I've watched this video four times in the last year trying to convince myself that I can handle an Akita, however, as painfull as it is, I thank you for your work because had helped me to make the right decission and not to have one. A dog is a life and is family and they should be with the best one for them.

I have raised 3 female Akitas and in my opinion they are the most intelligent and intuitive breed I have ever known. Prior to my Akita's I had a red male Doberman and a female Rottweiler. They were both wonderful dogs. I wanted my daughter to grow up with an Akita by her side and she did. I never worried about my daughter's safety because I knew my Akita would never leave her side. My Mother came to visit and the first night wanted to sleep in the toy room with my daughter and the next morning she said Everytime I looked up that dog was looking me straight in the eye. I told her you were sleeping with her child and she was just making sure no harm came to her. My Mother fell in love with my Akita and we have driven across the country with our Akita to spend the holidays. They are a magnificent breed and they love their families so much.

Fantastic video mate. I live on a large farm in scotland and I've had an akita for 7 years but she was my grandads dog, we didnt know much about the breed when we got her and I'd got her as a puppy for him as a gift as he always loved big dogs, he unfortunately passed away in february and when we found him in the morning she did not leave his side, she knew what had happened, as she lied in the spot he died for months, wouldnt leave, but now shes coming out of her shell again and I've been doing some training again with her and shes been absolutely fantastic. To know my grandads best friend is now my best friend now hes gone gives me massive comfort, and I couldn't ask for a better companion

From what I know, Akitas may not have a strong desire to PLEASE their owners, but they do have a strong desire to PROTECT their owners.

Absolutely, it's extreme. Strongly territorial of their family and property. They have only interest in exercising this protectiveness, so they will actively LOOK for opportunities to bust it out. In that way, they can come across as conspiracy theorists. 😂

When I or members of my family have gone to lay really close next to them or hug them, they tend to get up and move-they stay close by and keep an eye on us, but they don’t really want to be cuddled/manhandled. Love them and love the breed :)

Canine samurai - 365/24/7 - they are sensitive and sweet and playful but also immediately capable of lethal explosive violence in 1 to 2 seconds. Very much like tigers in regard to their hunting and ambush skills and explosive lethal violence. An Akita male weighing 130 to 135 LBS will have baseball bat sized legs and and massive head with a bite force of over 300 PSI and the endurance and strength of several full grown very fit 200 LBS men. A single bite from an Akita can take down a human in an instant as it is like getting hit with a sledge hammer and shot with nail gun simultaneously. In combat, Akitas will overpower 99% of other dog breeds in just seconds and they can kill with a bite to the back of the neck followed by violent shaking with their massive 29 to 20 inch necks and massive shoulders. The explosive power of an Akita is immediate and ferocious and there are few other breeds which would stand a chance against an Akita. The good news is that even reactive Akitas generally do not start conflict and most will ignore other dogs which do not confront or challenge them. That said, this is a dog that should be leashed and fenced always because you cannot control for off-leash dogs that might decide to commit suicide by akita. With this breed, no matter how much you train and socialize them, you cannot eliminate their war dog genetics completely and it can come roaring out like a bomb going off in the wrong circumstances (coyotes or coydogs in their yard or territory or another aggressive dog attacking them). Until you witness these dogs in commando mode, you just cannot imagine how fast and violently they can take down multiple opponents and litter a field of battle with corpses. There is a reason why these dogs were personal protection dogs for Shoguns and used to hunt large game and later used for dog fighting. While most of these dogs do great as sole dogs or when paired with a female dog, many will have issues with same sex dogs in the household once they sexually mature and by issues, I mean they will violently engage dogs even if they coexisted with the dog previously. These are fundamentally not pack dogs and they are not a good dog for a dog park or off leash romp around other dogs because if things go sideways, the Akita can mop the floor with other dogs in just seconds and has the power and strength to take out multiple opponents. It really has to be seen to be understood and I don't recommend tempting fate with such dogs. Most are good with people and most are clean, odorless and very well behaved ....but they are always war dogs at heart. Unless you are prepared to own and supervise a canine commando, this is not the right breed for you. You have to maintain situational awareness and command and control constantly with such a dog and you cannot just let them run out the door to run off-leash without a fenced yard. Very smart, talkative, loving dogs but total bad asses who need supervision.

