Thank god you pointed out that his decision to remove himself from royalty existed WAY before he met Maomao. As much as I love JinMao, it's really important to remember that Jinshi has hopes and dreams and wants OUTSIDE of Maomao. He is a well written character and he does not only exists to be the "simp". His desire to be free of the role as the heir has been there before Maomao came to his life. Her arrival only helped made his desire stronger

I think Jinshi's arc is one of becoming less of a self-entitled prince to one who is able to communicate. He needs to ask her questions...like "Do you want to be my wife" instead of demanding, "You will be my wife." And I can't wait for that day. I love Jinshi.

the choke scene has so many panties in a twist,im surprised how many people didnt read the novel and the full context of that power move and many love to forget BOTH maomao and Jinshi have suffered many forms of attepts of SA,maomao has lerned from the burdel love/sex is money and Jinshi from the palace that is power,both face each other not knowing how to express themselves cause also they are both virgins,is a slow burn for them to first compromise,then acept and express their feelings to finally start to build they own version of what affection is and how to express it. people always claim for complex characters but then refuse to let them develop

You really should read to the end of the light novels that have been published. Their relationship changes as they mature, and I've heard that in Vol. 12, Maomao finally accepts Jinshi's feelings for her, and has some of her own. BTW, Jinshi is 19 at the start of the series, with "Jinshi" as his "eunuch" character, who is supposed to be 24. He is one year older than Maomao. I had not understood that Suiren was Ah Duo's mother! That explains a few things, but not all. I don't think, even by vol. 11, that Jinshi knows he is the emperor's son, nor does the emperor. Only Ainshi and Ah Duo do. But he is definitely attached to Ah Duo. He cries when she leaves partially because of how she just dismissed him after coming back from having a drink with Maomao, and partially because he is fond of her. But I wouldn't call him a crybaby. He rarely shows his emotions... when he silently cries on the bed after branding himself, Maomao assumes he is upset by how the Emperor reacted, but he's also in a LOT of pain that he's been concealing afterwards, and finally gets the chance to react when the emperor and Gyokuyou leave. The next translated light novel is Volume 12, which comes out October 14... I can't wait! I've read the books several times, as well as the manga, and the anime (if you have the Kindle app, you can save a little money on the digital versions). HUGE fan!!

I really should!!!! I hate being stuck in a reader’s block!!!!! I just read spoilers or open the book and read from here and there and move to the next one without completing it 😭 And I just thought because of Maomao that maybe Jinshi has some idea that he is the emperor’s son cuz she says something like “It's not nice to have your father be mad at you” or something like that (I can't remember the exact words) it could be that SHE knows that he is the emperor's son that's why she suspect that he knows too (if it makes sense) The official translation comes out in Oct. Maybe I should boost myself up ohhhh and I have read some spoilers of LN 15?! And I didn't even know LN 15 existed! (on Twitter) so if you know plz tell me if it was real (I read the ah duo and the emperor’s conversation about Jinshi)

In the beginning i thought Maomao was 18/19 and Jinshi 22 or something, but i've seen people saying they'd give him 30, so i can see why some people can be really unconfortable till we know the real ages, but we've had hints along the episodes that he's younger than he looks like. Also, considering the historical context, 23 years old man and 17 years girl don't bother me much, but of course it was a relief knowing the age gap is muuuch lower. Jinshi's harassing attitude seems to me more like a dumb young man than a sexual freak and i think this is very well developed, although there's no need to try to excuse his behaviour: it IS harassment indeed. English is not my first language so i hope i'm being clear here. Love Maomao and Jinshi dynamic. Can you tell me in wich scenes he bites her? I just started to read the novel.

Thanks for sharing this list. Most of the clues about 壬氏 in the anime aren't even subtle, so I'm surprised it takes 猫猫 as long as it does to see him for what he is instead for what he pretends, although she doesn't let any other nagging thought rest until she's solved that. It's obvious from ep 1 that 壬氏 is the Emperor's relation and next in line to the throne, and it's obvious about everything that follows from that. What's surprising is that 猫猫, so insightful everywhere else, is totally taken in by his playboy-antics, and this is something that I find to be rather plot-armory about this series: he can't be discovered because the plot doesn't allow it. I'm glad this point of tension is eventually resolved; I'm sad it's taking so long to resolve it.

I agree that maomao not understanding or rather *accepting* who jinshi is, is a part of the whole plot, for me that’s what kept me so glued to the story, because she knows that Jinshi is someone but is too afraid/not interested to let her brain figure it out. Tho I am glad it’s resolved, that too in a perfect way 😂🤭

1:15 umm... This is bs. I've the read the manga and in it, it shows that Jinshi had the misconception as a child that his elder brother was his father bcos he was almost of the same age as his mother until he accidently stumbles upon his old father. He was very young back then somewhere around 8-10 if I'm not mistaken, and was not kept in contact with his emperor father bcos he was really old and was also suffering from mental illness. I also know where the admin's misconception came from...

The thing is when Jinshi's mother was pregnant with Jinshi so was his brother's first concubine Ah-duo, in fact, they both were delivering their babies on the same day, but bcos Jinshi's mother was THE empress back then, the eunuch doctor (maomao's father) was sent to her which resulted into Ah-duo's child being neglected medical care and hence passed away (which was also why maomao's father was kicked out of there when Jinshi's brother became the emperor). Again I know all this bcos I have read the manga. The reason this person misunderstood the family tree was because Maomao is shown being confused abt the same thing in the anime, but trust me it's cleared in the manga and the current emperor (who is also Jinshi's biological brother from another mother) and Ah duo ARE NOT HIS PARENTS! Guys, this misconception is literally incest, pls stop! 😂

But MaoMao reads the chronicles of the kingdom and the part where Luomen was banned was 17 yrs ago, so that would make Jinshi slightly older than 17-yr old MaoMao. The manga I think puts him at 18 or so.

Don’t y’all know something that Jinshi or Renshi in chinese mandarin translation is a gong zi meaning young master in chinese he is what you call a gong zi which is practically young handsome male nobleman which is a young master in most chinese period dramas as this anime is a homage to classic chinese period dramas just incase y’all foreigners know nothing about also chinese males are not all 5 feet 7 inches tall ok if you go to northern China especially in Beijing and even in northeast China chinese males are around 6 feet tall that’s a fact I think it’s ridiculous to say that Jinshi is taller than the average Chinese male as there’s many Chinese men who are 6 feet tall in height get it
