I used to listen to Philip Glass while driving my car. I had to stop. Sometimes I was so involved with the music that I didn't know where I was. I was transported. This piece is the one that convinced me to listen only at home. I don't know what property of music compels this state, or how he does it, where it comes from, or what it means, but I listen to his compositions every day. There's nothing like this piece though.

I feel the same way. I could listen to Einstein or Akhnaten for hours and just switch off and get lost in it. I don't know how Glass did it but it's absolutely mesmerizing.

The image at 1 min11secs is so special to me That is the production I first saw at the London Coliseum ENO in 1985 I was with a friend Although I had heard Philip Glass and his music Koyaanisqatsi I had never heard of seen Akhnaten At the end we all rose and gave the performance a standing ovation I knew I had seen something that would be with me for the rest of my life and so it has I have now seen all of the trilogy of operas a number of times, but Akhnaten was and will always be by far my favourite musical composition

@Maricamen Frias -- Saw it on Live at the Met Saturday afternoon November 23, 2019. It is spectacular! Will see it at least once more in an encore. (I don't live near to New York, so can't attend in person but sure would if I could. Almost at any price!)

@@judithsmith6920 I realized the MET production was on the slower side, like this version. I'd say I like the original "faster" tempo better. Playing slower puts an extra strain on the violas and makes intonation problems more obvious. I hate to admit that I'm really NOT a fan of McDermott's new production...I found the visuals way too distracting, and sometimes even felt his grandiose staging got in the way of the music.

Ravelovo Bolero)

Spot on! What mind numbing pretentious garbage. Amazing how many people think this is a work of genius. I am sure they think they are the culturally enlightened ones and that the average opera devotee does not know any better.
