Akubra Homburg - Acorn and Black - Hat Review (Special Thanks to Brisbane Hatters)

Here's a hat review, for a change! The Homburg by Akubra is made in Australia from pure fur felt (rabbit felt), and comes in an open crown. Here, I review the Acorn (contrast ribbon and binding) and Black colours.
This style of hat was worn by Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden, Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) in The Godfather, and King Edward VII. King Edward VII brought this style of hat back from Bad Homburg (Germany), resulting in the hat's popularity in the 1890s, through to 1930s (it began to be superseded by the fedora in popularity some time in the 1920s), until men's hats eventually fell out of favour altogether in the 1960s.
"A soft open crown Homburg, allowing the owner to impart their own "cigar" crease in the classic Homburg tradition. Features a ribbon band and bound-edge. Brim: 40-45mm wide rolled edge brim with binding."

Really enjoy the classic look of a humbug hat,,,, gives a man classic personality and an enriched style of long ago,,,, men should really go back to an arrow of dressing up that includes a hat,,,, never dress from the neck down,,,,, always from head to toe,,,,, I myself am a hat man,,,, and yes I do own four humburgs,,,, some by Stetson,,,, one by Beaver brand,,,, 1 barcelino,,,, and they all look great,,,,, enjoyed your show keep encouraging men to dress better 👍🤠💯

I normally sport Flat Caps and Newsboy Caps, but I’m looking for a good Homburg in black to match my suit, any recommendations for vintage sellers on eBay or any other good places to get dress hats?

My head size is quite big so it's been more difficult for me to find a vintage homburg, but a few of the brands that manufactured them back in the day were Adam, Champ, Knox, Borsalino, and Stetson. eBay and Etsy will have quite a few, as long as you know both your American and EU hat size. I've also had a bit of luck with Facebook Marketplace. Just make sure you're buying an actual homburg! A few sellers will call a trilby a homburg just because the brim is short; a proper homburg must have the bound and rolled/curled edge, like a bowler hat. Conversely, a lot of sellers will not know the term, 'homburg' at all, so I've been having to use the search terms 'trilby', 'fedora', 'derby', and 'bowler' to find them. Happy hunting!

Hello! Thanks for an instructive video. I just received my Homburg in the post and it feels a little high on the head, but maybe that's because I'm not used to such a tall hat (as you say, compared to modern hats). How close do you think the brim should be to the brow, and how far should the brim be from the top of the ear? Maybe I am just being too pedantic!

I think it's down to personal preference. I like my hats to be down low at the front, right down to eyebrow, just suits me better that way. Try a slight tilt side to side, almost touching ear one side and 1/2" or so off the ear the other side(13mm or so). Manipulate the crease at the front( push down lower ) to make the hat look lower if so desired.

A great homburg and one that has a shorter brim than many do. I like Acubra's carbon grey homburg. I like also that one can shape the crown. I would imagine the hat runs about $200 to order one from Acubra Hats. I assume it is a fur felt hat. So you ordered the hat, right? I like the length of the brim, which I understand is about 4.5 cm?

Yes, it is fur felt! I ordered it online, but I used Afterpay so it wasn't as painful on the pocket. I live in Australia though, the land of Akubra; so there are less additional fees than if one lived overseas. That sounds about right for the brim measurement.

Does the hat soften up a bit from wear (I kind of hope it does, a bit). I would imagine it would if one wore it in the rain.

It definitely feels softer now than when I first bought it; haven't worn it in anything more than a light drizzle though
