines and other problems SM58 users have to take care off. I would pick AKG over Shure any time.

I have both for my voice which is naturally bassy I prefer the AKG it’s got more top end sizzle to balance my tone and cut through the mix. However if your voice is already very tonally balanced the sm58 is plenty good.

other way around imo. 58 already too bassy/muddy, so lower voices get flabbby. The brighter 770 helps balance the lower voice and cut through a mix

I after singed with sm58, My sm86 is so great! And people tend to wonder who is singing when I sing with sm86 and rest people with some cheap wireless set. I also wonder why they never mention EQ benefits with sm58.

i like the sure sm58 strictly because Tommy Shaw and the rest of the Styx band used it during their 1996 return to paradise reunion tour. u could just imagine the type of influence that had over me when i was 10yrs old. ever since then i liked mics with silver ball tops.
