For clarity: Differences in any specific area of the frequency response for both of these headphones Sub/Low Bass, Low Mids, Upper Mids, Treble are quite small and don't make too much difference by themselves (they sound similar to each other). However, in combination they do seem to result in a fairly large difference in overall sound signature. This review is just this one KZbinrs opinion. And in this KZbinrs opinion, the Harman target is the definition of "Neutral" when it comes to a headphones FR. Measurements shown are done using the MiniDSP EARS rig (Not industry standard). The compensation curve being used is the HEQ compensation. This is based off of the Harman curve rather than Diffuse Field. Any headphone that measures correct to the Harman curve should show as flat on this graph. This does not hide any aspect of the FR it presents the info in a different way that is more relevant to the target curve being used. This video was not scripted and thus was a little rambling in places. Opinions were formed by listening tests using reference tracks. FR charts are shown only as a tool to help explain opinions based on listening tests. Opinions stated in this "VS" review are comparative to these two headphones only. For full comparative opinions against other headphones please see the respective full reviews for each headphone.

Quadruple camera guy for audio reviews is born Also for some reason the 361 specs now say titanium coated as well, and I don't remember seeing that initially. So probably just different or cheaper damping Edit: just got my K361 today and can confirm this review is accurate.

Odd. So essentially they are the same product with cosmetic differences. Anything else that justifies the large price difference of over 50% ?
@WheezyTech
@WheezyTech 5 жыл бұрын
@@theinnocent_one Its more than cosmetic differences, unless adding metal and rubber parts to the headband are purely cosmetic to you. The 371 also has a different connector which is much better. The driver *might* be the same but theres clearly differences in internal cup construction or dampening that leads to them sounding different. I think I made a good case fo the 371 being a better headphone but ultimately its up to you if you think its worth it.
@theinnocent_one
@theinnocent_one 5 жыл бұрын
@@WheezyTech what is the response of the cheaper one to EQ ? If the drivers are the same, they can possibly put up with minor changes in response to sound like one another using EQ ? I know that the minor difference in FR is probably due to internal cup design and damping, but driver excursion would probably within tolerances ?

Good take. And agreed. K371 preferred. I can definitely hear the deeper extension, and the slight mid dip. K361 sounds blurry and weak by comparison.

I agree with your comment about sub bass. The main sound of the bass in most music happens between 40hz - 50hz to 250 Hz. When you get down to 20hz. to 40hz. It's not really noticeable on most music, except on certain tracks boosted down there at the bottom of the frequency range.

Great hp reviews, keep it up! I auditioned K371 some time ago and found it way too shouty. They are pretty good cans overall, with great subbass rumble, while not being muddy, and linear mids (except 3k region). But that upper-mid shoutiness is pretty disturbing, I just cannot understand how can over-ear hp sound neutral with that 3k peak. IEM's calibrated with Harman curve may sound balanced and natural (Etymotic ER4XR is one of the best In-ears I ever heard), but they don't trigger our ear's pinna resonance, while over-ears do. Well, that's just my opinion. QC issues is a real thing, tho. One earcup in my pair fixated much worse than another, it broke a seal every time I re-positioned hp's on my head. P.S. Sorry for my grammar, not a native speaker, unfortunately.
@WheezyTech
@WheezyTech 5 жыл бұрын
I agree the 3kHz bump is probably the one blimp on an otherwise excellent mid performance. However, I didn't personally have any problem with it unlike the 361 which is a lot more shouty. I'm only just getting into IEMs but I've heard really good things about the more high end ones. I'm going to try to do more IEM content as I'd like to experience more IEMs myself. Those Etymotic's are out of my current price range though. Thanks for your comment, your English is pretty good, dont worry about it.

