To answer some FAQ: Metro - No, Altengrad will not get a metro. The only interesting bit might be some sort of construction site of it, but I don't want to do that anymore just to cover it up afterwards. The prefab construction site was already complicated enough considering it will be gone. Otherwise it's hidden below ground and just uninteresting as a Cities: Skylines project. What about surface metro in the outskirts? No. Trains are/will be taking care of that with separated tram/light rail networks too. But every capital in CE got a metro so it would be realistic! Still no. Trolleybus - No. I don't want to deal with yet another wire network alongside the already difficult-to-build tram wires. Don't even have the DLC, wires work very differently, need to make million custom networks etc. Besides, not every CE city had trolleybuses and some that had got rid of them in the 70s. Airport - No. Similarly to the metro, it would not fit the gameplay scale of the city. There is no suitable place. I built one airport in Aurelia and I don't want to anymore. Too many details that I don't even understand too much, would need to research historical markings etc., and I'm not that into airports anyway. Small gravel/grass airport then? No, that's even less interesting. Military stuff - No. Military bases look a lot less interesting than you think. Couple of lines of barracks, some warehouses and that's it. Well add some nuclear silos, radars, build military airport - come on. TV Tower - Yes, in the 80s. Highways - Soon (tm) More prefabs - Very Soon (tm) Racing circuit rework - This is the Eastern Bloc, so 80s. Radio tower outside - As part of some city expansion maybe, too simple for a standalone project. Olympic games - Not sure. Just the event is not really a building project, so would have to be some sports places rework, not sure if we have the space, assets.

+1 The walled-in 60s and 70s GDR had some prestige projects. They moved the TV tower that had been planned at the periphery into the city center and constructed it "in record time" thanks to experience in industrial concrete tech. Info in english: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernsehturm_Berlin Documentary focusing on the nastier bits of intrigue that went on behind the scenes (in german unfortunately): kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWrTi5iqjb5pf5Y

I’m not quite sure if it fits the time periods, but some type of radio station complex on top of a hill would be cool. In Hungary, there are numerous old (now abandoned) radio towers and buildings on high mountains near big cities. An example is an old tower just called “tv-torony” just north of Pécs in Hungary.

It would be great if you looked into a Lazdynai neighborhood of Vilnius city, as an inspiration. It was built by the Soviets in 1970s and was partly inspired by European and especially Finish architecture schools, so lots of greenery, trees and some playing around with building placement. The architects got awarded the Lenin prize too, which was a big deal at the time too. There's more information on the internet, and if you want I can send some period photos/plans, suggestions on more Soviet architecture itself.

Love love LOVE Altengrad since Ep.1! Congrats Akruas, this is the best City Skylines series on YT! My question is: Is there any chance that Altengrad will host the Summer Olympic Games in the future? Not necessarily historically accurate, but it would be so fun to watch and see how the city might evolve and transform (even redeveloping old areas) because of such a huge event - from transportation to stadium and sport venues, from the Olympic Village to the Olympic Cauldron!

I can't wait for more updates from Altengrad. I would like to suggest the building of Central Telecommunication building. Building that was built in the 70s in Prague but now its sadly being demolished. Its one of the most beautiful brutalist buildings in the world IMHO. It served as the central telephone and later internet interchange for Prague with an 2km long underground tunnel connecting it to the old telephone/internet interchange. It was the largest telecommunications building in Europe. ;) And then for example the building of Slovak radio. The flipped pyramid shaped building is known across the world and looks really amazing even now. Also one of my favourite brutalist building, :)

Hello Akruas I think a large highway or a partial bypass of the city center with new bridges would be very appropriate for the 1970s in the Eastern Bloc. For example, such a great propaganda project was the Łazienkowska Route in Warsaw, the Katowice Steelworks, the Central Railway Station in Warsaw, and the Bełchatów Power Plant. This is related to the "Gierek decade" when large infrastructural, industrial, residential and social investments were made in Poland - of course, all this was done with loans borrowed from the west by the government of the People's Republic of Poland (PRL). The money quickly ran out, and many of the investments started were never fully completed, but they were used. Interestingly, in this period in Poland, the government, despite the fact that it was communist, started a number of investments and programs aimed at the reconstruction or revitalization of national monuments - the flagship project was the reconstruction of the Royal Castle in Warsaw (over 30 years after the end of the war and which had been demolished to the ground) there is still a consensus that it's one of the most exemplary and excellent reconstructions in the world, as evidenced by the inscription of the Warsaw Old Town on the UNESCO list. I think the projects like: - a large city bypass - further modernization or expansion of the main railway line - a large coal-fired power plant - new modernist "shopping centers" such as SuperSam (one of the main examples of late modernism in Warsaw) - a tower radio and television station somewhere on a hill - expansion of boulevards on the banks of the river (rivers were still being regulated and concreted at that time) - public swimming pools along the river or in parks - a new national/public library - a national stadium (such as the Stadion Dziesięciolecia in Warsaw) - high-rise, prefabricated apartments blocks - access highway to the city (obviously in communist standard) Such projects would significantly add realism to Altengrad and make the architecture of late modernism dominant in the city as a sign of the era. It is worth mentioning that in the 1970s, the vast majority of trees planted in the 1950s and 1960s in new housing estates were already tall. Housing estates from this period began to be characterized by lush, sometimes almost forest vegetation. Good luck! :)

