Eric hjorleifson compares big mountain to World Cup super G in the same sentence. I'm going to have to call bs on that one. Ski racing is so much harder than sliding down hug powder ramps with perfect landings. If you race at even a competent level, "free skiing" is really straightforward ( and fun).

Big Wave I come from a racing background and I agree with Wave. My skill set is much broader than any of my ski buddies that didn't race. For example my best friend grew up in Telluride and can throw it down with the best of them but isn't as well rounded of a skier. Racing puts an emphasis on vision and anticipation, looking down the hill farther and adapting to the terrain more fluidly. Big Wave is right!

@ravenstar180 no, all skis pop off because if they don't you could injure your legs, but if you were that concerned about loosing a ski you could set a high din on your bindings, which makes it harder for them to come off

Best answer I can give you is: yes. Spend your time at the resort practicing steep skiing and skiing deep snow, if you go to a hill where you can do this. Give it a few years and you'll be shredding wild snow and looking good doing it. And yeah, get some snow safety knowledge and hike up, its not just healthier and better for the environment, its also more fun(makes skiing an adventure) and better for your pocket book since last time I checked it costs $800+ per hour to operate a Bell Jetranger.
