I once tried to take apart a Shimano 4500 spinning reel and could not put it back together so I sent it to Shimano in a baggie they called me several weeks later and said they would send me a new reel for $ 25 which they did I ask them why they just don't put it back together they said the technicians were very busy they want to satisfy the customer as soon as possible now that's customer service I also have sent back several reels that the bearings froze up a new reel every time. I bought a Akios 656 and just love this reel for surf fishing here in Florida but I dare not attempt to take it apart at your level you must have an engineer background thanks for the video.

I'm an underwater camera man, I started with reels in the same place you did. First time I took an Abu 6500 Chrome rocket apart it took me 3 days to put it back together right!😇

Thanks for the video! Not many who service Akios here in the Etats Unis. Question: got a 656 with factory bearings. After a casting session I noticed when I spin the reel with the gear disengaged, and I tilt the reel so the handle side is lower, I hear some grinding and the spool spins for half as long. Some part of the spool assembly is coming into contact with some part of the gear/sideplate assembly. Does this sound familiar at all? (hint: it's not the brake blocks). I did put some oil on the spindle, so one thought was that some oil got into the bearing on that side... but that doesn't really account for the sound or that this only occurs when the reel is tilted. I cannot pay $3,200 in shipping so send my reel to Scotland and not see it again for 4 years, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks for any ideas you can offer a DIY-er.

Hi Jamie, great vid on the strip down and re-build. Have Akios changed the spec a little on these darker chrome sidplates? that 'extra' locating pin on the handle sideplate below the top thumbscrew is missing on this version? If anyone knows why, i'm sure you will. Cheers, R.

Hi Jamie, is that correct about the mag alignment? In my penn supermag they are N, S, N, S.. I believe this is because they are not so much stopping the spool by magnetizing it as a whole but by using the spool to push the north field into south field and visa verse over and over.. I have try'd it with all one pole direction and it's nowhere near as effective.. :P

The vrass main gear runs on a steel shaft...shoulkd it not be greased, or at least oiled ?

No, its probably the only Akios reel I do not like...