I took the quiz and low and behold the Staffordshire Terrier is my perfect dog. I have had two and I still have one, my favorite lovey dovey boy passed away from lymphoma two months ago. He was absolutely in love with me and I him, lots of tears. Both my American Staffordshire Terriers were 100 pounders and sweet as can be. The one I have still is not real keen on other strange dogs but both of mine got along together like peas and carrots. My remaining dog helped me raise the year younger dog with potty training and how to dig for gophers and stuff. The remaining boy is sweet too but bull dog stubborn sometimes but I can be even more stubborn. :) The two had different personalities from puppy hood and at eight and nine years old they are still almost the same. The younger dog was more outgoing while the year older dog is more reserved. The older dog killed a kennel owners cow dog when he was eight months old but I don’t blame my dog at all. The kennel owner put his dog and my dog in the same kennel and said he thought they were friends, evidently not. Cow dogs are cow dogs, bossy, irritating and generally a pest for other animals. Needless to say I never used that kennel again after that. I am retired now and don’t travel any more, the last thing I want to do is travel anywhere, home is where I want to be. I like having two dogs because they can entertain each other when I am busy with things around the homestead and they can’t be with me like when I am running the tractor, skid steer or using a chain saw for firewood, all too dangerous to have dogs close by, best they stay in the yard around the house. I have tried to find another American Staffordshire Terrier but no breeders anywhere remotely close to me in Montana. The adds for Staffordshire Terriers on line is plagued with criminals like princes from Nigeria, ran into two right off so I am out of luck there. I did however find an Akita breeder not far from me where I can physically see the pup and his parents, hard working ranch family here that raises Akitas. I like dogs that have their own mind and personality because they are much more interesting and generally pretty smart. I have had Boxers before I got my Staffordshire Terriers and really loved their personalities but the prey drive was over the top for two of the three I’ve had. Wildlife and neighbors cats did not stand a chance if they were anywhere close. The smartest dog I ever had was my first boxer, a female, she was in fact scary smart. I remember the first time I had a conversation with her we were out on the porch talking about what I can’t remember but when the realization hit me that I was having a conversation with my dog and she understood every word I said and I understood her it really freaked me out. The hair on the back of my neck stood straight up and I thought my God I have lost my mind. As it turned out I hadn’t lost my mind and my Jasmine was actually super smart so smart in fact that conversations between us was the norm. The stories of our adventures I could tell you would make you laugh at me in unbelief but it was all true. Anyway as I am getting up there in years I am thinking a dog that could cover my back would be just what the doctor ordered so I am looking at the Akita. I don’t want or need a mean dog so get that out of your head. What I need exactly is a dog that is a companion and a guardian, the Akita sounds like what I need. If I am wrong tell me.

@@fenrirakitashow1658 Thank you for getting back. After much thought I determined the Akita is not the right dog for me. There are many attractive factors but deep soul searching has lead me to the Doberman Pinscher. The massive shedding of the Akita is a problem for me, do I really want to deal with that, no. The lovey dovey nature of the Doberman and short hair like all my other dogs is a plus. My cat is neither short or long hair more like medium is a mega shedder but under control. Every day I need to sweep the kitchen floor to clean up cat hair. Short haired dogs still shed but not like Huskies or the Akita. I really desire a deep relationship with my companions and after knowing two Dobermans belonging to a friend of mine I think the Doberman is what I am looking for. More expensive for a quality puppy to be sure but their nature of loving their human is one of their most admirable traits.

Just found out by DNA test that my American Bulldog cross is actually more Akita than Ambull. Having watched this very honest thorough video i can now see so much of his character i s down to his Akita traits and not his Ambull side. Makes more sense. However, luckily i had sussed his character out pretty accurately from the beginning. Definitely not a dog to try and bully or indeed allow just anyone to look after for me. Now i know why my instincts made me so careful about how he met dogs and people. He has definitely tqken dislikes to certain people, mainly those who are not confident or have no doggy savvy. And training has been a nightmare at times. But i persevered. Loyalty is his strong point but his protective instinct can make things a tad difficult at times. Now i know why it makes things easier. Great video.

