You don't want to put a metal hard edge against the rod, could lead to break or unseen fracture. The straps look long enough to put a cushioning wrap between the rest and the rod. Just an idea ? Great way to secure a fully rigged rod minus lead and hooks or for lure fishing, maybe ? keep at it !
