Let's take a moment to appreciate that this amazing gentleman died 1973 but his voice is still more relevant than ever. And it reaches out to us across time and space. Simply amazing 🙏
@jackepner9984 Жыл бұрын
Actually most of the stuff he says is utter nonsense influenced by drug use. He's only relevant to people who listen to too many of these videos. I'm actually here just looking for things to add to a list of dumb shit he's said for a reddit thread... it's almost too easy to find things. The guy doesn't even earn the title of "philosopher" in my book, just a junkie with a microphone. Read some Kant, and then tell me if this guy is relevant. Actual philosophy lies on backing up every single statement you make. Watts makes absurd sweeping statements that are pure assumptions, and backs up nothing he says. It's literally just the rants of disillusioned drug addict. If you actually listen to what he's saying, and take his advice, you'd be homeless in a gutter wishing you had never heard of the guy.

I had a bit of a moment. Alan Watts was talking about how trying to improve yourself is impossible. To be honest I got annoyed at this notion. "Why cant I?" Then I heard in my head Alan Watts saying "That's your opinion". Well that's his opinion I thought and I started laughing like crazy. But then another thought hit me and I stopped. I figured that wasn't exactly his point but I thought that his point there might have been: Don't try to improve yourself because that's just you trying to one-up yourself and everyone else. It's the wrong reason. Do the thing that you want to do to improve yourself for the sake of doing it to enjoy it otherwise it's a chore and you've missed the entire point, wasting a lot of energy. Stop being what you think that you want to be and start being what you already are, that which lies obscured beyond the fog of your ego... yourself. Or maybe I had to many energy drinks this morning. :P

yea i hear what your saying bud. although listening to many teachers like Alan Watts has led me to have a little insight into what he means by >you cant improve yourself. Mooji is another of my favorites, he has such a simple way of leading you to a deep self discovery of who we really are. Hes pointing is who are you if you leave all of your ideas aside? your problems, your imaginations, your belongings, even the idea of > the I

I'm a bumbling idiot, but I feel like it is to get you to stop and reflect on your life, in the moment, and see deeper into what you, as a self aware being with abstract thought and feelings, need to be universally beneficial; regardless, whether you agree or disagree, it pulls you into reality. The now :) life is important and maybe we'll never understand it entirely, despite our longing for discovery. But the least we can do is try to be in tune.

Thanks for your comment Benjamin Allman. I don't particular view "SJWs" as virtuous people either, its more that they think they are or at least perceived to be acting in a virtuous manner, almost to the point of self-detriment and self-flagellation.

Upon listening to this again, I forgot to mention before, around the 40:00 mark and just before, Watts talks about love and pretending to love and how the notion of "everybody has to love everybody" makes him want to "buy a gun and bar my door, because there is a storm of hypocrisy brewing." which I think is also prophetic.

I listen to a lot of meaning-wave by now and soak in a lot of philosophy from all sources. My reaction to Watts saying you can't improve yourself reminded me of the late Mitch Hedberg. Mitch had a joke that was something like "I tried to teach myself guitar, but I failed- because I did not know how to play guitar. So I was a bad teacher- I would never have gotten lessons from me". By the same token I always try to imagine how JBP would react to such an idea, and the best I could come up with was: Rule 8- Tell the Truth or at least don't lie, and rule 9: try to assume the person you're listening to knows something you don't. The idea is, if you articulate your being in the world as truly as you can- and listen to people, and how they react to you- then you can use that feedback to create the best version of you that you can. Even from your enemies. If they successfully challenge you and show you where you are wrong, then that part of you needs to die. Therefore, in that way, the world helps you be a better person.

I am a pretty heteronormative young woman and I love both Alan Watts and Jordan Peterson. They both balance eachother like ying and yang. They both speak about similar ways of reaching nirvanna in different forms.