How about a custom brutalist sports arena? Hala Olivia, an ice rink in Gdańsk, and the Vilnius Palace of Concert and Sports both opened in the early 1970s. Also in Gdańsk there is a district called Piecki-Migowo (or Morena) which is built on moraine hills close to 100m above sea level (the rest of the city). Since Altengrad has a lot of hills maybe it could have some housing developments looking down on it as well.

In Erfurt there's currently an awesome exhibition in the city museum about city planning. In the center is a model of the inner city with plans from the 80s in it. I felt super interested to see what they had planned, felt disgusted on how they wanted to basically demolish ~80% of it and felt relieved it never happened. There were plans to expand the Juri-Gagarin-Ring that currently goes from the south around the inner city to the east up to the north east. They wanted to plant a huge intersection tight next to the cathederal. A pedestrian bridge was supposed to go over the expanded ring in the north east from the cathederal square up to the Petersberg citadel where bug lrrfab buildings and a skyscraper were supposed to be built. There were also plans to cut a big road connection from the expanded ring in the north straight through the inner city to the ring in the south. Most of the beautiful historical uildings were to be demolished and replaced by prefabs. The whole north eastern part of the inner city would have become a prefab district. The exhibition is still there until late June 2024, but it and the tours are only in German afaik.

As for the suggestion, you might have got it alot but some kind of military complex, it wouldnt need to be big but as i asume altengrad is quite important city or even a capital so it would make sence for a garrnison to be somewhere around for local conscripted man or protest "handling". Hi :) I'm a big fan of Altengrad and it has been my inspiration to created my own city from the 30's. However, I would like to suggest that in the 70's with explosion of huge blocks areas cities developed a tram's network and also local railway's connections - witch is leading us to build new big tram depot, new tram tracks (sometimes close on one street and open on different street) or do them longer and further, and to build new local railway tracks (sometimes only with one track). The second idea it could be to widen of some main streets to take rapidly growing street’s traffic - also streets in strictly city center, sometimes with demolishing old buildings. The third thing it could be to build a new bridge(s). The last my suggestion it could be to create modern power plant or combined heat and power plant. When it comes to airport I know that this is a huge matter, but if we mention about airports from the 70's we have examples of new airport in Warsaw, East Berlin and this airports aren't huge and didn't have any complicated infrastructure. I hope that you'll change your mind, however I understand your arguments. Thanks a lot and best regards Peter

Maybe the communist government builds a metro to connect people more, because I think that’s the communist Romanian government did when they took over. Love your vids, kept up the great work.

It would be really cool if you did an enormous monument to communism, something like Buzludzha, Bulgaria. A place that after the fall of the regime would be abandoned and turned into something like an illegal squat/rave party place ahaha

@@Akruas Silverstone was modernizing all the time from the beginning of its existence in the 1940s and all the way to 2020, changing layouts a load of times. Zandvoort in Holland was redesigned in the 1970s for F1, and if you`re wondering about the Eastern Bloc and Central Europe in particular, the Brno circuit hosted the Czech grand prix multiple times and was modernized in the 1980s. But the racetrack in Altengrad is kind of an odd one out, because that region didnt actually have a lot of old racetracks back in the 1920-30s. So it is kind of up to your imagination what would the soviets do about it. Still thank you for your work and dedication, I was watching Altengrad from approx the 1930s and Asturis from episode 1, and I`m just astonished by the amount of work you put in this videos. You`re amazing!

Hey, Akruas I was wondering if in the future when Altengrad finally reaches the 90s if you could make a Svard style video showing off the decay and how "depressing" the city is kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4DEpHmKl752ia8 here is an example of Svard's work.

Not in Eastern Europe, but because situated right next to Russia, in Finland there is a heavy influence of Soviet architecture. In the 70s and 80s there were two major developments in Helsinki I think you should check in to. Merihaka and Itä-Pasila(Eastern Pasila). Both neighbourhoods are constructed of pre-fabricated elements. The new idea was to segregate car and pedestrian traffic, so they are on different levels. Also in Kontula, they built the largest outdoor shopping mall in Finland. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merihaka?wprov=sfti1

That's just modernist principles found all over Europe at the time, not Soviet architecture.

But it looks good as an example of that style, I'll probably use it some next time.
