Historically, the initial name of Al Azhar University was (or "Jamia al-Zahra"). It was named in honor of Fatimah al-Zahra, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (May Peace be upon him and his holy family). The term "Jami'a" means "university" or "gathering place" and "al-Zahra" refers to Fatimah, which together translate to "The University of al-Zahra." Over time, the institution became widely known as Al Azhar and some sources tells afterwards the caliphate of Fatmids because the idea was to develop in the honour of daughter of beloved Prophet Muhammad (May Peace be upon him and his holy family).