Thanks for the video, great input! I would take an exception with 1 point, their intelligence. Mine was able to capture a neighbor cat that could have easily escaped through the metal spaces in the fence. He had the cat pined with his mouth over the cats belly. He could have easily killed it. Much to my disbelief, 3 weeks later he did the same thing to a hapless crow that flew into the back yard! I have 2 witness that saw this happen! He must have made a plan as he stalks the deer that also wander through the back yard. Those deer he just makes sure they understand their side of the fence!

My American Akita Hatchiko suddenly started having problems with any male dogs who try to mount him or bark at him. He usually never cares no matter what! With females, he is wonderful and allows them to push him around and have loads of fun, but till this day (got him when he was 2.5 months and now he is 14 months old) I never have seen him expose his belly to any other dogs nor allow them to knock him down. Is that normal? He is not aggressive and very friendly and loving towards kids and my other pets.
@Sarah-gk4zd3 жыл бұрын
Akitas generally wont show submissive behaviour with dogs that they don't know. Meeting other males he probably sees them as a threat and he is quick to show his dominance. Generally I wouldn't be too worried about this, however it can be a problem if he comes across another dominant dog. He's at a challenging age where he will continue to push his boundaries. In my experience this stage lasts longer in akitas than other breeds. It can continue until about the age of 3/4. If you need more advice regarding your dog you can join the Japanese Akita Welfare Trust page on facebook. It is a charity dedicated to the breed and there are lots of experienced owners on the page!

Dogs live in the now...Akita's just get bored very quick... So you have maybe 15 mins to teach them something. Then walk them and exercise them. Then start again...This is why as show dogs. You get maybe 15-20 mins of their attention to focus on the task. Then they do their own thing... This is why owners have to pay close attention to them.. All the time. You will learn what they are thinking. The signs of what state of mind they are in..Small things like hair movement. And where it's moving..To muscle contractions. And just because their not looking at something. Doesn't mean they don't see it or care.. They are the Ninjas of Dogs. Miner can be 50 feet away..Sniffing grass..A stranger gets within 2 feet of her food bowl. She will be across that yard in no time flat. Letting you know she is watching your movements.

Akitas generally aren't great as pack dogs so if you are going to introduce one, certainly do so with caution! It'd be recommended that you get a male to accompany your female. I'd have a deep think about the nature of your current dog. Is she independent? Would she benefit with having a partner? If you get a male akita (generally) it would expect to be the leader of the pack. So think about whether she would accept this!

Akitas are like human children. With limitations. Treat them like fami.. they arly members- like children. Perhaps children with limited perspectives, which they are. But love an affection regardless of what they have done-- will always give s positive result. Shame them _gently_- they are very smart, yet not 'obedient', or reactive: they do not show shame or humility: this is a weakness in dog pack culture, . Akitas are bred to be independent thinkers, once you understand this, you will connect with your akitas. They ARE NOT dogs. They are canine family members. Treat them as children, and you will be incredibly rewarded.. Again: Akitas are not dogs. Treat them like nannies.. Very family oriented... They simply want to be a part of the 'pack' (family) and protect it at all cost. They protect babies like crazy They know what a family is.

On the other hand, I live with a "shepkita" and he is an "independent being". Is not that he is not intelligent is exactly the opposite! He is too smart to just RECIEVE orders. And he does he knows and does willingly. He is more of a COMPANION, a FRIEND more than a "pet" or a "worker" or "soldier". He observes and learns but is not a companion of an "owner" with fear of life. He won't RECIEVE instructions for he same of instructions or orders but he evaluates the "judgment" of his leader and IF in accordance with his, he will follow, otherwise he decides. He is still young but as he FEELS SAFE he relinquish control, little by little and only based on the reality of situation and not the psichological fears of mankind companions.

This is exactly my approach as well, with my akita. He is my friend, not my pet. He does what I ask because he respects me and loves me, not for treats or because he feels he has to. And sometimes he doesn't do what I ask lol 😆

Why have no breeders ever attempted to breed out the stubborn nature f the Akita sense it's not useful.
@ameliakennedy44283 жыл бұрын
Because it is useful. Their stubbornness is a result of their intelligence and ability to make decisions. This is why they are great hunting dogs and protection dogs, because they do not need to be commanded to act. So if you are not present or unable to give a command, they will still take action.

Dumbest comment I ever heard how about you stay far away from this breed

@@isaiahcarr4573 the Akita is not for everyone. For those that appreciate the breed, there is only one dog for them. They are the king of dogs ❤️🐾