Having heard both, I'll give the TL;DR: a bit early. Neither are suited for studio monitoring for mixing. They are, however, well-suited to post-mix review. Neither are flat enough to figure out your mix on without inadvertently mixing down the bass and treble in whatever you're working on. I demoed both of these sets in the store and did quite a bit more extensive listening on the K371 later on. They're interesting, with the K361 having a more pedestrian and friendlier tuning, while the K371 is more... hmm... intense. It has more gain in the treble region, more bass, and in general is less kind to poor recordings. These are definitely headphones that will reveal the tuning of your DAC and amp combo and will tell you when your audio quality is too low. I found them very pleasant to listen to on a Cambridge Audio 2-channel 60W amp's headphone stage, but the V-shaped tuning on that amp really makes them sound a lot more dynamic. Listening on my HiBy R3 Pro Saber goes on to show that, with a more neutral and analytical DAC and amp tuning, you lose a lot of the potential heat from the treble range, the mids become more balanced, and the bass becomes more tame. It's less like you're attending a rave for 1 and more balanced and suited for critical listening. I didn't personally find that there were any songs where it fell flat on its face, but it's not exactly ideal for certain genres like mid-70's to late 80's rock. If you listen to that almost exclusively, then these aren't for you. Try the K361 or a different line altogether. If you like listening to glitch, techno, euro-beat, dubstep, or any other genres that rely on fast-paced beats, lots of bass and lots of treble, then these will be ideal. If you listen to orchestral music, soundtracks, and other traditional instrumentation music, then these are also good for that. I've found that their main crime is one of resolution. They like a lot of it and will not be tamed if the track is poorly mastered, particularly in the midbass. If the midbass is handled poorly then you WILL hear it. It will stand out like a sore thumb and you'll be wondering what in the world is going on. And the problem, and part of the reason why I find it poorly suited to rock from that era, is that a lot of the midbass and even effect pedals into the mids and treble aren't always handled well during recording and mixing and these things WILL find that and tell you all about it. It'll tell you if the musician has gotten too close to their microphone as well. These things have as much detail retrieval in their midbass as other sets have in their treble, and that's incredible. I've not heard anything like it before. They're definitely a challenging headphone and not everyone will love how they sound, but man do you need to find a set to demo. For $130 or so, you'd be hard pressed to find anything as revealing and resolving as those AKG K371. Just be sure to start them off a low volume, because they're more sensitive than you'd expect.

I like my K361, but it has a massive problem. The plastic headband snapped when I was putting the headphones on my head. Now I have to glue them together (for the 3rd time) and hope they work (again). Also, I opened the folding mechanism and realized the headphone has business surviving being folded because it puts repeated strain on the leads which run through it. These headphones need a revision that addresses the build, and then it will truly be stellar.

Watching this makes me wonder if I got a bad K371. Ordered both the K361 and the K371 off Amazon to compare, and I find the low midrange sounding very scooped out on the K371. Guitars and bass guitars sound very buried in the mix on those headphones. Can barely hear what chords are played. The midrange sound noticeably more present on the pair of K361's I got. Prefer the treble on the K371, though. Seems to have a bit more clarity. Tough choice between the two!

It really depends on what you are looking for from a headphone. I find the DT 770 Pro a really enjoyable headphone to listen to, it can be quite bright, it does have a few big peaks in the treble. However its got a good bass performance and overall sound signature is much warmer than the K361 which as I said is a bit hollow and sterile sounding. However I'd say the K361 is flatter or more neutral than the 770, I would choose the K361 over the DT 770 Pro for any analytical work, such as when I'm video editing. Since I got a replacement K371 however, I havent used my DT 770 Pro or my K361. The 371 is basically close to perfect for my tastes for both the video editing and more enjoyable listening such as movies music and video games. I really like the DT 770 Pro, its a fantastic headphone and its very well built. But the K371 I think is technically the better headphone on sound.

I don't think ther K361 sounds more normal, to me the K371 is more netural, more like an HD650. In fact thats a good way of describing them, like an HD650 in mids and treble with slightly more bass. The 361 is a bit too cold and shouty for my tastes. However as the K361 is very forwards in the upper mids and as you want them for tracking vocals, they might put your monitoring a bit more forwards for you. I dunno if thats what you need, if it is then they might be a good choice.

Hmm thats a difficult one, I've never found a good EQ app for mac. Sonarworks is ok but you can only choose from pre defined EQ's for supported headphones. There is an app called eqMac2 that seems ok but if you want a good parametric EQ like Equalizer APO there isnt a good alternative on Mac. There is Rogue Amoeba Soundsource which allows you to host AU or VST plugins for systemwide EQ. But from memory you have to add an individual parametric EQ AU plugin per band and theres no way to create profiles for different headphones which makes it a bit of a pain. That might have changed now. Maybe I'll make a video about this at some point.

@@WheezyTech So much thanks for the review! I Can't wait for deeper video about this issue. I think it is pretty actual for MAC users.

Rolands Briedis You’ve probably found what you need by now, but I’ve had great luck with Boom for Mac. It allows presets and can be fine-tuned in 31-band mode. Most of the effects are just gimmicks, but the Fidelity effect magically makes a lot of muddy headphones/IEMs/speakers sound light-years better. And it’s on sale right now for $12.

I wonder how this compares to 32ohm dt 770. Both are 32ohm closed backs with pleather pads and should work well with weak sources. Not many headphones like that I can think of. Maybe takstar pro82 and cal. By description it sounds like both have the best bass and subbass out of all sub 200usd closed headphones

Thats another good call, I do have a 250 Ohm and apparently the 32 has a very similar sound sig to the 250, I know that the 80 is a bit different tho. I love my DT 770, I would take it over the K361 for casual use because I find them a more enjoyable headphone. However I would probably take the 361 for more critical or monitoring uses as its a little more neutral.

