I love this interpretation of the wilis. They're almost always eerie and a little creepy in classical versions, but they're rarely genuinely frightening. Using the rods adds this undertone of violence to the whole thing that works really well, since the threat of being "danced to death" lacks some punch with a modern audience, and putting the rods in their mouths emphasizes the unnatural tilt of the dancers' heads, and pulls their lips back to give them an almost skull-like look under the lights. Very much takes them from fluffy spirits with wings on their backs to vengeful, dangerous ghosts who will very much hurt or kill you. Excellent take!

The loose hair helps a lot, too. Loose hair just looks so gorgeous in these kinds of ballets.

The angled heads with the rods absolutely creeped me out the first time I saw it because I thought their heads were skewered

1:20 the way the dancers are in character, following her with menacing eyes. Chillingly beautiful.
