Matus1976's Akira Bike Project

Күн бұрын

Welcome back Akira Bike project and recumbent / feet forward motorcycle fans and the curious!
Join me as I design and build from the ground up a fully functional high performance recumbent motorcycle, optimized to take full advantage of the recumbent platforms potential and aesthetically inspired by Kaneda's ride in "Akira"
In this video I try to cast and fail but design and assemble the critical rear hub assembly and mount it on the frame. There was a ton of work and challenges in this, not even all were captured in the video, but I hope you enjoy the journey!

I love that you've never lost sight of your goal all these years! We used to talk a few times way back in the AOL Instant Messenger days about this project, it's wild to see how far you've come in developing skills and building out your workshop.

Oh really that's cool! yeah the project has grown alot since I was a naive kid thinking I'd make it out of angle iron and bolts in my basement. Thanks for following along all this time. You got some cool stuff on your channel too, subbed.. I like that DIY square tube bender. I need to do some aluminum flat bar bending and want accurate bends so I'm debating making a die like that.

Yup, absolutely, now that the frame jig and the engine reduction cage are finishing up - I'm approaching the point where a normal bike build that takes or months or even weeks starts! I've already got the exhaust done and halfway through the radiator and airducting with composites. The gas tank, seat, dash and fairings are easy after that! And I'll have everything in place to build a complete whole bike every few weeks.

It sure would be! A front blowout on any bike is a nightmare. It's the leading cause of death from mechanical failure too. Unfortunately airless tires for motorcycles aren't really a thing yet.

How are you going to insert/change the rear tire? Awesome update vid btw :)
@matus1976
@matus1976 10 ай бұрын
Thanks! The wheel is a split rim, so I can split it in half, then put the tire on, then repeat the final assembly process. I can't do it while it's up on the frame jig though since the tire would hit the table. It'll have to be added during final assembly when the bike is off the frame jig and up on the work stands / motorcycle lift.

Yup, absolutely going to have fairings! I'm making them out of composites and have made a few test pieces. Still deciding & testing but it will probably end up being carbon fiber.
@olsonspeed

That is a beast of a rear axle and wheel assembly. Nice workaround with the rear spot facer, I lie your DIY solution. Have you considered the cassette design used by racing go karts rear axles?
@matus1976
@matus1976 10 ай бұрын
Yeah it's a big hub assembly, but it's all for a larger long term goal that will be worth it! I'm not too familiar with the racing kart stuff, although my split wheel is actually from I think a sprint racer, no doubt there's alot of overlap in components that may be useful to me, definitely something I need to learn more about. I caught superfast matt's latest video and was surprised to learn those carts also have large diameter axles.
@olsonspeed
@olsonspeed 10 ай бұрын
Yes, not having to engineer and fabricate all the components will definitely reduce build time. I was referring to the cassette bearing and hanger method of bolting in the rear axle on a kart, it avoids the issue with having to drive the axle though all the components to assemble and disassemble.

@@matus1976 well ok, and is there way to rebuild that mounts to do just like wheel drop mount? Upsidedown letter "U" shape mount? Secured from the bottom with u shaped piece and bolts? Or this is just dangerous in bikes?

@matus1976
@matus1976 10 ай бұрын
Yup - this is the phaseI prototype, I'm developing the project in phases adding new features and functionality along the way since the platform is quite unique. Rear suspension will be added in the next phase (or maybe sooner depending on how sore riding is!) it will look something like this twitter.com/Matus1976/status/1733293034736156941/photo/1

I'll be offering kit version that supports different motors, starting with the CXs, then probably BMW K700/75s next. I'd supply the frame and custom components, buyers supply their own engines and off the shelf parts. Definitely want to do an electric version as well. I'll probably offer plans but it's a heck of a lot of work without the fixtures and jigs.

I would presume the guy in this video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z36zoqSMfNZ8gMU) was using a NM4 to act as the base....but you're creating this from the ground up - when you're done creating it, do you have plans to market the production to smaller companies around the US or are you going to reach out to a top 5 company to streamline it? If that's not too invasive a question, that is.
@matus1976
@matus1976 8 ай бұрын
I'm certainly building this with every intention of producing them, I'm building fixtures, jigs and molds along the way where appropriate. This is phase 1 so some aspects will change before it goes into production, but most of the fixtures and jigs will be modifiable. Composite molds not so much... and when it's ready I'll be manufacturing them myself

Welcome to the project! thanks for checking it out. Yeah that's correct, this is the first phase of the build and is a hard tail rear chain drive rear, but I'll be upgrading it and adding features as the project progresses and testing the platform out along the way. Rear suspension is one of the first things that is going to get added. There's a short build phases video here that talks about the phases and on my web site.