@@HiCZoK Yeah they certainly can be. Both the K361 and the 770 can be. Overall I find the 770 more enjoyable tho. They are better for movies and video games, I wont listen to music on them without EQ tho.

I just don't get it, I've tried these, they are slow; returned. I've got the DT 1990 Pro's, too harsh and confused - and the bass distorts quickly. Man I've got so many headphones. The best, Yamaha HPH MT5. I keep saying this and none of you guys have reviewed them!! Ok they are not without fault, most headphones have more than 50% sonic faults to my ears, the MT5's have maybe 10% sonic faults, I've never heard better and they match my monitor speakers (for studio mixing and mastering use) as close as damn it. Anyway just saying, this will fall on deaf ears again I expect. Please try the Yamaha HPH MT5's (not the MT8's!), and then tell Z and Metal.

I watch Z reviews, he says, Yamaha HPH MT5's and ATM-M40x are quite close sounding on par though and ATH-40x are also quite "colored". SO how sure are you that HPH MT5's are good for "mixing and mastering " ?
@juliansimmons7700

@@8CJ1 I've tried many many studio headphones, and the MT5's are the closest to my Neumann KH120 monitoring speakers. Most other headphones are either too slow and confused, soggy and distort in the bass, or most are hyped in the highs. Most headphone reviewers have developed a taste for hyped highs, even if they don't like sibilant highs, they still lean too far to the highs. Freq response graphs don't reveal the speed of a headphone driver or the clarity of separating many simultaneous frequencies - the MT5's shine here, everything tightly defined yet not fatiguing at all. They are the best I've come across, they are not perfect, slightly dark, but are 95% close to my monitor speakers, while most other studio headphones are way off, ok for hiss inspection etc, but not for a realistic and accurate depiction. BTW I've now bought 3 pairs of MT5's for different locations, my DT1990 Pro's hardly get used, my HPH MT8's never used, ATH A990Z sometimes (interesting headphone but just a bit too slow), etc, I could go on. Maybe read some reviews of the MT5's.

@@juliansimmons7700 Well. It's difficult to decide because not all " Studio Monitors " speakers sound the same and have the same FR. I think this is leaning towards those most common studio monitors use in the industry such as Yamaha HS5, JBL LSR series, Adams.. etc maybe? Base on "home/bedroom" studios perhaps? Also, are you saying that m40x and HPH are better?
@juliansimmons7700
@juliansimmons7700 4 жыл бұрын
@@8CJ1 The HS5 are based on an outdated design and of the range they are extremely small and very limited, not that good at all. Even the larger HS7's are no match for the Neumann KH120's depth and accuracy. 'In the day' Yamaha monitors were a world away from fruity hi-fi speakers of the time, they were ultra flat and grey, too flat and grey, though you can get used to them. JBL & Adams are enthusiast monitor speakers, I don't mean to unsettle those who like them, but they are not professional studio monitors. Genelec, Neumann, Dynaudio and Focal speakers are the ones you need to hear - if you are a professional engineer. They all have different characteristics, but are close, and are professional tools. The HPH MT5's headphones despite what Yamaha says, are better then their HS etc monitors (which Yamaha say they are based on). You will go round in circles reading reviews. If you are a professional you'll know what to buy and what you need to hear. If you are an enthusiast you can still listen to professional engineers current recommendations (i.e. not those of 30 years ago - so exclude the old Yamaha monitors), or you can go round in endless circles reading and buying the 'have-a-go' brands. Hope this all helps, I've said as much as I can.

Wheres the sound demo?
@WheezyTech
@WheezyTech 5 жыл бұрын
I don't plan on doing any sound demos as they are far too dependant on and affected by the playback system. Also YT compression will negatively affect any sound demo making the demo largely flawed. Whilst there is an argument that sound demos could be useful if the recording rig never changes and the listeners system never changes there can be simple comprisons made with demos made on the same rig. Much in the same way as MiniDSP measurements (Not accurate but useful for comparative purposes). There is however no accepted way to do sound demos or rigs designed for this purpose. The MiniDSP EARS for example is not designed for this and would impart too much colour on the recording. I am intrigued by Oluv's work on this using binaural ear mounted microphones, maybe there is potential for this in the future. But for now I do not feel sound demos are particularly useful as there are far too many variables. If there was a good way to do this whilst reducing the variables then I would consider it.

Yes 371 sounds muddy. 361 is more like harman curve. Stereo imaging is much better in 361. Also too much sibilance between 6 to 8 khz in 371.
